As we noted in the Off-Season Report, players started gathering in East Rutherford last week, getting ready for informal workouts that usually start around now and continue until the start of training camp later in the month. NBA coaches (reportedly) can't direct any scrimmages but can observe.
Sometimes, players from other teams who live in New York will join in. A couple of years ago, Mike Dunleavy Jr. worked out with the Nets. Also, players who the Nets might sign to camp contracts can be seen around the fringes of the gym.
In the interim, there will be a lot of decisions to be made, on player guarantees, on the structure of ownership, on whether to keep or sign players. Two years ago, the Nets signed four players to camp invites after September 1. Last year, two made it.
And of course two of the Nets will be playing in Eurobasket which starts next weekend. It's entirely possible that both Andrea Bargnani of Italy and Bojan Bogdanovic of Croatia will be playing late in September.
We take this D&C into the regular season.
September 1 -- Markel Brown gets another $200,000 on his guarantee, bringing his total to $350,000.
September 5 - Eurobasket begins in France, Croatia, Germany and Latvia. Both Croatia and Italy have solid teams and both want to finish in the top two. That's enough to get an automatic invitation to the Rio de Janiero Olympics a year from now.
September 8 -- New deadline for Bruce Ratner and Forest City Enterprises to resolve their debt issues with Mikhail Prokhorov. FCE, Ratner's parent company, and ONEXIM, Prokhorov's, may also be in talks for a larger deal, in which Prokhorov would gain full control of the Nets and Barclays Center.
September 20 -- Eurobasket finals in Lille, France. Only a week or so before the Nets open camp.
September 28 -- Media Day, at Barclays Center, the first official gathering for the new roster.
September 29 -- Brown's salary is fully guaranteed for the season at $845,000.
October 1 -- Training camp opens, but not at the new $45 million HSS Training facility on 39th Street in the Industry City section of Brooklyn. It won't be ready until February around the time of the All-Star Break. So will it be held in New Jersey ... or will they go back to Duke like they did two years ago? Teams can bring as many as 20 players to camp. The last two years, the Nets have invited 19 and 17 players. The Nets currently have 17 players on their roster.
October 5 -- First preseason game, Nets vs. Fenerbahce Ulker of Istanbul. Bojan Bogdanovic vs. Bogdan Bogdanovic, 7:30 p.m.
October 8 -- Nets vs. Pistons preseason game in Detroit, 7:30 p.m.
October 10 -- Nets vs. 76ers preseason game in Albany, NY, 3:00 p.m.
October 14 -- Nets vs. Celtics preseason game at Barclays Center, 7:30 p.m.
October 18 -- Nets vs. 76ers preseason game at Barclays Center, 1:00 p.m.
October 19 -- Nets vs. Celtics preseason game at TD Garden, 7:30 p.m.
October 24 -- The Nets have a trade exception for $1,120,920 they received for sending Marquis Teague to the 76ers on October 25 of last year. The trade exception will expire if it isn’t used before Oct. 24, 2015.
October 26 -- Roster cutdown day. NBA teams must get down to 15. Normally, at least one cut is made prior to cutdown day.
October 28 -- Opening Night, Nets vs. Bulls at Barclays Center, 7:30 p.m.
-- If they're still on the roster ... Quincy Miller receives a guaranteed $100,000 bringing his total to $150,000; Ryan Boatright receives $125,000, bringing his total to $200,000; and Willie Reed's deal becomes fully guaranteed at $947,000.
October 30 -- Nets vs. Spurs at ATT Center, San Antonio. It will be the Spurs home opener! 8:30 p.m.
October 31 -- Nets vs. Grizzlies, FedEx Forum, Memphis, 8:00 p.m.
-- Nets must decide on Sergey Karasev's fourth year option, at $2.5 million. Decision likely to be made before the deadline.
November 1 -- If he's still on the team, Donald Sloan gets $200,000 guarantee. If cut before this, he receives $50,000.
November 2 -- Nets vs. Bucks, Barclays Center, 7:30 p.m. The return of Sean Sweeney.
November 15 -- If he's still on the team, Quincy Miller gets an additional $125,000 guarantee, giving him a grand total of $275,000.
December 12 -- Two trade exceptions, including the Nets biggest one expire. They are the $3,326,235 TE acquired in the Andrei Kirilenko trade and the $816,482 TE acquired in the Jorge Gutierrez trade. For trade purposes, another $100,000 can be added to any TE's value. TE's cannot be combined, but under certain circumstances can be used to facilitate multi-player, multi-team deals.
December 15 -- All free agents signed during the off-season other than Brook Lopez can be traded.
January 10 -- All partially guaranteed contracts get fully guaranteed.
January 15 -- Brook Lopez and his max deal can be traded. NOT likely
