Hassan Whiteside has been suspended for one game, the NBA announced Tuesday afternoon in a press release. How is this relevant to the Brooklyn Nets? For one, the Heat are in the mix of a heated race for the final two spots in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but more importantly, Whiteside will have to sit out against the Nets on Wednesday night in Miami due to the suspension.
Whiteside was suspended for "elbowing Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk in the back of the neck," the press release said. Whiteside has been instrumental to the Heat's success this season, averaging nearly 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding in more than two blocks per game. Whiteside was signed by Miami during the season and has been this year's success story in the league.
This is a huge boost for the Nets, who have been killed on the glass of late and don't feature many prominent rebounders. With every game being meaningful at this point in the season, the Nets are getting a leg up on Wednesday's opponent.
