Early today, Arnie Spanier, a Dallas radio host engaged Denise Smith, Deron Williams' mom, in a long and, by the radio station's own admission, bizarre conversation. For more than 10 minutes, Ms. Smith had some fun, deflecting questions aimed at getting her to admit her son's headed to the Mavs. She laughed off most of them but did say, emphatically, that he son "likes New Jersey" and one reason is the anonymity living in New York offers. She admitted she'd like to see the grandkids.
But the best back-and-forth came when Spanier said, "Stephen A. Smith says the whole world knows" D-Will is going to the Mavs. When Ms. Smith responded with an "ugh!", Spanier asked, "So he's full of crap?" "Mmm-hmm" came the reply, causing Spanier's co-host to shout, "I love her!"
Later in Orlando, Williams talked about the rumors. "My mom called me and asked if I was going to be traded to Dallas," he said, shaking his head with exasperation. "I told her she shouldn’t believe Stephen A. Smith," he said.
