Toko Shengelia Explodes in Springfield, Leads Armor to Big Win

Springfield Armor

After opening his D-League career last month with a triple-double, Toko Shengelia returned to Springfield Thursday night to tie a franchise single-game scoring mark with 39 points on 17-of-21 shooting. He added 18 rebounds, six assists and three steals to his stat-stuffing performance.

Shengelia was not alone in the 123-115 victory of the East-leading Maine Red Claws. Tyshawn Taylor finished with 21 points and 11 assists. Nets training camp invite James Mays finished with 21 points as well. Willie Reed, the 6'10" power forward the Armor picked up in the draft, had 17 points and former Net Ben Uzoh 16. As a team, the Armor set a new single-game franchise record for made field goals (50) and new single-game season-highs for field goal percentage (55.6%) and assists (31).

But Shengelia was the story. After the Armor fell behind 24-9 in the first quarter, with the 6'9" forward scoring only two points, he led them to a two-point halftime lead, then took off in the second half, scoring 25 in the final two quarters. Shengelia is now averaging 30 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists over two games of D-League action. He and Taylor are expected to spend the week in Springfield, going up against the Santa Cruz Warriors Saturday and the Red Claws again Sunday.
