He has not said so directly, but Derrel Johnson of SNY Nets, picking through his recent comments, thinks Patrick Ewing would like a courtesy call from Billy King about the Nets coaching vacancy.
Johnson quotes Ewing on Friday's Mike and Mike Show. When asked Friday why he hasn't gotten an offer to be a head coach, Ewing seemed mystified.
"Your guess is as good as mine," Ewing responded. "You know what? I’m putting in the work. I’ve been an assistant coach for nine, 10 years. I’m trying to learn my craft, become better at it. I really don’t know. All I can do is just continue to work, continue to knock on doors. Hopefully that one team will decide to give me an opportunity and give me the opportunity to be successful or to fail."
When it appeared Jeff Van Gundy was a candidate for the Nets job, there were rumors he'd bring Ewing in to mentor Brook Lopez, as he did with Yao Ming and his brother did with Dwight Howard. When Stan Van Gundy was dropped by the Magic, so was Ewing. He didn't work last season.
