The Nets of course will be the biggest winner when Barclays Center opens in September, but another basketball program, the LIU Blackbirds, are right behind him. The Blackbirds will play two of the first games at the billion dollar arena next season, a big lift for the rising Division I program a subway stop away.
As previously announced, LIU - Morehead State will be the undercard when John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats face the Maryland Terrapins at Barclays November 9. Then, on December 22, the Blackbirds will face another local program on the rise, Seton Hall. Also, Barclays will be the venue for an all-Brooklyn game between LIU and St Francis, whose campus is a few blocks away in Brooklyn Heights. It's all part of a college hoops program that will feature both top colleges as well as locals.
