Josh Smith likes idea of Brooklyn, but it's not happening

Unless there's some secret route no one is aware of, Josh Smith won't be headed to Brooklyn anytime soon. That train left the station at the trade deadline when the Hawks deemed the Nets offer of Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and a pick (or the rights to Bojan Bogdanovic) unworthy and kept the 6'9" power forward in Atlanta.

That aside, Smith likes the embrace hes seen his former teammate receive in Brooklyn and thinks the Nets are a viable option for free agents if and when the Nets get out from under the luxury tax.

"That’s what he was to us – a guy that we can give the ball to in the late seconds and he would deliver," Smith told Stefan Bondy. "He’s on a bigger stage now because it’s Brooklyn, it’s a bigger market. So it’s more magnified than what it was here. But he always had that in his game. It’s good to see him successful this season."

He, like other free agents, has noticed what Mikhail Prokhorov --and Barclays Center-- has meant to the franchise now that they're out of New Jersey and in Brooklyn. But not for him.

"That’s a pretty good team," Smith said about Brooklyn. "They have a lot of talent. The organization has definitely been turned around by the owner they have. They’re a good team. We’re a good team too. Who knows what would have happened, but it didn’t happen. I’m here. So I just have to focus on what I can do in order for us to keep succeeding and keep getting better."

How'd that post-Deron Williams record-breaking hangover work out for the Nets against the Hawks, you ask?

No bad, not bad at all. After brushing off an early struggle on the offensive side of the ball -- and a Johan Petro run! -- the Nets quickly got themselves into a comfortable rhythm and built/carried a double-digit lead from early in the second quarter until the end of the game, resulting in a 93-80 win.

Key stat: Nets with 20 assists and just nine turnovers.

Yes, it was Petro who led the Hawks early, scoring six of the team's first nine points. The Nets, on the other hand, didn't make a field goal until about four minutes into the game. While Williams, the star of Friday night's game, didn't score a single point until just over eight minutes into the game. He did get hot late in the quarter, scoring seven points and hitting one three -- I know, only one.

The Nets did get a little lucky early with Al Horford picking up two fouls in the first six minutes, but when you consider Petro was playing Horford-esque, scoring 10 points (a season high) in the first, helping the Hawks tie the game up at 23-23 after one, you can say the Hawks were a bit lucky themselves.

In the second quarter, the Nets' defense really stepped up, limiting the Hawks to 14 points. And had they themselves been able to take care of the ball (7 turnovers), they might have had a bigger lead than 51-37. Still, they shot 50 percent in the half and went from being down 11 to up by 14. They battled, for sure.

Enter, the third quarter, where the Nets have had their issues this season, and tonight had an opportunity to really put the Hawks away early.

While the Hawks made a run, closing to within 11, the Nets responded by going to Brook Lopez in the paint and watching as he worked Petro in the paint. And when the Hawks countered by putting Ivan Johnson on him, he continued to put on a show, scoring 14 points in the quarter, helping the Nets to a 19-point lead.

After three, they led 76-57. Game over.

One interesting note, the Nets had a 21-point lead in the 4th quarter, yet we did not see MarShon Brooks until the 4-minute mark in the fourth quarter, when the game was absolutely out of hand. The rotation seems to have shrunk from 10 to nine guys, with Brooks seemingly out of it. Something we'll keep an eye on.

Blatche was hot tonight, scoring 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting and four steals, while Williams followed up his epic performance against the Wizards with 17 points and six assists in 34 minutes.

The Nets are coming off wins against the East's worst. The Hawks lost to the East's hottest team in OT.

At some point Friday night, Boeing 737's carrying the Nets and Hawks were flying, if not side-by-side then along the same route south to Atlanta. The Nets were no doubt on the more exhilarating flight, coming off a historic win at Barclays Center while the Hawks had to be a bit down. They lost in overtime to the Celtics, missing an opportunity at the end of regulation to end Boston's nine-game winning streak at TD Garden.

Saturday, the two teams will battle in Atlanta, a contest between teams in the fourth and sixth seeds in the East. A Nets win would also give them a 2-1 edge over the Hawks with a game to go. With the Nets owning a number of tiebreakers against several conference teams, that won't be unimportant come April.

The Hawks played well enough to win, playing a hot Celtics team, but Paul Pierce carried Boston to the win, scoring 27 and dishing the winning assist to Jason Terry. Atlanta played without Zaza Pachulia and Ivan Johnson, both of whom are questionable for the Nets as well. They started Johan Petro (oh yes, they did) and he could go up against Brook Lopez as well Saturday. Petro scored two points and grabbed four rebounds.

Atlanta was carried by Josh Smith with 32, Jeff Teague with 26 and Al Horford with 22 and 13. The Hawks have lost four of their last five. But three of those four losses were to the Lakers, Nuggets and Celtics, all of whom are hot. The other loss was to the lowly Suns.

The Nets, of course, are coming off two wins against two of the NBA's worst teams. As P.J. Carleismo pointed out post-game, Deron Williams phenomenal game covered up some nagging issues, including inconsistency from the second unit. Still, a Nets win and a Knicks loss to the Jazz would put the Nets a game and a half behind the Knicks for the division lead.

The game will be Joe Johnson's second in Atlanta since the Hawks traded him to the Nets. In his first, back on January 16, he scored 15 points, shooting only 4-of-15, 0-of-4 from three.
