Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that the Nets will work out Josh Childress and Dominic McGuire early next week as they move to fill their last off-season need: a back up small forward.
Childress, 29, was amnestied by the Suns in July with $21 Million remaining on his deal. McGuire, 26, played last for the Warriors. Neither would receive any more than a non-guaranteed one-year offer. The Nets had hoped Donte Greene would back up Gerald Wallace, but he suffered a severe ankle injury.
Neither averaged more than three points per game last season. Childress was a rising star with the Hawks in 2008 when he decided to play for Olympiacos in Greece. After two ultimately disappointing seasons in Europe, he returned to the NBA, signing a five-year, $33.5 million deal. He again disappointed in Phoenix, averaging 2.9 points, and was amnestied.
McGuire has played for four NBA teams, never averaging more than 4.5 points but having a good defensive "glue game" as one analyst put it.. Last season, he played in 64 games, and averaged 3.5 points and 3.8 rebounds.
