Jorge Gutierrez came off the bench for Mexico after missing a game with a minor shoulder injury and led the red, white and green to a 75-65 win over Puerto Rico in the FIBA CentroBasket tournament. The win earned Mexico a trip to the championship round in Tepic, Mexico.
Gutierrez scored 24 points in 30 minutes. Fifteen times, the 6'3" point guard went to the line, making all but one of his shots. He added five rebounds, five assists and two steals. J.J. Barea of Minnesota led Puerto Rico with 24 as well.
Meanwhile, 5,000 miles away in Trieste, Italy, Mirza Teletovic scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-12 overall and 2-of-5 from deep as Canada beat Bosnia with a late rush, 84-66. Teletovic led Bosnia while three NBA players, Cory Joseph of San Antonio (16) Kelly Olynyk of Boston (15); and Andrew Nicholson of Orlando (13) scored in double figures for Canada.
Teletovic uploaded a video of him enjoying the weather in the Adriatic port city on Monday ... by taking a plunge in the local harbor.
Mexico plays Cuba in the semi-finals Wednesday night. A win puts them into the championship game Thursday night.
The next Net player to take the court will be Bojan Bogdanovic on Friday in France, where Croatia will participate in a friendly tournament with the host nation, Serbia and Greece..Croatia will play France on Friday, Serbia on Saturday and Greece on Sunday. Also, Lionel Hollins and Andrei Kirilenko will be in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday to kick off Basketball Without Borders Africa.
