When Dick Bavetta throws up the ball for the opening tap Wednesday night at the Continental Airlines Arena, he will be making NBA history. Bavetta, the stick figure ref with the dramatic flair and almost infallible whistle, will be officiating his 2,135th game, eclipsing Jake O'Donnell's record for most regular-season appearances in league history. Bavetta has never missed an assignment although some say he has missed a few calls. (Not us, of course).
