The Brooklyn Nets will introduce their new head coach, Kenny Atkinson, at a press conference on Monday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m., at HSS Training Center. The press conference will be televised live on the YES Network and streamed live on both the Nets’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BrooklynNets) and brooklynnets.com.
Atkinson was hired by the Nets more than a month ago, but continued as an assistant coach with the Hawks until they were eliminated by the Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs this weekend.
The press conference comes one day before the NBA lottery where the Nets pick is owned by the Celtics.
The 48-year-old Atkinson, a Long Island native, spent four years in Atlanta, the last two as lead assistant to Mike Budenholzer. Before that, he was an assistant with the Knicks under Mike D'Antoni for four years. He spent 14 years playing overseas.
Atkinson is likely to be asked about his vision for the team as well as team personnel, free agents and his staff. Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that former Magic head coach and Spurs assistant Jacque Vaughn will be his No. 2, but that appointment has not been announced yet. Atkinson is not likely to be very responsive to questions about free agents under contract with other teams.
The Nets were the first NBA team to fill a coaching vacancy this summer with four teams still looking at candidates. The Knicks, Grizzlies, Pacers and Rockets are still without a head coach.
