Brooks wants more opportunities to prove himself, defends defense

MarShon Brooks wasn't mincing words when he spoke with Stefan Bondy before Friday night's game vs. the Rockets. He told Bondy that he still thinks he can a big-time scorer in the NBA, that he doesn't really care where he plays as long as he gets more time than he has this year.

Brooks played 10 minutes Friday, scoring six points on 2-of-3 shooting and going to the line once.

Here's a sampling in his own words:

On his potential as a scorer in the NBA: "I still believe if I got the minutes I could score 20 points per game."

On being offered as a trade piece: "I don’t really mind where I play basketball. I just want more of an opportunity than this year.

On his current role: ""I’m playing a totally different role than I thought I would. When I come off the bench I just do what I do, just play confident, just do everything with confidence, be decisive. I don’t really play in large spurts so when I get in I try to make a difference."

On Brooklyn: "Obviously, Brooklyn – I’d love to be here and have this opportunity. It’s the best situation in the NBA. New arena. A lot of excitement around a new team."

He also said he hasn't "really" talked to the coaching staff about his lack of playing time but defended his defense.

James Harden and Jeremy Lin were in town tonight, and they brought their high-powered offense with them. For the Nets, they were down a man, with Joe Johnson (foot) out of the lineup. In his place, C.J. Watson picked the start, but the Nets offense failed to keep pace with the Rockets, who were able to challenge the Nets' defense working both the inside-outside game and exploiting matchups -- small vs. big.

The lack of defensive adjustments, minus Johnson, plus too much Delfino equals a 106-96 loss. Apparently. This was the 13th straight loss for the Nets against the Rockets.

What's impressive about Houston's offense is that despite the fact that Harden scored just seven points in the first half, they still managed to put up 61 points in shoot 58 percent from the floor after two quarters. The Nets showed up offensively, so to speak, in the first half, with Brook Lopez really giving Omer Asik and Greg Smith all they could handle defensively, scoring 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but, again, it was all about defense -- or lack thereof.

The Rockets were able to get some open looks early, which caused the Nets to play on their heels early. Especially when the Rockets were able to hit 8-of-15 threes in the first half, forcing the Nets to pull out, getting beat on high pick-and-rolls and opening up some looks in the paint for guys like Smith, Asik and even Donatas Montiejunas.

Halftime: Nets down 8 points, 61-53.

In the second half the Nets fell flat early on. Lopez, to his credit, continued to give them some nice looks on offense, scoring 10 of the team's 22 second-quarter points, but really they were unable to get into a full-on rhythm. Even as -- or shall I say especially as -- the Rockets themselves went five minutes to start the quarter having only scored three points (a Carlos Delfino three, naturally).

The fourth quarter got a little interesting, as the Nets -- namely, the bench -- rattled off an 11-2 run to pull within five points, followed by a Harden 3-point play. But, then came Mirza Teletovic. Freed at last! He opened up the offense for the Nets, stretching the floor with back-to-back long jumpers, scoring nine 4th quarter points and pulling the Nets to within three, with two minutes remaining.

However, as you headline readers can gather, it was too much Carlos Delfino in the final two minutes of the ball game and "not enough" Joe Johnson. The Nets clearly missed Johnson down the stretch, as they had to rely on Watson, Keith Bogans and, yes, Teletovic to bridge the gap. And for as well as Teletovic and Watson played, they aren't "go-to" players.

And, not to mention, it was a little late on the part of coach P.J. Carlesimo to make the adjustment to go small. The defense had trouble with the stretch, especially the bigs (Reggie Evans, Andray Blatche, etc.).

Delfino, who made 6-of-9 threes and scored 22 points caused them far too many fits. On a night when Harden scored a mere 22 points, the Nets couldn't take advantage.

Brook Lopez scored a game-high 27 points, but Williams, who had 15 points and 13 assists, shot just 5-of-17 from the floor.

Unlike the Nets, the Rockets made some moves just before the deadline. They didn't pick up any All-Stars, but they did get some promising younger players who will make their Rocket debut at Barclays Center.

The Rockets picked up Thomas Robinson, Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt in exchange for Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas. The Kings, in the process of being sold, also received $1 million in the transaction. In addition, Houston dealt Marcus Morris to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a second-round draft pick in June.

Robinson was a player the Nets front office had hoped to nab in the 2012 draft before they traded away the pick and then lost in the draft lottery. The Rockets are thrilled to get ahold of him. It makes them even more athletic, never a good thing for the Nets.

"Thomas is a guy people are going to love," GM Daryl Morey said. "High energy, runs the floor, led the country in rebounding when he was at Kansas. He's a guy we really think has the potential to be our starting big man."

If that wasn't enough news for the Nets vs. Rockets game, try these entries from Wednesday night's boxscores. James Harden had a career high of 46 points on 14-of-19 shooting, including 7-of-8 from deep. Jeremy Lin, his much maligned backdourt mate, finished with 29 on 12-of-22 shooting, 3-of-5 from deep. Omer Asik, who Robinson is likely to line up with, had nine points, but 10 boards. They beat Oklahoma City, 122-119 with a big fourth quarter.

The usual height advantage won't be so big a deal vs. Houston. Asik is 7-foot, Robinson 6'10", Chandler Parsons, 6'9", Harden 6'6", and Lin 6'3". And how they can run. They beat the Nets 119-106 in Houston, with Harden going for 29 and Asik 20. It was one of Deron Williams better games, playing against Lin. He finished with 27 points, three rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a block. Joe Johnson didn't fare so well against Harden, shooting only 5-of-14.

A Brooklyn win and New York loss (to Toronto) would create a virtual tie atop the Atlantic Division. D-Will was scheduled to have cortisone shots today. Meanwhile, all the players mentioned in trade rumors: Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and Mirza Teletovic most prominently, can breathe sigh of relief. For Tyshawn Taylor, it will be a chance to renew old ties with TRob. The two led Kansas to the NCAA Finals last year.
