Brooklyn Nets waive four, cut roster down to 16 players

NBA: Preseason-Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Brooklyn Nets announced that they have waived four players, cutting the roster down from 20 to 16. Those players are Beau Beech, Chase Budinger, Jorge Gutierrez and Egidijus Mockevicius.

Yogi Ferrell remains with the club. It's anticipated the Beech and Mockevicius will join the Long Island Nets. Both have small guarantees.

No real surprises here, as the Nets needed to cut five players before the start of the season, and none of the aforementioned players seemed to have factored into their future plans.

Beech played in just 8 minutes through the first 5 preseason games. While he was certainly a fan favorite, he wasn’t able to crack the preseason rotation. Mockevicius also played just 9 minutes of action, in one game.

Gutierrez played in three games, averaging just over 9 minutes per game, while Budinger played in four games, averaging 10.4 minutes per.

Kenny Atkinson didn’t like what he had to do.

“It’s the hardest part of the job, because I’ve been with those guys since summer league,’’ Atkinson said. “Beau and Iggy. And I thought Chase did a heck of a job. He’s an NBA player. We had all our roster spots, 15 guys under contract, and I thought he did a really good job, all those guys. So for me, first-time head coach, first time doing it, it’s not easy. … Those guys put in a lot of work.”

The Nets now have to cut their roster down to 15 before the start of the season. They have one preseason game remaining, which is this Thursday, at home, against the New York Knicks.
