Kevin Garnett's contract runs out at the end of this season. He has already achieved enough to be considered among the greatest power forwards, indeed among the greatest players, in NBA history. And with this season, he has a chance to add to his career achievements, particularly with Lionel Hollins indicating he won't be following Jason Kidd's rigid management of KG's minutes.
He is already...
--Only player in NBA history to reach at least 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 5,000 assists, 1,500 steals and 1,500 blocks in his career
--Only player in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists per game for 6 consecutive seasons (1999–2000—2004–05)
--Only player in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game for 9 consecutive seasons (1998–99—2006–07)
This season, he has a chance to add more milestones, even with limited minutes.
--When he next steps on the court, It will be his 20th season in the NBA, making his only the fourth player to achieve that, joining Robert Parrish and Kevin Willis, with 21 seasons and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with 20. Eight other players made it to 19, but stopped short of 20.
--If he can play 48 games, he will have played 1,425 career games, fifth all-time, surpassing along the way Reggie Miller and Jason Kidd.
--If he can play 1,090 minutes, slightly less than last season, he will become the fifth player to surpass 50,000 career minutes joining Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kidd and Elvin Hayes. If he plays 1,203 minutes, he will move past Hayes and Kidd into third place all time. Along with Abdul-Jabbar and Malone, he will join the 50,000 minute, 25,000 point, 10,000 rebound club.
--Already 10th all-time in rebounds, he can move into eighth place if he can match last season's rebound total, 358. .If he can garner 515, he will move into seventh. Tim Duncan is 261 behind him.
--And if he can grab 352 defensive rebounds, he would end the season --and perhaps his career-- as the NBA's leading defensive rebounder, more than Malone. He needs 82 offensive rebounds to move into 20th place all time in that category..
There are less achievable milestones. He would have to score more than 1,100 points to reach the top 10 in scoring, assuming Dirk Nowitzki, now No. 10, doesn't score. Another 72 blocks would move him into the top 15 in career blocks.
Still, assuming this is it for KG, there may be more than a few game stoppages this season.
