Nets Building Roster, From Bottom Up
The Nets' free agent mini-camp ended Wednesday with Avery Johnson and Billy King professing it was great and that in Johnson's words, there were "two or three players" they liked and in King's words, "we're trying to build a summer league roster" and would be inviting "some of them" to Orlando in July.
Of the 21, most attention was focused on the five former NBA players who were overseas last year and Ben Hansbrough whose ankle injury hurt his chances of being drafted late by the Nets.Listening to Johnson and King, the Nets said particularly nice things about Adam Morrison, Al Thornton, Julian Wright, Jeff Foote and Hilton Armstrong. Foote, the Armor's seven-foot All-D-League center, has already accepted a summer league spot.

Prokhorov Signals Return To Politics
Ten weeks after losing in the Russian presidential election, Mikhail Prokhorov signaled Wednesday that he intended to re-enter the political fray.
In a blog post, the Nets' owner wrote, "Now it is clear what to do next. We begin to act!" He provided no further details, but it was signal he wanted to participate in public life again.
After getting only eight percent of the vote, Prokhorov said he would form a new political party to challenge President Vladimir Putin's United Russia. Then, he suggested a party might not be needed for democratic progress. Now, with this announcement, it appears he is back.

Williams' Preference: Improved Nets
It's that time of year when players are like chess pieces and the masters are the pundits who want to move them around the board, see who checkmates who in the end. The board? The Internet, of course!
In article on the Lakers' future, which like the Knicks we most all fret and worry about, Sam Amick suggests a number of options for Team Buss, including an Andrew Bynum-for-Dwight Howard deal and an unspecified sign-and-trade with the Nets for Deron Williams.
A "source close to Williams" thinks he'd like to play there, but Amick also quotes the same source as saying what D-Will really wants: "Williams' preference, however, is for the Nets to improve the roster sufficiently enough that he can feel good about staying put rather than fear a repeat of this season, when they finished 22-44." Dallas? "There's no longevity there."
Meanwhile, Stefan Bondy tweets that a source tells him that if the Nets knew they were losing Williams to the Lakers, they would prefer cap space to a sign-and-trade with the Lakers for Pau Gasol. That, of course, would make the Lakers' pursuit of D-Will difficult if not impossible since they are capped out for years.

Too Early for Summer League? Nope; How About Trade Talks? Soon
One reason the Nets were the first team to hold a free agent workout this off-season is to get a head-start on the summer league and training camp. In the past, Bobby Marks said recently, the Nets scrambled to fill the summer league roster. Billy King also told NetsDaily he'd give Armor players precedence when the time came to choose.
So far, so good. King said Wednesday that the Nets have invited Marshon Brooks and Jordan Williams along with the Armor's Dennis Horner and Jeff Foote to Orlando for the July 9-13 affair. That doesn't mean other players from this week's mini-camp won't be playing for the Nets. Avery Johnson said the Nets wouldn't be identifying who they like now, but they have some in mind. And of course, there will be draft pick(s).
King also talked about how he understands what Otis Smith is going through and no matter what happens next Wednesday at the Lottery, he sees it as the starting point of trade season.
"What the Lottery does, more than anything, is gives you certainty in what the draft order is," King said. "Because then you can start making calls on who has what picks. Utah may have Golden State's pick, or Golden State may have it. We might have our pick or Portland may have it. We'll find out who has multiple picks. I always look at it as the day that starts the races of the true offseason of player movement and trades being made."

Nets Talking Turkey for Bogdanovic?
A Croatian basketball site reports that the Nets are talking buyout with Bojan Bogdanovic's Turkish team, Fenerbahce. Crobasket offered no details on the reported talks. The Nets can only contribute $525,000 to any buyout package Fener might agree to. Tuesday, there were reports that since Bogdanovic has no "NBA out" in his contract, the whole deal would have to be re-negotiated and Fener might not go along.
Crobasket reports that while Turkish media claim Bogdanovic could sue Fener for "breach of contract," those close to him deny it and say instead that any deal is up to Fener and the Nets. Crobasket also noted that the two positions Bogdanovic plays --shooting guard and small forward-- are "crowded" on the Nets roster.
As to what kind of salary Bogdanovic might command in the NBA, Crobasket pointed to what another European second rounder received recently. Omer Asik, the Bulls seven footer, signed a two-year, $3.8 million contract.

Avery: "We'll Be Much Improved"
Avery Johnson put aside Deron Williams doubts Monday when asked about how he sees the Brooklyn Nets, circa October 2012.
"We feel we’ll have a much improved roster, one that starts with Deron at point guard, and getting a guy like Gerald Wallace back, Brook Lopez … we know there’s still some holes on our roster, but if you look at our roster and Deron is in uniform, and Gerald’s back, Brook’s back, Gerald Green’s back, Morrow, MarShon Brooks, those guys, our roster is significantly better than what we had going into training camp in 2010."
Of course, the Nets were coming off a 12-win season in October 2010 and like Billy King on Monday, Johnson didn't mention Kris Humphries or any power forward. Johnson made his comments after Tuesday's free agent mini-camp. He said two or three guys stood out, but reserved special praise for Jeff Foote, the Armor's seven-foot center, saying "Jeff’s been a stud ... He’s a really good passing big guy, and that’s kind of a lost art right now in the NBA."

Driving To Games? Fuggedaboutit!
Barclays Center presented its revised transportation plan for the arena Tuesday night and the message was simple: don't even think about driving. Indeed, the arena's transportation consultant made it clear: there won't be that much parking available near the arena once you get there -- and it's intentional.
In addition to the disincentives for driving, there will be incentives for taking mass transit, the consultant Sam Schwartz told a skeptical audience in Brooklyn. Among them: empty subway cars and buses at the ready as games exit; additional trains on both the busiest subway lines and the LIRR, where there will be twice as many trains as usual on game nights; even a guarded 400-bike parking lot. What there won't be is the much ballyhooed "NetroCard", a free subway ride for fans. That's been abandoned.
For those who insist on driving, there will be around a thousand spots within a mile of the arena, but only half tha number on the premises, a couple of blocks away. There will be shuttle buses from lots farther away, where fans will be able to reserve and pre-pay for a spot at a discount. Schwartz proudly said ticket information for arena events won't even include driving directions ... although as of Wednesday morning, they were available on the Barclays Center website.
