Others have even suggested that Bruce Ratner is using the Nets to attract black support for the $4.5 billion project because African-Americans so love basketball. Supporters have said too much attention is paid to criticism by "white liberals". And so it goes. As the New York Times reports, the debate over the project has often been tinged by race.
