NBA Player Breakdown: Kyrie Irving’s Mental Structure

In a league that caters to hard facts and statistics, certain aspects of a players game completely go overlooked. This leads us to believe that certain players are built for things they really aren’t. For example, high stake moments in the playoffs. How many of our most favorite athletes have completely taken over all regular season but when it’s win or go home, they fold. There are only a few players that have even experienced such high leverage moments and even fewer players have overcome such a feat. Kyrie Irving is one of those players and a lot of it is due to the way his mind works. So let’s take a look.

For starters, let’s look at who Kyrie’s mentors are. The first is his Father who sacrificed his own basketball career in order to raise his child. The second is Kobe Bryant, the closest thing we have ever seen to the legendary Michael Jordan. And we all know the iconic Mamba Mentality mantra Kobe consistently advocates and it’s no surprise that a player as gutsy as Kyrie would follow in his footsteps.

Now let’s take a look at the Cleveland years against the Golden State dynasty. June 4, 2015, Kyrie fractures his knee cap in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. A devastating injury for most to come back from. Fast forward one year later as Golden State tips through the league in 2016 as they shatter the 95-96 Chicago Bulls 72 win season. Kyrie finds himself in a game 7 with overwhelming odds stacked against him. The score is tied 89-89. Lebron defers to him. Stephen Curry, the greatest shooter of all time is also guarding him in the Golden State arena. The gym is rocking! Kyrie is stone cold. He lulls Steph to sleep and knocks a three point dagger right in his face to claim the NBA Championship! This is the type of person I need on my team!

Most of the great players in this league have never stepped up to the plate and converted in a situation as intense as a final. I’m a huge advocate of experience being the best practice and what can give you more experience than a Game 7 go ahead bucket? I say nothing could even be remotely comparable.

With that said, I hope you Brooklyn fans are as excited as Hoop Firm! This is time for the Nets to claim their throne as the face of New York. It is time to embrace that "mamba mentality" Kyrie Irving so willingly possesses. Brooklyn stand up!
