Will Popeye Do Some Scouting in Africa?

When C.J. Watson arrived Tuesday in South Africa for Basketball Without Borders Africa, he joined former Net Dikembe Mutombo and also assistant coach Popeye Jones for the event which begins Thursday. The big feature of the tour is a camp for the 60 top under-18 players on the continent, selected by FIBA and the NBA. Jones will help run camp and get a first-hand view of the players. You never knew what you'll find. In the decade plus that BWB camps have been run around the world, 21 former campers have been drafted by the NBA.

C.J. Watson To Basketball Without Borders Africa

A South African sports site reports Thursday that C.J. Watson will partake in Basketball Without Borders in Johannesburg, South Africa, next week. Watson will be one of two Nets participating in BWB this year. Marshon Brooks will be part of the first Russian Basketball Without Borders Russia next month. The African program will run August 30 - September 2. In addition to Watson, former Net and NBA ambassador Dikembe Mutombo and current players Thabo Sefolosha, Serge Ibaka, Luc Mbah a Moute, Cole Aldrich, and Luol Deng will travel to Jo-burg.

Hump Spends Time with Big Fan

Lost in all the fanfare of the Nets finale in Newark Monday was a moment that didn't get a lot of publicity, in fact very little. Kris Humphries hosted a suburban Buffalo teen, Kaely Kwitek, who's suffering from stage 4 anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. Kaely's friends set up a Twitter account to help arrange a meeting between the 16-year-old cheerleader and her favorite NBA player. After the meeting at Prudential Center, Humphries tweeted, "Thanks for coming down to our game @Kris4Kaely You were my favorite guest."

Six Nets Players Out and About in North Jersey

Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Sundiata Gaines, and Mehmet Okur will meet students and sign autographs in the Student Center at Montclair State University Tuesday, February 7, from 2:30. to 3:30 p.m. The players, along with the Nets Dancers and team mascot Sly, will be on hand to promote the Nets Foundation Appreciation Scholarship. Later, Johan Petro and Keith Bogans will participate in a karate clinic with 30 kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morris, Bergen, and Passaic counties for the Nets’ "Passport to Fitness" program. The two will be at DoJo Martial Arts, 52 Park Avenue in Rutherford between 4 and 5 p.m.

Nets Developing Code of Conduct for Barclays

At a community meeting this week, a representative of Forest City Ratner said arena management and presumably the Nets are at work on a code of conduct for Barclays Center. Among the possibilities, suggested Jane Marshall, is a cutoff of beer sales earlier than the end of the third quarter, the NBA rule. Local residents note that the Brooklyn arena is more intertwined with a residential neighborhood than any other.

Nets Run Fitness Clinic Saturday at PNY

MarShon Brooks, Johan Petro, Sundiata Gaines, and Larry Owens will participate in NBA FIT Live Healthy Week at the PNY Center in East Rutherford. They will lead a basketball clinic for 100 children ages 8-13 from the Boys & Girls Clubs of New Jersey and Brooklyn.

Nets To Award Three Jersey Scholarships

In recognition of the NETS' 35-year history in New Jersey, the team will award the $35,000 Nets Foundation Appreciation Scholarship to three students from New Jersey who attend an accredited college or university in New Jersey in the 2012-13 school year.

Thanksgiving Memory, Christmas Hope

The Nets are still trying to make things better for those in need, in Newark and in Brooklyn, by sending turkeys and dishing out food at community centers...but without the players. One place they gone on past Thanksgivings, the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Newark, remembers what it was like with the players present. "It was an awesome day," Deacon Gilbert Snead Jr. recalls to Al Iannazzone. "The way they interacted with the community, it was like they were at home." Now, he's hoping the lockout will be over by Christmas so the players can come back.

Kittles Again Works With Nets

Kerry Kittles, Billy King, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Tiki Barber will meet with 250 students from five Newark, high schools Wednesday morning to celebrate physical activity. It's Kittles' third community event with the Nets this summer and his Wikipedia entry reports Kittles also works as "a part-time scout" although the Nets media guide doesn't list him as such.

Humphries Lends Fame to Diabetes Fight

Not a great couple of days for Kris Humphries. The gossip rags are filled with stories about how his new in-laws hate him and a new book claims Kansas basketball players begged their coach not to sign him. But Hump's new fame has proven valuable in the fight against diabetes and kidney disease. He has done a PSA on diabetes prevention for a New York-based treatment center.
