An all-new @BrooklynNets Magazine Free Agent Special premieres tonight on YES at 11 PM! pic.twitter.com/4qz57Us5Yi
Both Sean Marks and Kenny Atkinson sat for the segment along with Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris, Jarrett Allen, Rodions Kurucs, Dzanan Musa and Nicolas Claxton.
YES says the show will focus on the “excitement” of adding Durant and Irving as well as the building of the Nets culture; saying goodbye to players who helped build the culture and the budding rivalry with the Knicks.
“The initial, I guess, surprise was when we got the Instagram post that he put out there. That beat us to the punch,” Marks tells YES, adding: “The pitch is 3 years in the making, just trying to establish yourself as a group. That is a selfless group. A group that wants to compete at the highest level.”
Like many fans, Atkinson said he didn’t take a breath until everything was truly a done deal. “To me, until they signed, I was still nervous.”
And Caris LeVert swears he didn’t know until we all did. “I was at my house. I found out the same way everybody else found out. I got an alert on my phone. Obviously I was really excited about it.
“I remember my first year it was a totally different roster. I feel like we were the laughingstock of the NBA. A lot of people were laughing at us. And now it’s the other way around.”
Marks spoke as well about Irving’s time —and reputation— in Boston.
“From our standpoint. Bring him in. Bring him into our group. Let’s see what he adds to the culture. People talk about, ‘well, what can he take away from the culture. How will the culture change?’ We know the culture is going to have to adapt.”
And Atkinson talked about all the players who got the Nets to where they are.
“You’re going to make me cry. Because if I start listing the players from the beginning. Randy Foye. Brook Lopez. Bojan Bogdanovic. Ed Davis. Jared Dudley. All those players were a part of it. Part of our fabric. And remain a part for me forever.”
Grady and Kustok spoke as well to Frank Isola of The Athletic and Brian Lewis of the Post for the segment.
“It really seems now like Brooklyn is a basketball team in New York,” . To get a star like Kevin Durant. You didn’t trade for him. He picked you.”
