After 28 seasons, the Nets play their last game at the Meadowlands Monday vs. the Bobcats. After two years at Newark's Prudential Center, the Nets expect to become the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. As part of the Newark lease agreement, the franchise agreed not to thwart any effort to put a new team in New Jersey's largest city.
Dave D'Alessandro asked David Stern how realistic is a new New Jersey team. Stern wouldn't say no, but didn't exactly hold out hope. As Dave D notes, "If you need anyone to translate the subtext, ask yourself this: How are those three hockey teams doing in roughly the same market? Analysis over."
Perhaps a new team could be named the New Jersey Americans, the franchise's original name--and one that might work in countering a certain Russian-owned team.
