Paul Pierce poker skills on display at World Series of Poker

Elsa

Paul Pierce is highly competitive. Highly competitive and not just about basketball.

Pierce is participating in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and as of 5 p.m. Saturday, he was in the top 10 of the WSOP's $10,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha championship. It's an event which, as CardPlayer.com notes, "always draws the best of the best." Nearly 400 players started out. Fewer than 150 had made it as far as Pierce.

The Nets small forward apparently honed his skills on team planes criss-crossing the country. Asked who he thought would be the easier marks, his old teammates on the Celtics or his new teammates on the Nets, Pierce at first paused, then smiled and said, "I got some new people to feed on. So watch out when I get there."

It was Pierce's first comment of any kind about his new team.
