THE STORY: Game Preview

As Wednesday night’s game was winding down, Ian Eagle described the Nets loss to the Jazz as “another gut punch”. He was right. The frustration percolating throughout the fanbase is palpable, and it’s getting to the point where a lot of us are wondering whether or not tanking is our best option. Might it be? I don’t know.

At the same time, the Nets are 10th in the East, just two games out of a playoff spot. One hot week and we’re back in this thing. It might still be too soon to make any drastic decisions, but waiting too long could have its own consequences.

While the Nets continue to suss out their standing in the league, the Grizzlies are heading up to the Barclays center for yet another Nets match-up with a Western Conference opponent. This time it’s an over performing team looking to bounce back from a recent three-game skid. Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are both finally healthy again, and if this Memphis franchise was in the East like it geographically probably should be, they’d most likely lock up a top four seed year in and year out. Let’s get into it. As it is, they’re six in the West.

During their 3 game losing streak, the Grizzlies have blown an 8 point second half lead late against the Clippers, a 13 point second half lead against the Knicks, and then a 17 point second half lead against the Raptors. Grizzly Bear Blue’s McCarty Maxwell recently went in depth on the Grizzlies issues blowing leads, and you can check that out here. The 3rd quarter especially has been a big problem for the Grizzlies.

They’ve been outscored by a total of 29 points in the 3rd quarter throughout their losing streak. Brooklyn is a young and feisty team, but if the Grizzlies can build a lead they can force the Nets into submission. However, if they give the young Nets a glimmer of hope, they will run with it on their way to a victory. J.B. Bickerstaff needs to do what he can to keep this team from coming out flat after halftime.
