Call him a stretch 5. Justin Hamilton, a seven-footer with a sweet stroke, signed with the Nets Monday. The Nets didn't release the contract details. According to some reports, he received the room exception, roughly $6 million over two years. Others suggest the money will come out of cap space.
Hamilton, drafted by the 76ers, has played or was under contract with Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix and Minnesota. Last season, he played in the Spanish League with Valencia.
"Justin is an energetic big with the ability to stretch the floor," said Sean Marks. "He is coming off a successful season in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues and will add depth to our frontcourt rotation."
Hamilton played 40 games for Valencia, averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting better than 40 percent from deep. The son of a Croatian mother, Hamilton was supposed to play for Team Croatia in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament -- with Bojan Bogdanovic -- but opted out to pursue an NBA contract.
Kevin Pelton of ESPN.com quickly praised the signing when he first disclosed on July 1, calling Hamilton a "great snag" by Marks.'
