The Nets later confirmed the signing and Goodwin practiced with the team at the HSS Training Center Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old Kentucky product has been playing for the Greensboro Swarm of the D-League.
Goodwin fills the Nets 15th roster spot, open since the Nets waived Luis Scola. He will wear No. 10.
He’s the 22nd player the Nets have had under contract this season. All but Marcus Thornton has suited up. The number is tied for the highest in franchise history.
Goodwin last appeared in the NBA earlier this season. In three games with the Pelicans, he averaged five points. Prior to that, he played three years with the Suns. His best year was 2015-16 when he averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds In 19.5 minutes per game.
In Greensboro, Goodwin averaged 17 points and five rebounds but shot less than 25 percent from three.
Here’s some highlights from a recent game when he scored 24 points and 10 rebounds vs. the Long Island Nets...
And his best game in the NBA, a 24-point performance vs. the Hawks, which he topped off with a game winning shot...
Kenny Atkinson said Goodwin would get minutes, but probably not against the Knicks on Thursday: “He’s got to get his feet under him - probably not the first game, (maybe) against the Celtics or Mavs."
Atkinson said he thinks of Goodwin as a combo guard: "I think he can play both - I'm anxious to see for myself."
Goodwin was originally selected with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Thunder before being traded to the Suns via Golden State on draft night. He spent one year at the University of Kentucky, earning SEC All-Freshman team honors.
The Nets are already down one shooting guard. Joe Harris is in the NBA concussion protocol— and has a sprained left shoulder— after a fall last week. Then, last night, Sean Kilpatrick left the game with a hamstrIng injury and did not return.
