Kidd purportedly asked Tyshawn Taylor, "hit me" during the last few seconds of the Lakers game. Taylor then put a shoulder into Kidd's chest, causing him to spill a drink on the floor, leading to an official timeout to clean up the resulting mess. The incident took place between foul shots by Jodie Meeks with 8.3 seconds left and the Nets down by 2. The Nets were out of timeouts and the delay also served to "ice" (literally?) Meeks. Meeks made the shot and the play designed during the official timeout led to a Paul Pierce open look on a three that missed and the Lakers won.

The whole incident was all caught on camera.

In the post-game press conference, Kidd made light of the incident while denying it.

"The cup slipped out of my hand," Kidd said. "I was getting tired. Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball. So, in the heat of the battle, you’re trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the Coke fell out of my hand."

The fine will be the second penalty levied against Kidd by the league enforcement office. In October, he was suspended the first two games of the season after pleading guilty to a DUI. Ironically, the fine will be levied Kidd's former GM and golfing buddy, Rod Thorn, who heads the NBA's enforcement office.

With the Lakers coming to town last night, similarities between this year's Nets and last year's Lakers team immediately came to mind.

Brooklyn, like Los Angeles a year before, made the move of the off-season, trading for veterans and high-level talent to immediately become a title contender ... they thought. The basketball world has seen one fail, and it looks like the other could fail as well.

One similarity both teams had and now have are aging players and bad luck when it comes to health. The Lakers had to deal with injuries to Dwight Howard, who was recovering from back surgery through the offseason, and a torn shoulder labrum during the season, and Steve Nash, who had leg and hip injuries throughout the year. Laker players ultimately missed 176 games to injury. The Nets are on a pace to match or surpass that.

The Nets have a laundry list of injuries. Friday will make it two weeks since Brook Lopez has played, while Deron Williams has only played once since that date, both dealing with ankle injuries. Andrei Kirilenko, thought to be the steal of this summer's free agency has played in just four games due to his recurring back spasms.

Injuries aren't the only thing that make these two similar; defensive woes are part of the problem. The Nets are currently last in defensive rating, allowing 109.1 points per 100 possessions. The Lakers, by season's end, were ranked 22nd in the league, having a mark of 106.6 points per 100 possessions. Last season, the Lakers ranked 29th in steals. Currently, the Nets rank 24th overall. Although, if one were to average the Nets current forced turnover number over an 82-game season, they will finish with a little bit more than 100 more forced turnovers. That's not a particularly huge difference.

The eerie comparisons get worse. The Lakers started 1-4 last season and couldn't put up with Mike Brown, firing him. General Manager Mitch Kupchak said, "We're not looking five or 10 years down the road. This team was built to contend this year." That's weird, Billy King mentioned the same thing in October when he said, "Now, this is the window (to win a championship) -- this season."

The Lakers had chemistry issues that were well-documented and far more extreme than the Nets have experienced. Kobe Bryant needed the ball in his hands at all times, but which left franchise center Dwight Howard as the odd man out. Pau Gasol had trouble meshing with Howard and was relegated to the bench for a portion of the season.

Brooklyn hasn't looked good early on, dealing with what would seem to be early on-the-court issues with trying to get everyone comfortable in the offense. Their biggest fears may be coming to fruition with the decline of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Deron Williams balky ankles have flared up once again, which has made his minutes, when healthy, regress. They've had trouble spacing the floor and getting back on defense. And, of course, the third quarter woes.

The Nets have been embarrassed a few times this season. Whether it be their losses to the Kings or Bobcats, or Jason Kidd's head coaching becoming a story itself, after playing for the Knicks less than a year ago. Last night may have hit a new low, though.

So what ultimately happened in the end of the 2012-13? The Lakers became a better story than basketball team. They never really were a threat to the elite of the Western Conference, and the fear of the following off-season loomed over the whole season. And that's something Nets' fans absolutely don't want to happen to this 2013-14 Brooklyn team.

How does the Nets' story end? No one knows yet, but the early reports are abysmal. They have been beaten by teams that shouldn't be on the same floor as the talent the Nets have. "It's a process," Jason Kidd has said constantly through nearly a month of basketball, but when does the process end and it becomes real? As King said, the Nets window is this year. Injuries, chemistry, and the decline of their core players have placed the Nets at 4-11, flirting with last place in the East. The 2012-13 Lakers? Well, they were 7-8 at the 15-game mark.

Luckily for the Nets, they are in arguably the worst conference in NBA history. Their Western Conference counterparts have 11 teams at .500 or better; the East has just two above the mediocre mark. Furthermore, the Nets are in the worst division in basketball, one that has the Raptors in the lead with a record of 6-8. It's amazing to think, despite being embarrassingly poor through 15 percent of the season, the Nets are in striking distance of a top four spot in the East.

Facts are fact, though. And the Nets are on pace to not only become the Lakers of last year, but even worse. Thankfully, the season is a long one, and there is still plenty of time for the Nets to turn this around. Because as we saw wit the 2012-13 Lakers, headlines aren't exactly what fans are looking for. They don't carry the same weight and satisfy fans as, say, championship rings do.

BROOKLYN - Toward the end of the Nets 99-94 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Nets were down by one point with just over eight seconds to go. They had no timeouts left. So, what happened next? A delay of game because coach Jason Kidd had spilled a cup of "diet soda" with ice in it on the court.

This caused a stoppage in play, allowing for Kidd to huddle up with his players as they dried up the court. This also allowed for the team to "ice" Jodie Meeks, who had hit his first free-throw.

Devin Kharpertian asked Kidd after the game about the incident, and Kidd said the "cup slipped out of my hand as I was getting (Tyshawn) substituted." He went on, "Sweaty palms, I was never good with the ball."

Mike King, however, had video that showed another story:

Ummm... RT @MikeKing00: Kidd said "hit me" to Tyshawn to spill the drink.

Tyshawn was asked after the game and he said he wasn't paying attention when he bumped into Kidd, saying it was an "accident."

"I was coming out and he was in my way," Taylor said, adding, "I was like, 'Coach, get outta my way, bro!'"

Adding to the craziness (if such was possible), two Lakers infiltrated the Nets' huddle during the official timeout, watching as John Welch, the assistant coach, drew up a play! @MikeKing00, the same NetsDaily poster who first noticed the "hit me" sequence, picked up and tweeted out that one too! He will now be know as Eagle Eye Mike.

BROOKLYN - Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Andrei Kirilenko lead the list of players not active in this one, but as Lakers' head coach said before the game, both teams are "fighting for their lives."

Brooklyn was coming off what turned out to be a hard-fought game in Toronto the night prior, picking up just their fourth win in 14 games and their first victory in five games. Both teams entered this one injured and struggling, but the Nets were hoping their momentum from their win the night before would carry over.

It was the Lakers, though, who came out hot, hitting their first four of their first five shots, three of which were from beyond the arc. Two minutes into the game the Lakers had an 11-2 lead, timeout Brooklyn.

The timeout didn't help, much, as the Nets looked more and more frustrated as they were out-worked by the Lakers. Joe Johnson once again had the hot hand early, scoring nine straight points for the Nets and keeping them in this one. Defensively, though, Brooklyn couldn't get stops. Pau Gasol and the Lakers answered on every Nets make.

Los Angeles took a 34-18 lead into the second quarter. The Nets had a lot of work to do to get back into this one.

Well, Jordan Farmar came out firing, making sure the Nets weren't going to work their way back into this one, hitting back-to-back threes and giving the Lakers a 25-point lead two minutes into the second quarter. Alan Anderson did his best to shoot the Nets back into this one, but they still had a long way to go before it even become a respectable, let along winnable game.

A quick 15-0 run in the middle of the second quarter helped to cut the lead to 12, 48-36, but the two teams essentially traded buckets from there, but the Lakers taking a 54-40 lead into the half.

Nets cut the lead early in the third to nine points, after a Mason Plumlee dunk, giving them some daylight, but the Lakers responded with four straight. Timeout, Brooklyn.

Nets responded out of the timeout, with some nice energy from Tyshawn Taylor and a few young man's possessions out of Paul Pierce. They were able to get as close as seven points at about the midway mark in the quarter. Baby steps.

On a scary note, as the Nets were trying to fight back, Andray Blatche rolled his ankle and limped off the court. Just what the Nets didn't need, another injured player. Kidd called a timeout, as Blatche limped off the court after a made and-one. Blatche returned to the game.

The bench brought some nice energy in the third quarter and, believe it or not, the Nets won their second consecutive third quarter, this time 28-23. They trailed, though, heading into the fourth, 77-68.

Mirza Teletovic opens the fourth by hitting a three and cutting the lead to six points. The lineup of Tyshawn Taylor, Alan Anderson, Paul Pierce, Mirza Teletovic and Mason Plumlee started the fourth and was playing like the Nets' only hope to pull this one off.

Imagine that.

The game went back and forth for most of the fourth quarter. Each time the Lakers tried to make a run, the Nets would respond. Teletovic, Pierce, Anderson, Plumlee and, this time, Joe Johnson, again, were carrying this team. Teletovic hits two free throws at the 7-minute mark, followed by two free throws from Plumlee to pull the Nets to within two points.

Kidd kept Mirza and Anderson in the game, bringing in Kevin Garnett to give Plumlee some well-deserved rest. And after Mirza nailed a three, made a block and then hit a free-throw, the Nets, once down by 27 points, were tied with the Lakers, 92-92, with 3:45 to play.

Paul Pierce had a turnover at the halfcourt line with under a 1:30 to play that led to a wide-open dunk from Johnson, putting the Lakers up two.

From there, the Nets went on a 3-plus minute scoreless streak, and couldn't get over the hump after climbing all the way back from down 27 points. Good effort, but too little, too late. They fell to the Lakers, after putting up a late fight, 99-94.

Mirza scored a season-high 17 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes, while Anderson went for 14 points and Plumlee finished with six points and four rebounds in 21 minutes.
