Free agency is winding down, as is summer league. We should know more in a few days about how the roster will ultimately shape up, who stays, who goes, who joins the party. The Nets can carry up to 20 players through training camp.
A lot of important dates this week.
July 7 to 17 - NBA Summer League at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas finishes up. Nets play Thursday afternoon at 4:30 vs. winner of Wednesday’s Nuggets-Rockets game. It’s the start of the playoff round of summer league.
July 12 - Wizards complete process of signing Otto Porter following their match of Nets four-year, $106.5 million offer. The Nets will once again have access to $24.75 million in cap space. Once the trade for DeMarre Carroll is complete, the team will have about $16.5 million available for the rest of free agency.
July 12 - Nets can acquire Allen Crabbe or Tyler Johnson in a trade. Teams who bid on restricted free agents can’t acquire them for a year after a match. No indication Portland or Miami is going in that direction.
July 13 - Last day for teams to unilaterally withdraw qualifying offers to restricted free agents, making them unrestricted.
July 15 - Last day for teams to issue required tenders to unsigned first-round picks; those players become free agents on July 16 if not tendered.
July 16 - Quincy Acy’s $1,709,538 guarantees for 2017-18 unless the Nets refuse to exercise his team option.
Late July - Spencer Dinwiddie’s contract guarantees for $50,000 for 2017-18. His contract required him to participate in summer league and summer conditioning program.
Late July/Early August - NBA schedule is released. This year’s season will be longer with fewer back-to-backs, more built-in rest. So maybe the schedule will be out earlier? What to look for? D’Angelo Russell’s return to Los Angeles, Brook Lopez’s return to Brooklyn. Order popcorn now. Also, first time they play Miami whose fans (and execs) are still steamed about Nets decision to rest their top three scorers on the last game of last season. Also, first visit to Barclays by the Wizards.
August 3 to August 16 - FIBA World Cup European Pre-Qualifiers in Portugal. Nets’ stash Aleksandar Vezenko plays for Bulgaria.
August 23 - G-League expansion draft. Long Island Nets can protect up to nine players rights in this year’s draft. With four new teams, current teams likely to lose at least two players.
August 25 to September 3 — FIBA Americas Cup in Argentina. Canada’s Andrew Nicholson is likely to play for Canada. Argentina’s Juan Pablo Vaulet is out for the summer after ankle surgery. The competition is in Cordoba, Argentina, JPV’s hometown.
August 31 to September 17 — Eurobasket 2017 in Turkey. As of now, only two players on the roster are eligible: Justin Hamilton, who has dual U.S. - Croatian citizenship, and Timofey Mozgov, who is on the Russian roster. Hamilton has been non-committal about playing for Croatia. Mozgov has been enthused about his Russian obligations. Also, it will be Nets assistant coach Chris Fleming’s last turn as Germany’s national team coach.
August 31 — Last day teams may waive players and apply the stretch provision to their 2017/18 salaries.
September 5 - Nets must renew their offers to any stashed players. As of now, that means Juan Pablo Vaulet and Aleksandar Vezenkov, taken last Thursday night at No. 57. Of course, if the Nets sign Vaughn this summer to either a Brooklyn or Long Island deal, no need for the letter.
October 31 - Spencer Dinwiddie’s salary guarantees at $250,000 for 2017-18. Archie Goodwin’s salary guarantees at $200,000 for 2017-18.
October 31 - Nets must exercise rookie options for Rondae-Hollis Jefferson and Caris LeVert, fourth year for RHJ, third year for CLV. Not an issue.
Late October - D-League Draft. It’s not like the NBA Draft. It has different rules and is held via conference call.
Early November - Long Island Nets will open their first season at their new home, the renovated Nassau Coliseum. They play one preseason game at Nassau vs. the Westchester Knicks.
First week of December - Nets will play the Spurs and Thunder in Mexico City as part of NBA Global Games.
December 10 -- Nets can acquire Donatas Motiejunas, one year after the Rockets matched their offer on the big man.
January 10 - All partially and non- guaranteed deals become fully guaranteed, specifically in the Nets case for Dinwiddie and Goodwin if they remain with the team.
