Nets waive Gutierrez, Johnson, Thomas

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Nets waived three camp invites Saturday, setting their Opening Night roster at 15. Jorge Gutierrez, Chris Johnson, and Adonis Thomas were all let go. Of the three, Johnson had the most impressive showing, averaging 5.6 points and 2.0 boards. He scored 21 points vs. Philly, hitting five three pointers.  Gutierrez averaged 1.8 points and three rebounds. Thomas never joined the Nets.

Under the CBA, the Armor retains the exclusive D-League rights to the last three players cut by the Nets unless they're already held by another team. However, the Canton Charge still hold the rights to Gutierrez and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers still hold the rights to Johnson, both of whom played in the D-League last season. The Armor could trade for their rights if they want.

Thomas, a 6'7" former high school all-American and two-time FIBA world champion as a 16 and 17 year old, went undrafted in June and was picked up so he could sign with the Armor.

Similarly, the Armor retain the rights to 6'11" Willie Reed, cut Saturday by Memphis. The Nets came close to calling Reed up last season. It's uncertain if Reed wants to return to the D-League.
