Nets Continue to Sink With Ugly Loss to Pistons at Prudential Center

Photo

The Nets lost their fourth straight game on Wednesday at the Prudential Center, burying themselves in an 18-point hole against the Pistons that they couldn't quite climb out of.

The Nets led by two early in the second quarter, but the Pistons then went on an 11-0 run, led by 12 at the half, and scored the first six points of the third quarter to go up 18. The Nets cut it down to seven at the end of the third quarter and to one with more than eight minutes to go in the fourth. But they couldn't get over the hump and couldn't get any stops down the stretch, as the Pistons held on for a 99-92 victory, just their second road win of the season.

The Nets shot just 42 percent from the field, while allowing the Pistons to shoot 53 percent. Greg Monroe led six Pistons in double-figures with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Deron Williams shot 6-for-9 from 3-point range, leading the Nets with 34 points and seven assists. Jordan Farmar added 22 points and Kris Humphries grabbed 16 rebounds. Shawne Williams and Anthony Morrow combined to shoot 5-for-24 from the field and and 0-for-10 from 3-point range. Keith Bogans sprained his left ankle in the closing minutes of the fourth.

Bulls Crush Short-Handed Nets For the Second Time

Photo

Though Derrick Rose left early in the second quarter with back spasms, the Chicago Bulls picked up their second easy win over the Nets at the Prudential Center on Monday night.

The Bulls scored seven points before the Nets even took a shot and led by double-figures less than five minutes into the first quarter. The Nets were down by 20 late in the first quarter and by 30 early in the third.

Chicago shot 56 percent from the field and 9-for-15 from 3-point range. They were led by Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng, who combined for 43 points on 17-for-30 from the field. The Nets shot just 41 percent and were led by Deron Williams, who scored 25 points on 8-for-16, also dishing out five assists. Williams was one of nine players in (retro New York Nets) uniform Monday.

Nets Can't Stop Jeremy Lin, Fall to Knicks at the Garden

Photo

The Nets kept both Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire in check at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, but they couldn't stop Jeremy Lin. The back-up point guard went off for a career-high 25 points, leading the Knicks to a 99-92 victory, their fifth straight against the Nets.

The Nets started out hot and led by 12 late in the first quarter. But Lin led a Knicks' comeback in the second, and the Nets lead was just two at the half. The second half was tight throughout, but a 9-2 run put the Knicks up seven with less than four minutes to go and Lin put the game away with countless drives through the Nets' defense.

At game's end, Knick fans chanted, "Jeremy" and the 6'3" Harvard grad was hugged by his teammates

"Our game plan was to help off him and he just started knocking down shots and got confidence and he was relentless taking it to the basket,” said Deron Williams.

The Nets shot just 42 percent from the floor and got outrebounded 48-39. Deron Williams led them with 21 points and 11 assists, but had another poor shooting night. Kris Humprhies finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Jordan Farmar added 19 points off the bench, and Jordan Williams scored a career-high 10 points in 26 minutes.

Morrow's 42 Aren't Enough For Nets Against Timberwolves

Photo

Anthony Morrow played the game of his life on Friday, but he didn't have enough help, as the Nets fell to the Timberwolves, 108-105 at the Prudential Center.

The Nets led by one at the half, and that was the margin midway through the third quarter before the Wolves took control with a 12-0 run. They led by five heading into the fourth, but the Nets came back to take the lead and the game went back and forth in the final period.

A 7-0 run put the Wolves up five in the final minute. Morrow then hit a four-point play to put the Nets within one, but the Wolves made all their free throws and Deron Williams turned the ball over twice in the last 25 seconds, including on the final possession.

Morrow led the Nets with 42 points, shooting 13-for-20 from the field and 8-for-11 from 3-point range. It was the Nets' first 40-point game in three years, since Vince Carter scored 41 in March 2009. Morrow's teamates shot 38 percent. Williams added 12 points and 14 assists, but was only 5-for-18. Jordan Farmar finished with 14 points and seven assists, and Kris Humphries added 15 points and nine rebounds. The Nets dressed only 10 players.

Eight Is Enough As Nets Hang On To Beat Pistons

Photo

Eight healthy Nets were enough to beat Lawrence Franks's Pistons on Wednesday. It got uncomfortable at the end, but the Nets picked up their third home win of the season, a 99-96 victory.

The game was tied after the first quarter, but the Nets outscored the Pistons 26-15 in the second. They led by as many as 12 midway through the third, but the Pistons came all the way back and took a brief lead late in the period. The game was tied midway through the fourth when the Nets took control with a 7-1 run. Then Detroit cut the lead back down to two in the final minute and had a chance to tie or take the lead. After Tayshaun Prince missed a turnaround jumper, Sundiata Gaines hit one of two at the line with 1.8 seconds left, leaving the door open. But Brandon Knight's game-tying three was off the mark (and late).

The Nets shot 48 percent from the field and outrebounded the Pistons 44-31. Deron Williams led the way with 26 points and nine assists, hitting 12 of his 21 shots. Kris Humphries added 18 points and eight rebounds, Jordan Farmar scored 15 points in his first start, and Shelden Williams grabbed 11 boards.

Nets' Late Comeback Falls Short In Indiana

Photo

The shorthanded Nets played well in Indiana on Tuesday, and they showed some fight in coming back from an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter. But the comeback fell short and the Pacers came away with a 106-99 victory...but lost George Hill to an ankle fracture.

The game was tight throughout the first half and tied midway through the third quarter. The Pacers then went on a 12-0 run and eventually led 97-79 with 8:35 to go in the fourth. At that point, Deron Williams and Anthony Morrow led the Nets on a 16-1 run to get within three. But the Nets were unable to secure a critical rebound in the final minute that would have given them a chance to tie, and the Pacers finished them off.

The Nets shot 47 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 19 times and allowed the Pacers to shoot 52 percent. Williams led the Nets with 34 points and seven assists. Morrow scored a season-high 28 points, hitting five of his eight threes. Kris Humphries recorded his ninth double-double.

Hill went down in the third quarter when he fell against Johan Petro's foot.

Nets Return Home And Get Blown Out By Raptors

Photo

The Nets made it clear on Sunday that they aren't quite ready for playoff contention, laying an egg against the Raptors at the Prudential Center. It was Toronto's first win without Andrea Bargnani and Deron Williams' first loss to the Raptors, and it wasn't close.

Toronto led by five at the half and started the third quarter on a 12-2 run to go up 15. The Nets could never put more than one score or stop together in the second half, and Toronto cruised to a 94-73 victory. The Nets shot just 36 percent from the field, while the Raptors shot 52 percent.

Williams led the Nets with 24 points and six assists, but made just eight of his 21 shots. Anthony Morrow added 14 points, but starters DeShawn Stevenson, Kris Humphries and Shelden Williams combined for just five points on 2-for-8 shooting, while MarShon Brooks and Jordan Farmar combined to shoot 6-for-19 off the bench. After being shut down by Stevenson in the first meeting, DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 27 points.

Stevenson re-injured his right knee in the third quarter and said he won't play Tuesday at Indiana.

Shorthanded Nets Handle Cavs For Second Straight Win

Photo

The Nets have their first winning streak of the season thanks to a wire-to-wire, 99-96 victory in Cleveland on Friday night.

The Nets have now won three of their last four and four of the last six, the only losses over that stretch coming at the hands of the Bulls and Thunder.

The Nets made seven of their first 10 shots and led 30-20 after the first quarter. The second period was much uglier, but they still led by 10 at halftime. They went up by as many as 16 in the third and by 17 midway through the fourth. The Cavs made a late run to get within four with 16 seconds left, but they never got a chance to tie.

The Nets shot 46 percent from the field and 11-for-28 from 3-point range, turning the ball over just 14 times. Deron Williams led the way once again, scoring 27 points and dishing out 10 assists, hitting five of his nine threes. Anthony Morrow added 22 points and Kris Humphries recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
