The Nets really don't know much (anything?) about Maccabi Haifa, but they're enthused about getting started. They're say they're ready and they're healthy. Terrence Williams, who went down with a contusion Thursday, practiced Saturday and will play Sunday. Troy Murphy (groin strain) saw his first contact Saturday but will sit another day. Only undrafted rookie Brian Zoubek (back) looks like he'll be down for a while. Making matters worse, Avery Johnson says Johan Petro has been a big surprise. Johnson says he hopes to have players doing rotation minutes by the third or fourth preseason game.
For the Nets, there'll be some milestones, even if it's preseason. Johnson returns to coaching. Twelve players will be wearing a Nets uniform for the first time, including four rookies, led by top draft choice Derrick Favors and five free agent pick-ups: Petro, Travis Outlaw, Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow and Joe Smith. One player to watch on Maccabi is rookie Sylven Landesberg, a Queens native who played for Virginia last year. Jeff Rosen, Haifa owner and a Jersey native, rooted for the Nets as a kid.
