Ken Berger is one busy reporter. After writing earlier Sunday about possible revisions in the Carmelo Anthony deal, Berger adds to the literature of the 'Melo Drama with some background on last week's events...including two high-level meetings in New York, one involving 'Melo pal and Net investor Jay-Z.
Berger notes that while Masai Ujiri couldn't get a meeting with Anthony, he and Josh Kroenke spent time in New York last week meeting with Billy King. Moreover, he reports Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) met with World Wide Wes (aka William Wesley), an Anthony advisor, also in New York.
"In the past 72 hours, CBSSports.com has learned. Wesley, long an unofficial master of NBA maneuverings who is now a full-fledged CAA agent, sat down last week in New York with Nets minority owner Jay-Z in an effort to pave the way for Anthony’s arrival, a person with direct knowledge of the meeting said."
Bottom line: Berger quotes a person involved in negotiations as saying a deal is likely to go down in the next 24-48 hours. Moreover, says Berger, Wesley is threatening to embarrass Nuggets ownership by holding Anthony out of the team's Media Day Monday. "If Melo doesn’t show," said one person connected to the trade negotiations, "it’s disaster mode for them."
