Staten Island's Dami Sapara among first to workout

College of the Ozarks

The Nets haven't disclosed who will be working out for them next week, but the agent for one of Staten Island's Dami Sapara, says he will be there Tuesday, when workouts start. Sapara, a hyper-athletic 6'6" point guard, played most recently for NAIA Division II College of the Ozarks.

Sapara is the latest in a string of local products to be invited to the Nets workouts, joining Lamont Jones, a Queens product who played for Iona, and Creighton big man Gregory Echenique, who played high school ball at St. Benedict's in Newark. They;ve got individual workouts scheduled later in the month. The Nets also arranged an invite for Brooklynite and Farmingdale State product A.J. Matthews to their Group Workout last month.

It's unlikely any of them will be drafted but every workout needs fillers. Only so many players are willing to come in when you have one pick, at #22. Moreover, it helps the local products get noticed for possible summer league, training camp and European opportunities. Doesn't hurt the Nets relationship with the agent either.

“Hopefully, he can parlay this into a couple more workouts and get in the mix,” his agent, B.J. Bass told SNY.tv. “He wont be drafted because no one needs to draft him, but I think summer league is the goal. Right now, let’s just get the kid on the radar.

In Sapara's case, Bass says he has a relationship with Assistant GM Bobby Marks that helped his client get in the door, writes Josh Newman. Bass also has told people he really wants to play for the Nets.
