Brian Lewis reports that Tommy Sheppard, Wizards senior vice president of basketball operations, is yet another candidate for the Nets open GM position. Sheppard is No. 2 in the Wizards front office, behind Ernie Grunfeld.
Lewis reports that the Nets have asked permission to talk with Sheppard, who's an NBA lifer with 21 years in the league, the last 12 with Washington. Previously, he had worked with the Nuggets in mostly a public relations capacity. In Washington, his responsibilities salary cap management, negotiations, draft preparation and talent evaluation of collegiate athletes and professionals, both domestically and abroad, among other things.
According to Lewis, Sheppard has been on several teams’ shortlists recently, with Memphis denied permission to talk to him two years ago.
He joins Bryan Colangelo, former Executive of the Year in Phoenix and Denver, Danny Ferry, former GM in Atlanta and two assistant GM's, Arturas Karnisovas of Denver and Gersson Rosas of Houston as potential replacements for Billy King. King was "reassigned" last month. His assistant, Frank Zanin, has assumed some of his responsibilities.
There may very well be other candidates beside those five. There's no timetable for a GM to be named. A search for a head coach is likely to begin only after a GM is chosen
