For the Nets, finally a player who leaves it all on the floor

Late in the game Friday night, someone upfront texted us that Gerald Wallace is "worth every penny and the #6 pick." You won't get any argument here. The Nets haven't had such an emotional leader since Kenyon Martin left.

It wasn't just his extraordinary stats, a season high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting (including 3-of-6 from downtown), 10 rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocked shots in FIFTY minutes vs. Detroit. Nor his THREE blocks on DUNKS Saturday night. It was all about what Greg Anthony said was behind Billy King's decision to trade for him last March, his "impact on the collective." He makes everyone want to play hard.

"We needed to win this, confidence-wise, momentum-wise, and just for the spirit of the team," Wallace said after the Pistons game. And he did everything he could to ensure it, leaving only one thing for Joe Johnson to finish up. He banged, he crashed, he fell, he rose, he finished.

"He’s our energy, our life," said Deron Williams. "We had a lot of mistakes out there and he kind of covered up for them... He does everything for us."

"I’m (not ever) concerned," Wallace said of his style. "That’s part of the game, I already know that... I don’t think, I can’t play thinking. Whatever happens happens. I’ll worry about it tomorrow."

Visiting players continue to be blown away by Barclays

This wasn't Lawrence Frank's first visit to Barclays Center. The Nets invited him and other former coaches to the first Jay-Z concert but he, his players and Pistons long-time GM Joe Dumars were all amazed at what they saw, from the exterior to the visitors locker room. Like a lot of others who've already visited, the first surprise was the turntable elevators that take team buses from the street to the event level where the visitors locker room can be found.

"If you went to Disney's Tower of Terror, this is the slow version of it," Frank joked. "The bus on the elevator is amazing," said Charlie Villanueva, a New York native. "A billion dollars, that's what it was?" When told he was correct, he said: "This is what a billion dollars look like."

Everyone agreed, as have other teams, that the visitors locker room is particularly spacious and well-appointed, which lets visiting players know the team is not scrimping ... on anything. "So many arenas you go to, it's so tight in there," Dumars said. "You have 15 guys, five or six coaches, two or three front-office people and it's a 13-by-15 room. What they've done here is created a lot of space in the back areas for guys to get around."

On to Chicago...

With Jerry Seinfeld watching from Jay-Z's seats, Joe Johnson let fly a buzzer-beater at the end of double-overtime to give the Nets their second straight win, a 107-105 victory over the Pistons at Barclays Center on Friday.

The Nets led by as many as 17-points in the second quarter, winning the period 36-22. But the Pistons turned the game around with a 30-14 third. Though the Nets took a couple of brief leads in the fourth, they continued to struggle offensively and a 7-0 Detroit run put the visitors up six with 1:32 left in the game.

The Nets came back though and Gerald Wallace tipped in a Johnson miss to tie the game at 90 with 21 seconds left. Brandon Knight and Deron Williams each missed potential game-winning jumpers, sending the game to overtime.

In the first OT, another huge offensive rebound by Wallace allowed Johnson to tie the game with a runner with 19 seconds to go, and Rodney Stuckey's game-winner on the other end was long.

The Nets missed their first six shots of the second overtime, but they fell behind only three, and drives by Wallace and Johnson put them up 104-103 with 26 seconds left. Reggie Evans then fouled Greg Monroe, but Monroe missed both free throws. After Johnson split a pair with 10 seconds to go, Kyle Singler put back a Knight miss to tie the game back up with 5.8 seconds on the clock.

The Nets then got the ball to Johnson, who stroked a 22-foot, step-back jumper over Tayshaun Prince at the buzzer. Johnson said he knew it was going in from the time it left his fingers. "That’s why I kind of faded back and my trot was kind of swagged out," Johnson said. For the crowd, it was an exhilarating moment and a relief.

The Nets shot 45 percent and committed just 11 turnovers, five by Williams. Johnson led all scorers with 28 points on 12-for-22 shooting. Wallace finished with a season-high 25 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Williams added 17 points and six assists, while Andray Blatche added 16 points before fouling out in overtime.

Brook Lopez played 24 minutes in his return to action, showing some signs of rust as he scored nine points on 4-for-10 shooting.

Brook is back, but which night remains the question.

Brook Lopez is listed as probable for Friday's game vs. the Pistons, but if he does play he will be held out Saturday vs. the Bulls. That's the word out of shootaround Friday morning.

As Rod Boone tweeted, "Avery (Johnson) basically said Brook won't be playing in both of <s>#</s>Nets upcoming back-to-backs. So he either goes tonight or tomorrow." Lopez told beat writers he is itching to get back out there, and felt good about getting to run some 3-on-3 at Thursday's practice. He will play limited minutes.

In addition, the Nets announced that Jerry Stackhouse won't play in either of the team's weekend games, out wth a sore knee. That would seem to open up more minutes for MarShon Brooks and Keith Bogans.

Is it Brook Lopez or Andray Blatche in the middle Friday?

The Nets will try to extend their winning streak Friday when the Pistons, led by Lawrence Frank, make their first appearance at Barclays Center. But the big question is the availability of Brook Lopez for the first time in seven games. David Aldridge tweeted Thursday afternoon that "Nets expect to have Brook Lopez (foot sprain) back either Friday against Detroit or Saturday in Chicago. Has practiced without pain." Lopez may be physically ready but still not mentally ready to test his foot.

The Pistons are in their second year of rebuilding under Frank. By the looks of it, the rebuilding is showing promise but is still a ways away from producing a playoff run. They're 7-17 overall, and a miserable 2-11 on the road. There are a number of positives: Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight, 22 and 21 respectively, are their leading scorers and Andre Drummond, all 6'10" and 270 pounds of him, is 19 and showing signs of extraordinary potential. Kyle Singler, who sat out last year in Europe, is proving he can play in the NBA, becoming a solid bench presence. He's 24.

Overall, they don't shoot that well, although they do get to the line, sixth in the NBA. Defensively, they're fair to middling, but bad at giving up points in the paint, giving up 43 a game, 27th in the league. But they're also a top 10 team in paint scoring, also at 43 per game. They're good at building leads, bad at keeping them. The Pistons have held a double-digit lead in eight of their 17 losses. About what you'd expect from a young club.

Frank, a New Jersey native, called the Nets move to Brooklyn "bittersweet." "You hate to see your state lose a team," Frank said. "Yet at the same time, I do know all the equity that they put into it. I'm happy for them." Frank was a Nets guest at the first Jay-Z concert, opening night of the arena.

For the Nets, there are some who are suggesting that it's time for Deron Williams to take some time off. No indication whatsover that's going to happen, not with him saying, in somewhat of a hyperbole, that he hasn't played a dominant game all year.
