Both teams were depleted, but the Nets got some big performances from Johnson and Blatche and key contributions from Teletovic and Lopez to gain the victory.

The Nets survived a furious 4th quarter run by the shorthanded Grizzlies - and moved to within two games of the 8th seeded Celtics - by recording just their 5th victory of the season in Memphis tonight.

As usual, the Nets were shorthanded themselves in this one, with the ailing Paul Pierce sitting out and Deron Williams, Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry seemingly nowhere near ready to get back to game action.

Brook Lopez was the obvious choice to pick up the slack, but he looked rusty early against the depleted Memphis frontcourt (Zach Randolph was a late scratch with an ingrown toenail, joining Marc Gasol on the sidelines.) Instead it was Joe Johnson who jumpstarted the Nets' offense - with a 16 point 1st quarter barrage on his way to a team high 26.

Andray Blatche then proceeded to fill up the score sheet (21 points, 8 rebounds, 7-10 shooting, 3-3 from three) and helped the Nets build a healthy 15 point 3rd quarter lead. Jason Kidd had high praise for Blatche's defense as well. In a quote never heard in Washington, Kidd said, "Dray was totally into the game ... When he's talking out there, he's like KG, a guy other guys can feed off of."

However, the Grizz, led by backup G Quincy Pondexter (22 points, 8-12 shooting, 3-5 from three) cut that lead down to one early in the 4th. Would panic set in? Would the league's worst defensive team play true to form and drop yet another game on the road?

The answer game in the form of some huge shots of the fingertips of Mirza Teletovic - righting the ship and giving the Nets some breathing room.

And from there, Lopez took over, pouring in 13 of his 20 points in the 4th and burying the Grizzlies for good.

Quick Notes

- The banged-up Nets needed a starter, so Kidd tabbed Tyshawn Taylor to make his first NBA start. He wasn't much of a factor (2-5, 6 points, 0 assists, 3 TO), but it speaks to the work he's putting in that he got the nod.

- Blatche drained a career-high 3 three-pointers - matching his total from last season. He also took on a lot of the ball-handling duties in the absence of a true PG in the Nets' lineup. This guy is not your average backup center.

- Reggie Evans was a healthy scratch.

Tyshawn Taylor had his first double-double on Friday night vs. the Rockets. Now, he will get his first start vs. the Grizzlies.

Jason Kidd told reporters in Memphis that he wanted to give Taylor a chance not just because of his improved play but also because Shaun Livingston needs a rest.

Livingston has averaged only 3.0 points in the last five games, and against the Rockets failed to score. In those five games, he shot only 5of-22, and missed his first three point shot in two years. In those same five games, Taylor has averaged 9.2 points and shot 17-of-41 including 2-of-10 from deep. Taylor has handed out 19 assists to Livingston's 17.

Kidd also confirmed that Paul Pierce will not play, out with a bruised right (shooting) hand.

Dennis Velasco, who is shaking his head in frustration after last night's blowout to the Houston Rockets, gathers himself to ask Chris Faukner of Grizzly Bear Blues several questions about the Memphis Grizzlies and what the Nets could expect to see tonight.

1) So, we may not even need to go further than this because this might be summed up in one sentence - The Brooklyn Nets stink right now, so the Memphis Grizzlies should win. However, since that's just too short and boring (because it's a well-known and universally-accepted fact), we keep going. So, first question, how happy are you with the Grizz's first-year head coach in David Joerger? He was actually the guy I wanted for the Nets because I dig numbers, but alas, the Nets went with the Kidd, whom, for the record, I still have faith in. Extremely blind faith, sure, but faith nonetheless.

If the Grizzlies record more closely resembled that of the Nets, I'd probably be describing my sentiments towards Dave Joerger as "blind faith" as well. I was a big fan of the hire, but me and a lot of other Memphians are still in a "wait and see" mode with the new coach. The Joergermeister obviously embraces analytics more than his predecessor, so we immediately have a better coach-to-front-office relationship, which is absolutely huge for a small market team. Joerger has also shown the ability to adapt his approach based on guidance and input from his core players. Really, the only criticism I can definitely give him right now is the fact that he can sometimes "forgot who he's playing" and leave in weak lineups that allows leads to dwindle or get built upon the Grizzlies.

2) I've always been a fan of Mike Conley, Jr. and this season, he seems like he's raising his game up a bit this season. What do you account for his improvement, particularly in scoring. Is it Joerger's system? The lack of Rudy Gay, the need for points with Marc Gasol out?

Mike Conley has turned into one of my favorite NBA players in the past couple of seasons. He is an ambidextrous point guard with Olympic Gold Medal DNA who has become a fitness/training geek more and more in each of his NBA seasons. Mike has always had a lot of the physical skills (and has bulked up his frame in recent seasons), but I believe it's the development on his mental game that's really turned things on for him. The Rudy Gay trade did a couple of things for him: A) it publicly and vocally announced that the Griz FO 100% endorses Mike Conley and Marc Gasol as their "franchise combo." They want to build around these two guys, and that vote of confidence immediately paid off last year as Conley became more aggressive on offense. As someone who has used sports psychology for much of his career, building the basketball ego of Conley has been a 5-6 year process that is just now culminating in the prime of his career. Now the Grizzlies can combine that investment with a head coaching relationship that allows for Conley to assume a leadership role, even with his calm, soft-spoken demeanor.

3) Speaking of Gasol, who is out indefinitely, how is the team dynamic changed with his sprained MCL sidelining him? Who needs to step up in his place? Could it be one of my favorite under-utilized players in Ed Davis? GO HEELS!

The Gasol injury was scary. Word coming out yesterday has it that Marc could return much sooner than anticipated (3-4 weeks rather than 8-10 weeks or indefinitely), so Memphis won't have to drastically change things to survive the entire season. But you've hit the nail on the head - it's time for Ed Davis get in the game and step up his performances. We've only seen a couple of games without Gasol, but the absence is oh-so-very-palpable. Thank all that is good that the Grizzlies traded for Kosta Koufos in the offseason, who will be able to play heavy minutes and take on part of the post-presence that Gasol anchored so well, but we're not going to see Koufos dishing out dimes in the high post like Marc. We'll most likely see a few different combos of replacing "Gasol by committee" with Koufos, Ed Davis and Jon Leuer. Davis has been ballyhooed since his acquisition in the Rudy trade, but Griz fans haven't really gotten to see the version of Ed that was thriving in Toronto. I think good things are on the horizon for Davis, though. In the last three games without Gasol, Ed is getting very solid production, shooting over 60% from the field and --- wait for it --- shot 5/6 from the free throw line against Boston on Wednesday!

4) I've read that Joerger is getting aggressive suggestions from ownership and the front office in regards to the line-up and how to play, which is to basically go against their Grit N' Grind persona. What are your feelings on this? Could it be true? If so, how must this be affecting the locker room and is Joerger already on the hot seat?

Joerger (whether under his own direction or from suggestions from the FO) made it known that he wanted to "play faster" this season. What we saw was an increased PACE factor over the first 6-8 games that left the Grizzlies confused, hesitant and extremely turnover-prone. Since their 3-5 start, we've seen the Grizzlies move back closer to their Grit n Grind approach, while gradually incorporating some faster movement in offensive sets and definitely emphasizing a push in transition. This change was apparently brought about by Mike Conley directly going to Joerger and discussing the reimplementation of the old sets. Even though the results have been mixed, Joerger is definitely more flexible than Lionel Hollins was, in terms of adapting to the feedback from his players. The biggest challenge for Joerger and the locker room will be maintaining the ferocity and passion that Hollins founded over his tenure with the Grizzlies. I believe that this team is now mature enough to self-motivate and keep each other focused without a task-mastering-spiritual-leader for a head coach.

5) What are a few other things that Nets fans should know about the Grizzlies... and give me a final score!

A few things that have developed this year: Zach Randolph is in some of the best shape of his career and can still be a 20/10 machine. Tony Allen is playing some of the best offensive ball of his career - averaging over 10 pts a game on 55% shooting with a PER of nearly 20 - all while averaging career highs in steals and assists per game. The body-formerly-known as Tayshaun Prince might have been resurrected. After Prince spent the preseason and start of the regular season recovering from an intense stomach virus that saw his already-gaunt frame shed another 30 lbs, he's found some new confidence in his role with the Grizzlies and has been much more aggressive in the past couple of weeks. Jerryd Bayless will most likely either shoot 1/8 or 8/10 from the field - there has been no in-between this season. The Grizzlies will need a lot of bench scoring to make it through the Gasol-less stretch of the season, so the rotations could play a huge role in the game tonight. If Brook Lopez is out, I think the Grizzlies pound the paint and wear down the Nets early - Prediction: Memphis 102 Brooklyn 91.

DV's Prediction: Brooklyn Nets 97, Memphis Grizzlies 103.

What do you all think the score will be? Is there any hope for the Nets to get this turned around tonight? Let us know below in the comments!

Pierce has been struggling as of late, averaging 11 points, three assists, and three rebounds on 30% shooting over the last five games.

Brook Lopez was not on the injury report, so it seems that he will play after returning to the lineup last night. He scored 16 points in 21 minutes against the Rockets. Deron Williams, Jason Terry, and Andrei Kirilenko did not make the trip with the Nets. If Pierce doesn't play, it will be his second missed game and will put the Nets on a pace to lose 168 games to injuries or illness, a little less than last year's "superteam", the Lakers, missed.

For the Grizzlies, only Marc Gasol is listed as inactive. He is recovering from an MCL sprain.

In the last two games, vs. the Lakers and Rockets, teams took advantage of the Nets lack of an athletic defense to rain three's. It seems opponent coaches know the Nets can't close quickly enough and one three point shooter after enough gets left wide open. Wednesday night, it was Jordan Farmar leading the way, Friday night, it was Chandler Parsons. Jason Kidd says the schedule, four games in five nights, has led to fatigue, which in turn has led to other issues. He should be so lucky. It's been a problem all year long. The Nets are currently last in perimeter defense in the NBA, letting opponents hit 40.1 percent.

The opponent this Thanksgiving weekend, closing out the brutal five night stretch, will be the Memphis Grizzlies. LIke the Nets, they have disappointed, but not at the same level. They are 8-7, which in the West doesn't get you a playoff spot extrapolated out over the season. They're also hurting with Marc Gasol, last year's DPOY out for a while. Memphis is unlikely to match the three-point exploits of Los Angeles or Houston, being one of the league's worst three point shooting teams, but they can muscle inside. That's not exactly a Nets defensive strength either.

One saving grace: the Grizzlies have played poorly at home lately, averaging only 86.3 points per game in their last three at FedEx Forum, all losses. The Grizzlies will be trying to avoid losing four straight at home for the first time in almost four years Saturday night.

Brook Lopez is expected back. He's likely to face Kosta Koufos and Memphis' center-by-committee. Kevin Garnett, rested during the Houston debacle, will also be available to watch Zach Randolph. Deron Williams, Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry aren't with the team. D-Will will be re-evaluated on Monday, but the other two will miss at least another week. Kirilenko will have missed 14 games by then, as many as he missed all season.

Otherwise, the starters should be a bit more rested, four of them having been pulled by Kidd after the first half. Shaun Livingston; Joe Johnson; Paul Pierce and Andray Blatche all sat. Combined, they shot 3-of-23 in the first half before Kidd pulled them.

Thus far, the season's only saving grace has been the development of the team's younger and athletic subs. Mirza Teletovic, given an opportunity the last two games, has averaged 17.5 points, 9.0 rebounds while shooting 10-of-22 overall and a scintillating 7-of-13 from deep. Tyshawn Taylor has also played well and better than Livingston. Against the Rockets, in case you physically couldn't read the boxscore, Taylor had his first NBA double-double with 16 points and 12 assists. While playing much more steadily than he has in the past, he hasn't shot well in his last five games, games where he's seen big minutes. Overall, he's shooting 41.4 percent and only 20 percent from deep. Mason Plumlee continues to surprise, scoring 16 points vs. the Rockets. He's shot 14-of-17 in the last four.

Memphis is likely to start Koufos at center, Randolph at power forward, Tyshawn Prince at small forward and Mike Conley Jr. and Tony Allen at the guards, with Ed Davis sharing minutes in the post later in the game. Jerryd Bayless comes off the bench. One thing to look for: the athleticism of the Grizzlies backcourt could be a big problem for the Nets.

Memphis does have coaching issues as well. There were reports earlier in the week that everyone is giving rookie coach Dave Joerger advice, from owner Robert Pera, a 30-something software tycoon, to John Hollinger, the former ESPN stats maven now the Grizzlies vice-president for basketball operations.

Player to Watch: Zach Randolph

Randolph has always been a Nets nemesis. A big tough guy with a soft touch, he's averaging a very typical 16 points and nearly 10 rebounds, shooting 49 percent overall. He has not, however, picked up the scoring load since Gasol has gone down. Memphis realizes that and wants to involve him more.

As STATS points out... "Getting Randolph more involved could prove key for Memphis, which is 7-2 when he scores at least 15. The veteran forward is averaging 13.6 points at home compared to 18.1 on the road."

For the Nets to have a chance to win, they will have to contain Randolph as well as the Grizzlies speedy backcourt.

Head on back to the November 1995 for the Grizzlies first game as the Vancouver Grizzlies. Benoit Benjamin, the former Net, led the Grizz to a 92-80 win over the Trail Blazers. Byron Scott had 14.
