Nets May Have Retained Drejer's Rights

TV-Sporten in Denmark is reporting that before Christian Drejer signed with Virtus Bologna in the Italian League, the Nets invited him to their training camp. That would seem to indicate that the Nets had offered the 6' 9" swingman a contract, which they must do by September 5 to retain his draft rights. The Nets don't have to offer Drejer a guaranteed contract to meet the requirements laid out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Nor does Drejer have to accept the contract. They can offer him a non-guaranteed contract, a partially guaranteed contract or a fully guaranteed contract to meet the requirements. It's the smart move even after his poor showing in Barcelona and the Vegas Summer League. He is talented and if he improves in Italy, the Nets either have themselves a good player or another tradeable asset...and it costs them nothing.
