If Joe Johnson had a five-stretch in Atlanta like he's had at the start of his career in Brooklyn, there wouldn't be the concern there is among fans. It's five games, after all. But JJ was the Nets signature addition this off-season and he's owed $89.2 million. Is it time to worry? He and his coach say no.

At first glance, the numbers would suggest Joe Johnson is not having a good season. His career numbers are 17.7 points per game on 44.3 percent shooting overall and 36.9 percent from deep, in 36.6 minutes game. This year, both his point totals (13.6) and shooting percentage (36.2 percent) are way off the norm, although his three-point shooting is way up (45.0 percent). Is this something to be concerned about or just an anomalous five-game stretch?

"There’s a possibility that Joe can average 22 points a game for us, or he can average 16. Was this his most efficient game? No. But he’ll get there. He’s playing with Deron Williams, he’s playing with Brook Lopez," Avery Johnson told Dave D'Alessandro, seemingly explaining that he's adjusting to having other scorers on the roster.. "After 10 or 20 games or so, 40 games, I’ll see what his efficiency number should be, and that’s going to be our target, and we’ll get there."

Joe Johnson himself is not concerned ...that much. "Definitely. It will come together soon," the 31-year-old shooting guard told ESPN's Mike Mazzeo after going 3-for-13 from the field Sunday. "Sooner or later, it’s going to come. Obviously I haven’t been shooting a high percentage, but I’m still feeling my way around and trying to get acclimated to the players around me."

Is it possible that the Nets big off-season acquisition is on the downside of his career, with $89.2 million still on the books? It's possible, stats would suggest otherwise. Last year, John Hollinger wrote recently, was Johnson's most efficient season in Atlanta.

It wasn't pretty, but the Nets improved to 3-2 with Sunday's win.

This one wasn't nearly as easy as Friday's win in Orlando, but the Nets beat the Magic for the second straight time on Sunday, grinding out a 82-74 victory at Barclays Center.

After a 35-17 first quarter, it looked like another blowout. But the Nets' offense struggled after that and the Magic were able to hang around. They led by 15 early in the fourth quarter, but the Magic cut the lead down to five with 2:05 left. Deron Williams and Brook Lopez then answered with big buckets to hold off Orlando and the Nets escaped with an eight-point win.

Both teams shot less than 40 percent overall, but the Nets outscored the Magic 21-3 from three-point range and outrebounded them 55-41. Lopez led all scorers with 20 points, Kris Humphries added 14 points and 21 rebounds, and Williams finished with 17 points, seven boards and seven assists.

The win put the Nets at 3-2, the first time they have had a winning record after five games since the 2007-08 team and it was also the first time since 2006 that the Nets held an opponent to 75 points or less in two consecutive games.

D-Will was unhappy after the game with a non-call in the fourth quarter that left him with a sore left ankle.

"I came down on the defender’s foot which was supposed to be a foul. That’s a point of emphasis," Williams said. "I missed 13 games my third year in the NBA (because of a similar play). It’s definitely a dangerous play and it should’ve been a foul."

No word yet if MarShon Brooks will play Sunday afternoon vs. the Magic in Brooklyn, but if he does, his minutes will be determined, in large part, by how much defense he plays and how well. Defense is no longer a luxury for the Nets and Brooks. He has to play it.

In the both the latest episode of "The Association," MarShon Brooks defense takes a big hit. Avery Johnson is shown in front of a big screen monitor pointing at a freeze frame of a game video. "Right here with Marshon is? This is what we don't want to do." In the background, his teammates snicker and laugh. Brooks defense is bad.

There's also some praise for Brooks' offense on the clip available on NBA.com. Keith Bogans, who's made his living playing D, is overheard on the sideline talking to Jerry Stackhouse. "The boy got more offense than anybody I've ever seen," says Bogans in a bit of exaggeration, adding, "if he could play defense it would be hard to get him off the floor."

In an interview setting, Bogans explains, "MarShon - big time scorer. Can score the ball in bunches and he's so young, he's just playing off raw talent." Deron Williams adds, "MarShon is still just learning how to play the game. He's working hard every day. and we love him on this team."

In fact, Bogans has become a defensive mentor for Brooks. He tells Tim Bontemps, "I’m helping him as much as I can," said Bogans, who says he's seen improvement this season. "When we first started, I told him that he’s so athletic on the offensive end, I’m going to do what I can to pick up his game on the defensive end."

Less than two days after hammering the Magic in Orlando, the Nets will welcome the Magic to Barclays Center for the first afternoon game in Brooklyn. The Nets win Friday was historic on a number of levels. It was their biggest margin of victory on the road ever. It was the Magic's second worst loss (by one point) ever. It was the first time since 2009 that a team lost by 30 only to come back and win by 30+ the next game. And no Magic starter went to the line the entire game.

So just as the Nets had motivation after the Heat game, the Magic will have motivation Sunday. The Magic line-up will remain unchanged, with Jameer Nelson still doubtful and Al Harrington and Hedo Turkoglu are still out. No Gerald Wallace Sunday. MarShon Brooks is a game-time decision. Both have left ankle sprains.
