It actually starts tonight at Barry Farms at 7:30 with a game between the Goodman League and Team Nike. The USA men's and women's olympic basketball teams will be a part of this event. Players from the two teams will be at the Armory tomorrow to give clinics, etc. The men's team will have an open practice tomorrow at the Armory and Sunday at GWU. The women's team will practice at American University over the weekend. Obviously, the capstone event of it all is the Monday, July 16 game against Brazil starting at 5:30 PM when the women's basketball team plays Brazil. 30 minutes after that game, the men's teams will play which we anticipate will be at 8 PM in our house. Our own Nene will play for Brazil.
Very cool news. Big congrats to Montrezl. Harrell, who signed with the Cardinals last week, and his USA teammates will compete in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will be played June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. The U.S. team will continue to train through June 11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and will depart June 12 for the South American nation.
The US team was defeated by Argentina 58-55 in their first contest of the Pan Am Games today. UConn verbal commit Breanna Stewart set a Pan Am Games record of 21 rebounds, to go along with a team-high 18 points and four blocks in the loss. Katelan Redmon (Gonzaga) added 16 points and 8 rebounds to finish as the only other American in double-digit scoring. Noticeably absent from the box score (at least to me) were Kevi Luper (Oral Roberts) and April Sykes (Rutgers). The US faces Puerto Rico tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET and finishes up preliminary pool play Sunday at 9 p.m. ET against host Mexico.
Swin Cash (Seattle Storm), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Brittney Griner (Baylor University), Asjha Jones (Connecticut Sun), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut Sun), Cappie Pondexter (New York Liberty), Sophia Young (San Antonio Silver Stars), Danielle Robinson (San Antonio Silver Stars) will participate in the USA’s first three games of USA Basketball's European tour. Candice Dupree and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) will join the team later this week. For more details, visit the USA Basketball link above.
The big story of the first three games has been USA's offensive performance: while they continued to outshoot opponents by a large margin against France, they also got to the free throw line at the highest rate yet with a free throw rate of 44.44%. While Diana Taurasi put up an impressive line with 15 points, Sue Bird was arguably the statistical MVP with an efficient 9 points on 4-for-4 shooting and 3 steals.
The schedule for the USA Women's Senior National basketball team at the FIBA Worlds on NBA TV. (h/t @BrendaVanLengen) First game on Thursday 9/23 at noon vs. Greece.
Washington Mystics guard Lindsey Harding, Indiana Fever forward Ebony Hoffman, Connecticut Sun guard Renee Montgomery, and New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter were not included in the list of 14. The team must be down to 12 by September 22.
Great read. I didn't know all of this about Robinson. Proving yet again how good and classy he was. Amazing.
Cheryl Miller was named a FIBA Hall of Fame inductee out of 17 other nominees and will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame on September 12th, during the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Called by fellow Naismith HOFer Cynthia Cooper the Greatest Player of All Time, it's just another well earned honor for Cheryl Miller.
Taking over the world, one dunk at a time.
