Author's note: This was written before the news of Brook Lopez breaking his foot was released.

The Nets lost yet another backbreaking loss last night, this time to the Philadelphia 76ers. The overtime loss came down on the Nets defense, a part of their game that has been a place of struggle all season long. Evan Turner capped off the game with a buzzer beater that hit several different spots on the rim before going through the net.

If you already erased that play from your mind, here it is again.

Lets dive deeper into the play, starting from the inbounds.

As one can see, Thaddeus Young lays a monster screen on Alan Anderson, freeing up Turner just as the ball gets to Spencer Hawes. This was just a great play drawn up by Brett Brown. Anderson couldn't have avoided that screen by any means.

Since Anderson is unable to keep up with Turner, Shaun Livingston leaves James Anderson to take the former Ohio State standout. However, Turner already has a full head of steam and Livingston can't slow him down. By the time Turner gets the ball, there is a little less than four seconds left-plenty of time in basketball terms.

Spencer Hawes, who got the inbounds pass from Turner, hands the ball off to Turner. Brook Lopez, knowing there isn't much time on the clock, makes the right move and slides down the court with Turner, despite what we now know: he's playing on a broken foot. The problem is that Lopez doesn't slide over enough, allowing Turner to continue to drive hard to the basket. Had Lopez put his body in front of Turner, Turner would have been trapped near the top of the key. Was he limited by his foot?

Paul Pierce made the veteran move to step in to take a charge on Turner, who was not slowing down at this point. It looked like a charge, but one can't expect to draw a charge call with less than two seconds left of the game on the road. Pierce had nothing else to do; if he would have jumped to block Turner's shot he likely would have fouled him.

The real problem is of how much time is left on the clock. Turner went from the baseline, to the top of the key, to the baseline again in about four seconds, and didn't hesitate at any point. That part comes down on the Nets defense, and their lack of it.

Of course the shot went in, and the Nets lost once again. This type of late-game failure is unacceptable for a team that has the talent to be one of the best in the Eastern Conference. Had the Nets made the extra step, put in a little bit of more effort, they would have walked out of the Wells Fargo Center with a win.

Tonight's game had "classic trap game" written all over it. Coming off a 36-point blow over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, Jason Kidd decided to rest Kevin Garnett, adding to the shorthanded-ness, with Joe Johnson not with the team due to "personal issues." Paul Pierce was back in the starting lineup for the Nets, after having come off the bench in the team's last four games, while Mirza Teletovic started at power forward in place of Garnett.

And that's the way it ended, a new low point in a season of low points, a 121-120 overtime loss on a buzzer beater by Evan Turner, a floater that hit just about every angle of the rim before finally dropping through the net as time expired.

This was the 12th different starting lineup for the Nets 26 games into the season -- they used 13 different starting lineups all of last season -- while 76ers are the worst in the NBA at guarding the three-point line. So it made sense for stretch players like Teletovic and Pierce to make their way back into the starting lineup. With Johnson out, the team reached another negative milestone: no Net has started in every game this season.

On the other side of the court, the 76ers welcomed back Michael Carter-Williams to the lineup for a Philadelphia team playing at the league's fastest pace this season. Deron Williams has been hot of late, coming off back-to-back double-doubles, and against the 76ers, he took advantage of their inability to, well, defend. He scored 10 points in the first quarter.

The major issue, once again, was rebounding. The Nets saw the 76ers crash the boards hard early, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Philadelphia showed their speed and athleticism early, getting off to a quick start with Evan Turner hot in the early goings (he made his first eight shots, scoring 16 in 13 minutes) -- they made eight of their first nine shots.

Brooklyn, however, settled down after the 76ers nearly went up by double figures, with Teletovic hitting back-to-back threes and Pierce once again dialing the clock back. This one certainly felt like it could be heading toward "trap game" territory in the first quarter, but once the Nets found their rhythm and started to defend a little things turned for Brooklyn, for the better.

Philadelphia led the Nets at halftime, though, 60-57 In the second half, the Nets found their spurt.

The defensive intensity picked up and the third quarter collapse was no collapse at all. It was actually a net positive. The fourth quarter sped up a bit too much for the Nets. The pace turned the game sloppy. And the Nets continued to fail at rebounding the basketball. Just an awful job of crashing the boards and limiting the points in the paint - and on transition.

Brooklyn had some nice stretch moments, with threes from Pierce, Anderson and, um, Brook Lopez. How about that? But the 76ers weren't going away they carried a one-point lead with one minute remaining in the game. Anderson went to the line then to give te Nets a lead, followed by a back and forth with the game tied with the shot clock off.

The Nets had the ball, tied with 5 seconds to go. Deron Williams missed a jumper. And, overtime. From there, the Nets just couldn't get the stops. Even as they pulled close, the 76ers seemed to always find a way to respond. Namely, off the glass.

That was, until Paul Pierce hit a super clutch three, giving the Nets the lead with 15 seconds to go. Evan Turner happened. Evan Turner. He hit a drive in the lane as time expired, giving the 76ers a 121-120 overtime win.

Terrible defense by the Nets in this one.

Brooklyn was out-rebounded in this one, again, which Pierce took note of.

"It’s just inexcusable right now, one of biggest teams in the league getting crushed on the glass every night," said Pierce in what could be construed as a dig at the Nets bigs. Lopez, Andray Blatche and Mason Plumlee finished with a total of 10 boards, or as many as Pierce.

That needs to improve. They were, however, better at defending the three. But if they can't rebound, they can't expect to win many close-out games.

Joe Johnson, who missed practice due to personal reasons, is a game-time decision for tonight's game against the 76ers. Kevin Garnett will sit this one out due to rest.

Monday, against the Sixers, Johnson exploded for 37 points, 29 of them scored in the third quarter. He was a game-time decision for that game as well with a cold. Jason Kidd didn't announce who would start for Johnson, but it seems that Paul Pierce may get the nod. Kidd said that it is a "possibility that (Pierce) probably does start" with Johnson out tonight.

For Garnett, it is up in the air who starts, but Mirza Teletovic and Andray Blatche are the two likely candidates. Teletovic started at power forward for the Nets Monday night in the teams victory over Philly.

Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry will also be out of this game, but both were working out at the team's practice facility yesterday. Rod Boone of Newsday believes that Terry might be out for even more time, noting that it has been a slow rehab process for him.

Two steps forward, one step back. Just when you think the Brooklyn Nets are about to go on a sustained winning streak, they come up short. The Nets came within one point late in the fourth quarter, but couldn't go over the top and ended up losing to the Wizards at home on Wednesday night. On the injury front, it looks like Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry are on the comeback trail and might (just might!) be back soon.

It's been a really bad week for the Sixers. Really, really bad. Last Saturday, they allowed Portland to connect on a franchise record 21 (21!!!) three pointers en route to a 34 point #beatemdown. On Monday, Brooklyn hit a franchise record 21 three pointers (Joe Johnson was responsible for ten of them) and once again, Philadelphia was on the receiving end of a #beatemdown, this time by 36 points. It's officially trading season and with the rumor that disgruntled Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters wants to join Philadelphia, that Sixer roster might be headed for an overhaul pretty soon.

One thing that's been consistent for the Nets has been their poor three point defense. Against Washington, they allowed the Wizards to drain twelve from behind the arc. One thing that has been true for the Sixers is their penchant for three pointers. They're eleventh in three pointers a game, but 26th in efficiency. As for Brooklyn, they have the worst three point defense in the Association, allowing teams to shoot 40.6 percent from deep.

In Monday's game, the Nets punished the Sixers on the inside. They connected on 19 of their 31 attempts from inside 16 feet. Daniel Orton will be back for Philadelphia after missing a game due to his dust up with Portland's Meyers Leonard. On the other hand, Brook Lopez will be here for this matchup. Lopez has excelled on the inside this season and outside of Spencer Hawes and Orton, Philadelphia doesn't have the size to match up well against Lopez or Andray Blatche.

Michael Carter-Williams is expected to make his return. The rookie guard has been out due to a knee infection for the past couple of weeks and the Sixers have struggled even more than usual. He's missed the last seven games, and the Sixers have lost all seven. If he does play, he'll have a really difficult challenge on his hands in the form of Deron Williams. Williams is coming off his first poor shooting game since coming back, but did collect 13 assists. The Sixers allow 28 attempts a game inside the restricted area, so look for Williams to drive at will.

Player to watch: Thaddeus Young

Of the players expected to be traded by the deadline, Young is the best of Philadelphia's trade chips. In a story first broken by our colleagues at Liberty Ballers, Young requested a trade. He does most of his damage on the inside cleaning up on the offensive glass. He has the ability to hi jumpers, but hasn't been able to hit them on a consistent basis throughout his career (only 40 percent from the midrange once in his career). If you remember back to Doug Collins' tenure, they relied on a lot of deep jumpers. With the management change, so too did the over reliance on jumpers. As it relates to Young, it's had a bit of a negative effect. About 14 percent of his field goal attempts have come from three point range, the highest amount since 2009. He's converted on 35 percent of them, which is right around league average. The drawback to this change is that his offensive rebounding and free throw rates are down. What's the best description of Young? Big boss at Liberty Ballers Michael Levin has a good one:

He's great off the ball in the open court, but watching him handle the ball gives you the same feeling you get immediately after a roller-coaster: your knees are kind of buckling and in hindsight, that wasn't as safe as you expected. If the Sixers will keep up this kind of pace when they become more "team" and less "abstract fingerpainting," Hinkie may want a 4 who can create for himself a bit more.

In this game, look for him to have a big game on the glass. Kevin Garnett is the best rebounder in the rotation, but his poor overall play has limited him to around 22 minutes a game. Provided that this game is close (& with the way Monday's game, it's not guaranteed that it will be), his work on the offensive glass should give Philadelphia a chance to win.
