Isaiah Whitehead’s 26 points in 24 minutes leads Long Island to critical win

New, comments

Isaiah Whitehead dominated Sunday’s Long Island Nets game vs. the cellar-dwelling Greensboro Swarm, scoring 26 points and grabbing five rebounds in 24 minutes as the Nets affiliate blew out the Hornets affiliate, 126-93.

The win was critical for the Nets who are barely in the playoff wildcard picture with three games to go, all of them on the road. Three teams in each G-League conference get wild card slots in the playoffs along with the three division winners.

As things currently stand, the Raptors 905 have clinched one of the Eastern Conference wildcards, leaving three teams —the Nets, Grand Rapids Drive and Lakeland Magic— to fight over the remaining two. Going into the final week of the regular season, the Nets and Drive have 26-21 records with the Magic a half-game back at 25-21. The Nets and Magic play Tuesday in Lakeland.

Whitehead, playing small forward, finished the game 10-of-14 overall and 4-of-7 from deep. He didn’t record an assist, but he did dominate...

Beyond Whitehead’s performance, Nets forward Thomas Wimbush notched his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench, while forward Milton Doyle registered his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes.

Long Island forward J.J. Moore contributed to the victory 18 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench, while guard Jeremy Senglin fell just shy of a triple-double with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in 32 minutes off the bench.

The Nets led 68-41 at halftime, with 21 of their first-half points coming from Whitehead, who shot .889 (8-of-9) from the field and .500 (1-of-2) from 3-point range up to that point in the game. In the second half, the Nets led Greensboro by as many as 37 points, their largest lead against an opponent in a game this season. The home team’s 33-point win was also their largest margin of victory this season.
