Jorge Gutierrez scored only eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, handed out only two assists and played intermittently because of foul trouble in Slovenia's blowout 89-68 win over Mexico in Gran Canaria Sunday, leaving the Mexican national team with an 0-2 record in Group D play.
Gutierrez, who hurt his shoulder two weeks ago, has been up-and-down since. He played well against Lithuania Saturday, scoring 13 points against the medal contenders, but got into early foul trouble against Slovenia, who played an efficient game against the Mexicans. Gutierrez faced off against a Slovenian backcourt of Goran and Zoran Dragic. Zoran, the younger Dragic brother, finished with 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting, while the Suns' Goran had 18 to go with six assists. Free agent center Gustavo Ayon led Mexico with 23 points and three rebounds.
Mexico faces African powerhouse Angola at 6:30 a.m. ET Monday.
