David Aldridge of NBA.com and TNT writes this week about the analytic bonanza that the league's embrace of the SportsVu system will bring all 30 NBA teams, focusing on what it showed about the Nets-Pacers game Saturday..

NBA installed six small military cameras in the rafters above Barclays Center this summer, bringing the Nets into the world of SportsVu, the next generation of sports analytics where every movement is tracked. The Nets are among the last 15 NBA teams to get the technology. Before this season, half of the 30 teams had installed the cameras at their own expense, about $100,000. The league will pick up the tab for the rest.

As Aldridge explains, the cameras, operating 25 frames per second, can determine, "how fast is a player running on the basketball court, and for how long? How much does he dribble? How long does his team maintain possession of the ball? How often does he touch or control a rebound within five feet of him?"

The data is analyzed with the help of "spotters" and team analytic staff, some of it in near real time, some the next day.

Here's the take on what the cameras saw Saturday night vs. Indiana, Aldridge writes...

Roy Hibbert had 11 rebounds on 18 rebound chances, or 61 percent. Brook Lopez had seven rebounds on 15 rebound chances, or 47 percent.

Even though the Pacers have one of the league's best halfcourt defenses, both Indiana and Brooklyn were able to drive effectively. The Nets scored 27 points on 19 drives, a points per possession on drives (PPD) of 1.42, above the league average of 1.2. The Pacers were also effective, scoring 25 points on 20 drives (1.32 PPD).

The Pacers were better on uncontested jump shots, making half of their 36 shots. The Nets went 10-for-26, just 39 percent, on their uncontested shots. That isn't good for Brooklyn, because the Nets shoot the second-highest number of contested shots in the league -- 20.5 per game -- and they only make 34.1 percent of them.

By contrast, Indiana only shoots 11.9 contested shots per game, 22nd overall. And it's probably no surprise that with a lethal perimeter player like Paul George on the roster, the Pacers are second in the league in catch-and-shoot jumpers, making 48.5 percent of them.

How and how much teams will use depends on the coach and organization. The Nets upgraded their analytics guy, Scott Sereday, this off-season and added Charles Klask, Lawrence Frank's assistant for analytics in Detroit.

Aldridge also writes about the Nets struggles calling them "decidedly average in everything," but writes as well about the team's veteran experience and early lack of health, particularly Deron Williams' lost preseason and Andrei Kirilenko's back spasms.

The Pacers know what the Nets are going through. They went through it last year. They started 2-4 and didn't get two games above .500 until December 15, when they got to 13-11. (Last year's Celtics started 3-3, with losses to Milwaukee and Philadelphia.)

"That team is a lot better than [its record]. Even the games they lost they’re competing at a really high level. … They play with playoff intensity," Pacers coach Frank Vogel told Fred Kerber.

"They’re a good team. It’s early. It’s going to take a while for them to adjust," Roy Hibbert said. "When we come back [to Brooklyn], it’s going to be a tough environment. They’re a tough contender right there. I don’t see them having to continue the slow start."

Lance Stephenson agreed, telling our Dexter Henry, "They got a lot of pieces and a great bench. They're pretty good. But I'm just happy we got the win."

Kerber writes, "Funny, when a Pacer says it takes time, it sounds like an explanation. When a Net talks time, it sounds like an excuse. Bottom line, it’s reality."

Lance Stephenson loves his Pacers, but as he tells Dexter Henry, the Nets are the realization of a dream for a Brooklyn baller.

"When I was young, I always dreamed for an NBA team to be in Brooklyn and now it's really happening," said Stephenson who broke the New York State high school scoring record at Lincoln on Coney Island. Indeed, when first word of the Nets moving broke, Stephenson was 13.

But Stephenson wouldn't go along when Dex asked if he would like to play for his hometown team.

"Aw you can't ask me that question," said a smiling Stephenson. "The future holds itself but I love my team, I love the Pacers. I would love to stay with my team. I'm happy with my team."

The Nets did indeed look at the 6'5" swingman after his freshman year at Cincinnati, but a history of off-court issues soured Nets scouts who feared those issues would be worsened if he stayed close to home.

Stephenson had praise for Isiah Whitehead, Lincoln's latest star, and for his choice of Seton Hall.

"He picked a great school. I think he'll do great there. He's the next one coming up. He's got that mentality, that aggressiveness that toughness that CI (Coney Island) players have," Stephenson told Dex, who covers a lot of high school ball in Brooklyn.

Paul Pierce talks about the urgency and desire to win, while Joe Johnson speaks to the team still getting to know each other, noting Deron Williams' injury during the preseason. Kevin Garnett thinks the Nets need to work on their timing.

The ball slammed the back of the rim, went straight up six feet, dribbled three times on the right side, careened to the left side, then nestled sweetly into the twine.

The basket had been unkind to the Nets to that point, shooting just 44% against the NBA's best defensive team and seeing several jumpers go in and out - but that shot off the fingertips of Paul Pierce woke up a previously moribund Barclays Center crowd and set up a frenetic final four minutes between two of the East's strongest teams.

On the next possession Brook Lopez (16 points, 7 rebounds) got hammered by Roy Hibbert (15 points, 11 rebounds) on a scoring drive to the hoop that cut the Pacers lead to three, but no foul was called.

Indiana extended back to a seven point edge behind game-leading scorer Paul George (24 points), but Lopez and Deron Williams (17 points, 10 assists) again pulled the Nets back to a one possession deficit.

After some defensive stops by both squads, Coach Jason Kidd removed Lopez for Jason Terry (0-4 shooting), and called a play for the man who has made a habit of sinking huge late-game shots - Joe Johnson (17 points, 3-5 from three). Williams found Johnson for a great look behind the arc (thanks to a terrific Terry screen) with 11 seconds to go, but his shot was an inch too deep, launching off the inside of the back rim. Brooklyn's small lineup couldn't beat David West (18 points, 8 rebounds) to the loose ball, and the Pacers were able to salt the game away.

This was the second half of a back-to-back for both teams and both coaches spread the minutes around to keep the starters fresh for the stretch run. Kidd played all ten Nets who saw action over 15:00 and nobody reached 33. Eighteen different players scored in the game and eight reached double-digits.

Their first home loss of the season sent the Nets to a disappointing 2-4 and put them in an early hole at the bottom of the Eastern Conference - 4.5 games behind the 7-0 Pacers. They now head West to try to make up ground against the Kings, Suns and Clippers. Five of the Nets' next six games are on the road, where they are 0-3 so far this season.

The Nets game notes say that Shaun Livingston is a game time decision for the team's game against the Pacers tonight with a sprained left ankle. Livingston has been a huge boost off the bench for Brooklyn this season, averaging 6.8 points per game and 3 assists while shooting 56% from the floor in 20 minutes per game. He has also taken some weight off of Deron Williams, who has been a little slow to get back to full speed following his ankle injury.

Livingston said that he will have no issues, and he just "tweaked it last night."

Livingston is the only one on the injury report, but Andrei Kirilenko has been ruled out as he deals with his back spasms. Toko Sheneglia has been called back up to the Nets after spending the past several days with the Armor.

Kirilenko is the only Net ruled out, so it looks as if Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will play. Jason Kidd was adamant on sitting KG in back-to-back games this season, this of course being the Nets second game in as many nights.

For the Pacers, Danny Granger is the only one on their injury report, he is still suffering from a strained left calf. George Hill, who returned last night against the Raptors, is expected to start.
