In interviews with Mike Francesca and Michael Kay, P.J. Carlesimo said that while he is "not changing much" from Avery Johnson's playbook, there are a number things that he and the coaching staff plan to do to improve the Nets offense, specifically some changes to the rotation, including getting a sense of when to substitute for the team's three offensive threats, Deron Wiliams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez.

"It's a good problem but it's going to take us a little while," Carlesimo told Francesa. He noted the team will have a couple of practices next week to focus on things. "We're still trying to figure out rotations ... not sure how to break it up ... looking at a lot of different combinations."

"We're still a work in progress," he told Kay later Wednesday. "We got three options we're trying to figure out" how best to use them.

While Carlesimo said the Nets couldn't play much better than they did last night, the win over the Thunder in OKC showed what the team is capable of. He emphasized to Francesa that the Nets can go a lot bigger if they want because they have four solid bigs in Lopez, Kris Humphries, Andray Blatche (who Francesa pronounced "BLAY-ch") and Reggie Evans. In somewhat of a surprise, the Nets coach also volunteered to Francesa that he hopes to work Mirza Teletovic into the mix.

"We still have to get him going him," said Carlesimo of the player his predecessor had given up on. "We need to establish his three point shooting."

Beyond that, Carlesimo said he is not worried about sub-par numbers from Williams and Johnson, telling both that he thinks there has been an "over analysis." He admitted to Francesa that while Williams is "beat right now," his game will come around as they stretch his minutes. He told Kay, "If we are sort this thing out and get the offensive the way it should be, I think his (Williams) numbers will come. but he is happy distributing the ball. he really is."

As for Mikhail Prokhorov, Carlesimo called him "the perfect NBA owner" despite his quick trigger with Johnson. He said he "knows the game well," and is not into "day to day meddling" while at the same time wanting to win and backing up that desire with resources. He noted that he had a good meeting with Prokhorov, Billy King and Dmitry Razumov, Prokhorov's No. 2, about the team last week. Bottom line, he said, is that he is in a "no-excuse situation."

He called the firing of Johnson "terrible" and "horrible," telling Kay, "I was not optimistic that I would get another chance to be a head coach in the league but I felt if it did happen, it would be because we had a lot of success in Brooklyn."

And if Prokhorov has his mind set on Jackson, Carlesimo told Kay, "None of that is anything I can control," explaining, "If they had given me a five year contract the day I took over, I don't think i would be coaching any differently...honestly."

Can't get enough of P. J. Carlesimo's raspy voice? You are in luck! The Nets interim coach will be radio much of the afternoon on Thursday.

He starts with Mike Francesa at 3:05 on WFAN, then Chris "Mad Dog" on Sirius XM radio at 3:30 p.m. and finally, Michael Kay on ESPN Radio at 4:30 p.m.

Expect Carlesimo to talk about Wednesday night's big win over Oklahoma City as well as his future prospects as the team's replacement for Avery Johnson. Only one problem for listeners: hand gestures are not visible on the radio.

P. J. Carlesimo has always had a fiery personality, from Seton Hall through head coaching stints with the Trail Blazers, Warriors and Sonics/Thunder. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn't. Kevin Durant said he appreciated it. Latrell Sprewell not so much.

After four games and one practice, between the Spurs and Thunder games, the Nets, particularly his star players, seem to have adjusted to his "game."

As Stefan Bondy writes on Sulia, quoting Deron Williams...

He did a great job of coaching tonight, of picking his spots, talking to me. He’s definitely passionate, and Avery (Johnson) was too. Avery was more reserved, wanted to be more even-keeled on the bench, he didn’t want, I don’t want to say, people see him sweat. PJ is just one those guys who is just fiery. If he’s feeling a certain way, he’s going to tell you.

Joe Johnson was even more direct about his new coach's directness, telling Rod Boone...

He's pretty forward, man. He just kind of tells you like it is. If you ain't playing worth a ----, he'll tell you, you ain't playing worth a ----. As players, some of us may respond a little different to it, but for me, I can appreciate it. He tries to do everything he can and everything in his power to put us in position to where we can be successful.

And Kris Humphries certainly knows about his coach's directness. Carlesimo took three steps out on to the court near the end of the game to call him out on sloppiness while handling an in-bounds play.

Deron Williams did a beautiful job against the Thunder defense last night.

There were plenty of game balls to go around after last night's victory against the Thunder. You had Joe Johnson scoring a season-high 33 points. Brook Lopez was dominant, with 25 points in 29 minutes. And Deron Williams had what may have been his best game of the season, scoring 19 points and dishing out 13 assists.

What really made Williams' performance so great was his game recognition, especially against a Thunder team that likes to set high traps on pick-and-rolls. The adjustment, followed by the conclusion that Williams didn't need to "do too much" in order for the Nets to win.

With the many issues Williams has had to deal with this season -- offensive struggles, fatigue, the Avery Johnson "situation," etc. -- it's been on him to figure out just what is wrong with his game. But after last night's performance, it's certainly worth our time -- and Mike Prada's efforts -- to talk about what went right.

Prada, over on SB Nation, praised Williams for his adjustments against the Thunder last night, which ultimately lead to his creating wide open shots for his teammates.

Prada writes:

I have been critical of Williams' decision-making before, and I have honestly been more disappointed by this element of his struggles than his poor shooting. Too often, Williams has tried to do too much. In this game, though, he navigated Oklahoma City's pick-and-roll traps beautifully and didn't try to beat them himself.

He then goes and breaks down three sets, showing frame-by-frame how Williams makes the adjustments against the pick-and-roll traps.

It really is a great breakdown on something Nets fans hope to see more of from D-Will. It's important that he recognize that he doesn't need to score 20-plus points per game in order for this team to win, but instead he needs to make the proper adjustments and create offense for his teammate -- adjust to what the defense gives him.

Really, it's probably in both his and the team's best interest that Williams continues to not "do too much."

Getting the call, Tyshawn Taylor earns his coach's praise

A little more than a week ago, after returning from one game at Springfield, Tyshawn Taylor talked about how he'd play anywhere and how he hoped that when his number was called, he'd be mentally as well as physically ready.

"For me, someone who has played a lot, to not really be playing at all, but I think it’s just part of the process," he told Josh Newman of SNY. "Just learning to be patient a little bit and staying ready. That’s kind of the hardest part, staying mentally ready."

Wednesday night, his number was called and he responded. C.J. Watson was active but hurting and P.J. Carlesimo used Taylor for extended minutes. Afterwards, he cited Taylor's role as critical to the team's big win over the Thunder.

"Tyshawn had to play some big minutes," said the Nets interim coach after the game. "Obviously his minutes in the second half were a little better. In the fourth quarter, he gave us some really big minutes and we were able to get these guys a couple of minutes rest. I mean we didn't want them to play 47 minutes and Tyshawn enabled us to do that."

The boxscore shows Taylor didn't score or hand out an assist but it also shows no turnovers and no personal fouls. More importantly, Taylor played good defense, particularly against Russell Westbrook. He's now played in four of the last five games, scoring 13 points in 41 total minutes.

Aside from a 3rd quarter slump, the Nets played were at their absolute best against the Thunder.

The Nets offense looked good early, scoring more points (7) in the first two minutes of this game than they did the entire 3rd quarter of Monday's game against the Spurs. It was, in fact, a sign of things to come as the Nets built up a big lead then survived the Thunder's inevitable assault and pulled away at the end for a 110-93 win in Oklahoma City.

It was the Nets second biggest margin of victory this season, displacing the 16-point win last week over the Bobcats. It was also the Thunder's worse loss of the season. Prior to Wednesday, Oklahoma City's worst loss was a 10-point loss to the Grizzlies a month and a half ago. It also ended the Thunder's 12-game winning streak at the Chesapeake Energy Arena ... and Kevin Durant's streak of never being ejected from an NBA. As time wound down, Durant was tossed after arguing a foul call.

The win left the team both exhilarated and relieved, following the 31-point loss to the Spurs.

"We wanted to come out together and make a little statement against these guys," said Brook Lopez, adding, "We can be like that every night and that's the kind of output we want."

P.J. Carlesimo, now 3-1 as Nets interim coach, called the bounce back from San Antonio "incredible" and added, "We set the bar a little bit high. we showed ourselves what we are capable of doing."

Deron Williams agreed. Said Williams: "Hopefully, we realize this is how we can play every night and how we should play."

Brooklyn shot 64 percent in the first quarter, scoring 33 points (most points scored in a quarter on the road) on 14-of-22 shooting. We call this, the anti-3rd quarter performance. It was certainly interesting to see a starting frontcourt which consisted of Brook Lopez-Reggie Evans-Gerlad Wallace. It was the perfect mix of defense-offense-size, to counter the Thunder's big line of Kevin Durant-Serge Ibaka-Kendrick Perkins.

Oklahoma City looked terrible on the defensive end in the first half, letting the Nets get open looks and allowing them to pull ahead by 23 points. They shot 60 percent in the first, taking a 61-45 lead into halftime, with Joe Johnson scoring 20 points and Deron Williams dishing nine assists to just one turnover.

And then, we held our collective breath as the third quarter began.

The Thunder made their run, as expected, pulling to within nine points in the first five minutes of the third, and then, later, to within three. The run was expected, no question about that, but the story was more about how the Nets would respond. The quarter itself wasn't pretty, but it also wasn't San Antonio.

The Nets were out-scored 27-15 in the third.

They continued to battle in the 4th quarter, seemingly going bask-for-basket early on. Joe Johnson took over midway through the quarter, scoring eight straight for the Nets, with a big bucket after the Thunder had tied the game. But, Johnson (33 points on 11-of-19 shooting), Lopez (25 points on 11-of-17 shooting) and Williams (19 points, 13 assists, two turnovers and five steals) wouldn't let this one get away, taking it 110-93. Over the last five games, Lopez is averaging 23.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and shooting 58.8 percent.

It was a great sign for Brooklyn to see them close out a game against the best team in the NBA (record-wise). The Nets played a complete game on both ends of the floor -- aside from their normal 3rd quarter slump -- shooting 50 percent from the floor (25-of-29 from the free-throw line) and forcing 19 turnovers.

As Joe Johnson put it during his post-game interview on YES, "We know we're better than a .500 team."

Considering, it's hard to argue against this being the best win of the season.
