Greivis Vasquez progressing early in training camp

NBA: Brooklyn Nets-Media Day Nicole Sweet-USA TODAY Sports

Sean Marks was non-committal when discussing the status of Greivis Vasquez at the preseason press conference a little less than two weeks ago. Vasquez, who had surgery on his ankle last season, was sidelined for 59 games.

As we wrote last Tuesday…

Marks was only slightly more optimistic, saying the 6'6" back-up point guard from Venezuela is coming along but is unlikely to be playing big minutes early." He also indicated that rookie Isaiah Whitehead would be getting some burn at the one as well.

Things sound a little more optimistic in the early goings of training camp from both Vasquez himself and coach Kenny Atkinson.

After three days, he’s practicing in full.

Obviously it’s crucial if Vasquez is healthy. Aside from Lin and Vasquez, the Nets point guard rotation is young and inexperienced. Not to mention, Atkinson may scheme lineups with Vasquez and Lin, similar to his Lin’s time in Charlotte when he and Kemba Walker would split the backcourt. Vasquez can split the backcourt with other point guards (i.e. Kyle Lowry) in Toronto.

The former Maryland Terp is on a one-year, $5 million deal with the Nets. We’re just five days away from the first preseason game, and less than a month away from the October 26 opener in Boston.
