It was fun while it lasted.

For about 2 1/2 quarters in Miami on Saturday, the Nets looked better than ever. But things fell apart after that as the Heat turned up the defensive pressure and rolled to a 102-89 victory. The victory extended Miami's winning streak to six games and ended Brooklyn's at five.

The Nets started out hot and led by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter. They led by nine at the half, but six turnovers in the third quarter helped the Heat to come back and take a four-point lead into the final quarter. Miami gave the Nets opportunities to make it interesting in the fourth, but the Nets made just one of their first 11 shots in the period and committed six more turnovers before the Heat pulled away.

Brooklyn finished with 19 turnovers and shot just 6-for-28 from three and 17-for-27 from the line. Six Nets scored in double-figures, led by Andray Blatche with 20 points. Deron Williams added 12 assists to his 10 points, but shot just 3-for-11.

Dwyane Wade led the Heat with a season-high 34 points, while LeBron James finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

In post game comments, players on both teams made it clear they believed the two are not so different.

Said Wade: "We’re supposed to win at home. It’s gonna be a tough game in Brooklyn, and we’ll really see (how good they are)."

"It’s early in the season. It’s only December," added James. "They’re going to continue to get better, but they have a good team and they were missing a big piece tonight. They’re really good.”,"

"What gap? We think we're just as good as them," said Gerald Wallace. "We controlled this game. We had an opportunity to win and we should have won."

No one but the Nets wanted Andray Blatche. Now, he's become a key part of the team's rotation ... and their fourth leading scorer. Zach Harper of CBS Sports says where the Wizards failed, the Nets have succeeded.

Avery Johnson said even if Brook Lopez is cleared to play when he's next evaluated on Monday, it would take a "miracle" for him to play Tuesday vs. the Thunder. Why? Because Johnson likes to have returning players go through at least on practice before they step on the court for real. And notes Stefan Bondy, he's still limping.

So, Andray Blatche is likely to get another start vs. OKC. As Zach Harper of CBS Sports writes, Blatche has been giving the Nets big minutes this season. It proves, Harper writes, the importance of a team's development program.

Harper notes that Blatche's per 36 numbers are the best of his career (and at almost 10 points a game, he is the Nets fourth leading scorer). He also notes that there may very well be some truth in what Blatche said last week about the Wizards lack of development and the Nets' aggressiveness in pushing Blatche. Reclamation projects aren't easy.

Blatche's is a story that reminds us just how important mentors, coaching staffs and the development of a young player are in the NBA. It's why the rookie symposiums and developmental people within an organization mean nearly as much as the character of a player you acquire to your team.

Revisionist history or credit due to Billy King, Avery Johnson, Mario Elie and veteran players like Jerry Stackhouse, Keith Bogans and Reggie Evans? What matters is that Blatche has an opportunity to revitalize his career. As the 26-year-old said last week, "Now I'm in a whole different organization. A different part of my life, that I'm going to be able to succeed in."

Each game, the Miami Heat Index, ESPN's site devoted to the Miami Heat (and nothing else), does a short analysis of the next Heat opponent. Three writers, stats maven Tom Haberstroth and two long-time beat reporters Brian Windhorst and Michael Wallace offer their opinions on three statements. They are asked to respond "Fact" or "Fiction" to the three statements. It's called the "3 on 3 Preview." For the Nets, the three statements are:

Fact or Fiction: This is a matchup of the top two seeds in the East.

Fact or Fiction: The Heat should have signed Andray Blatche on a flier.

Fact or Fiction: Joe Johnson has had a more disappointing start than Dwyane Wade.

While the three have different opinions on the second and third statements, all agree that the Nets don't qualify (yet or at all) as a possible top two seed. It's a given that the Heat do. The main argument made by the three is that either the Celtics or Knicks (both of whom the Nets have beaten in the last week, if memory serves) will rise up.

Wallace writes, "once Boston hits its stride, I think the Celtics will be the team occupying that spot directly behind the Heat in the East." For the record, the Nets are 8-1 vs. conference opponents, the Heat 5-1.

Windhorst says he's "Not ready to give that to Nets yet" but admits, "Mikhail Prokhorov has said he expects conference finals, he might be on to something."

Who would have believed it? Fifteen games into the season and the Nets are going into Miami with an chance at taking over the lead in the Eastern Conference! Brooklyn at 11-4 and riding their second five game winning streak of the season, will play Miami who's only a half game better at 11-3. A Nets win Saturday night would give them a half-game lead over the Heat and the Knicks, who are idle. As Kris Humphries said after Friday's win, "Five in a row, but the one that we need is tomorrow night in Miami."

Whoosh.

Of course, the Heat blew out the Nets by 30 earlier in the season and Brooklyn will be without Brook Lopez for the second straight game. But as Deron Williams says, the Nets will have Gerald Wallace, who was hurt for that first game, and are playing better all around, particularly on defense. In fact, the win over Orlando Friday night vaulted the Nets into the the seventh spot in defensive efficiency and second spot in points allowed, just behind Memphis. Avery Johnson, who's looking more like a leading candidate for Coach of the Year every game, had hoped the Nets could be a top 10 defensive team. No one believed him. Actually, they're better than that! They're not that far out of fifth!

Whoosh.

For Miami, the game is a big one as well. They too have a five-game winning streak and are undefeated, 7-0, at home. Both teams are 8-2 over the last 10. Only the Grizzlies, at 9-1, are hotter. The Heat are the best shooting team in the NBA, just a tad below 50 percent. They're also the best three-point shooting team, at 43 percent. Where they fall down is in rebounding (29th) and defensive efficiency (26th). There's also been some sniping at Dwyane Wade whose athleticism has been sapped by nagging foot injuries. At 31, he needs to compensate but his three point shooting percentage is a mere 16.7 percent.

Of course, the Heat have the best player in the game in LeBron James, the likely starting center for the East come the All-Star Game in Chris Bosh, the leading three point shooter in NBA history in Ray Allen and a lot of other talent. But the bottom line is simple: the Nets and Heat are in the same sentence when talking about Eastern Conference supremacy.

WHOOSH!
