Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

2010 NBA Draft

How a "Holler" Gave Us Kris & Kim

In their first television interview Tuesday, Kris Humphries and the missus didn't mention NBA free agency or the lockout, but he did provide details on how the two met nearly a year ago.

"I was playing for New Jersey last year," he told Jay Leno (implying that's in the past?).  While watching the Heat game on Halloween, Kardashian took an interest in him, he said. She then interjected that a friend told her that she knew one of Humphries' teammates, Jordan Farmar.

"So the next day," Humphries continued. "My teammate comes up to me and says, 'Am I your man, am I your man?' ' Guess who wants to holler at you? He actually used the word, 'holler'! 'Kim Kardashian'!"

And how did the Nets then third string power forward respond? "Uh, I dont know," he recalled saying, quickly adding "I didn't know much about her. I didn't know know how nice she is. Then I found out she was down to earth ...and I fell in love with her (kisses wife)."  Awww!  The couple will appear again at 4 p.m. Wednesday on "Ellen".

Zoubek, Uzoh Among Likely Keepers

DIME's Daniel Marks writes that Brian Zoubek and Ben Uzoh are among the 10 undrafted players likely to make an NBA roster this fall...but not necessarily with Nets

Shouldn't be much of a surprise: the two are among only three undrafted players with partially guaranteed deals.

Zoubek, who DIME ranks fifth, will wind up somewhere because he was "one of the most efficient rebounders in all of college basketball last season", and rebounding translates to the NBA level. As for Uzoh, he's got "great size for a point guard and also possesses the ability to knock down the three".

Jeremy Lin, the Harvard point guard, is viewed as the most likely to make an NBA roster, following his strong summer league.  Lin is likely to sign a partially guaranteed deal this week with his hometown Warriors for more than $200,000.

Nets Tried to Buy Pick To Take Tiny Gallon

The Racine (WI) Journal Times reports, at the bottom of a column on the Bucks' off season, that the Nets tried to buy a pick in the second round to take Tiny Gallon, the 6'10", 320-pound Oklahoma PF.

"The Nets were hoping the Bucks didn't take Gallon with the 47th overall pick," reports Gary Woefel. "They had a deal in place with Miami to acquire the 48th pick."  However, the Bucks beat the Nets to Gallon and took him at #47.

The Nets were known to be interested in Gallon who dropped precipitously on Draft Night. In the Las Vegas Summer League, Gallon averaged 6.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg but shot only 36.8%.

The Value of Favors and Loyalty

Derrick Favors has been called a "chip" by his general manager...and indeed, he's been a popular topic when Rod Thorn picks up the phone.  On Draft Day, there were reports the Pacers wanted him and Devin Harris for Danny Granger.  Chad Ford reports in an ESPN chat Friday that the Blazers dangled LaMarcus Aldridge for him and Harris that same night.  Before the draft, word was the Nets were willing to deal the #3 pick and Harris to the Hornets for Chris Paul.

But the Nets haven't bitten yet and one team insider says it's "highly likely" the 18-year-old will be on the opening night roster in Newark. That's a good thing for Favors.  As SLAM reports, Favors may be young but he is very, very loyal and appreciates the same in others.  Same with hard work.  There are those who do not expect much from him this season. He's not among them.

Did the Nets Get the Most NBA-Ready Rookie?

Thursday is not only the first day of free agency.  It's the first scrimmage for Derrick Favors and Damion James as Nets. They have spent a lot of time at area ball parks however. The two first round picks and Terrence Williams along with a host of hopefuls gathered at the PNY Center this morning for a few days of training before the Summer League...with Favors supplying a hyper athletic dunk attempt that wowed those in attendance.

And there was also good news for the Nets in a stat geek's analysis of last week's draft. A couple of stats geeks at the respected Wages of Wins used their "Win Score" metric to determine which draftee was most likely to succeed in the NBA.  Armed with their analysis, which they say is time-tested, they argue it's Damion James!

Win Score is "a simplified version of Wins Produced, built around the notion that points, rebounds, steals, field goal attempts, and turnovers have – in absolute terms – the same impact on wins."  NBA rookies have an average PAWS of about 10 entering the league.  James' is 15.8, just ahead of DeMarcus Cousins.  Favors finished 18th. Shawn Ryan and David Berri point out what Win Score is not..."a crystal ball".

Favors, James Promise Nets Quick Rewards

Lost in the news about the Yi Jianlian trade, Rod Thorn's departure and impending free agency travel was the stated purpose of Tuesday's press conference at the PNY Center, introduction of the Nets two rookies, 6'10" PF Derrick Favors and 6'8" SF Damion James

Both promised quick rewards for the Nets.  Favors denied he is a work in progress and said he can help with defense and rebounds.

"I can contribute right away with my defense and rebounding. My offense, right now there's some work I have to do to compete in the NBA," said the draft's No. 3 pick.

Avery Johnson thinks James can be a defensive stopper and the Texas senior wants people to know he's already had some experience defending a top NBA offensive talent.

"I’ve guarded possibly one of the top three players in the NBA every summer, Kevin Durant," James said of a UT teammate he says is like a brother to him. "With that being said, he plays like a guard but he can post. So I can take on the challenge."

Favors Wows Johnson, But Thorn Non-Commital about His Future

In separate interviews with WFAN's Evan Roberts and Mike Francesa, Avery Johnson and Rod Thorn talked about Derrick Favors' potential...both as a player and a trade chip.

Johnson compared Favors to a smaller Dwight Howard and a younger Kevin Garnett.  He has the potential, said the coach, to be "a perennial All-Star" who "could have the greatest impact of any player" taken in this year's draft.

Thorn was less effusive but called Favors "the player who I think could help our team most in the long run". He also acknowledged Favors could be a "chip" in free agency.  Thorn even admitted to Francesa that it's possible, but not likely, that neither Favors nor Damion James will ever play a game for the Nets.

Johnson did say the signing of a veteran PF could actually help Favors' development and also asked for time to evaluate Yi Jianlian. Speaking about Damion James, the coach and GM said the Nets hoped he would drop and said a couple of teams had him #12 and #14 on their boards, mentioning the Grizzlies in particular.  Calling him "tough, rugged kid" and "hard-nosed" the two made it clear that James will play the small forward for the Nets...and play defense.

As for free agency, Johnson reiterated the global nature of the Nets recruiting plan.  He admitted that there is concern about the Knicks and Bulls having more cap room, but added, "We're not done yet ...  Rod can get very creative."

CDR Deal Official

The Nets announced Friday that they have traded Chris Douglas-Roberts to the Milwaukee Bucks for a second round pick in 2012.  The pick is actually the Bulls pick that was sent to the Bucks in the John Salmons trade.  As a Bulls pick, it's likely to be even less valuable than the Bucks pick. CDR bid farewell to fans...via Twitter, of course.

Earlier today, a writer for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speculated that the Bucks might be sending James Jordan's draft rights to the Nets in the deal.  That proved erroneous.  The Bucks sold Jordan's rights to the Knicks for $1 million on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Al Iannazzone summarizes what was going on at Nets headquarters over the last two days, including draft and trade discussions, mostly centered on Yi Jianlian; as well as a visit from Mikhail Prokhorov and Avery Johnson's job interview.
