In my opinion the Brooklyn Nets should bring in either Jerry Sloan - Brian Shaw.

Jerry Sloan: The strengths he posses is that he would bring a really good system to this team with great plays, i dont now much more about this coach because i havint seen him coach, but for what i have seen on youtube with the utah jazz making the Nba Finals with Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer i really think he brings much more to the table then just a system.

Brian Shaw: From what i have seen in the playoffs with the Pacers Defense I really think this asistant coach can be our key piece for winning a championship, we all know the assistant coach is mainly in charge for creating a team plan on defending the other team, another skill this coach has is player development, ive seen this skill by watching how Paul George and Roy Hibbert are reaching their true potential under Brian Shaw, having Shaw as a coach would develop players like Marshon Brooks - Mirza Teletovic - Toko Shengelia and making them reach their true potential.

In my opinion the Brooklyn Nets should bring in either Jerry Sloan - Brian Shaw.

Bring back the man that first made the Nets relevant AKA Byron Scott

Rumor has it that Scott Skiles is the front man for the Nets job, but that would simply be a mistake on all ends of the spectrum. Skiles would be the beginning to our downfall as an organization. The Nets need a motivator, someone who brings the best out of our players, and Skiles is the complete antithesis of that. I'm sorry to go to an extreme like this, but I put Skiles in a league with that of former Rutgers coach Mike Rice. The two are simply hot heads who think that motivation comes in the form of showing your wrath over their players as opposed to facilitating greatness. The fact that Skiles had one good NBA game and holds the record for most assists in a game gives him a sense of entitlement, and that is definitely not who we want running our team. He simply is not a winner and he never will be. He hasn't earned the right to coach our team.

On the other side of things is Byron Scott. The former coach who led us to back-to-back NBA Finals appearances and was thrown under the bus when he couldn't lead a broken Nets team further in the playoffs. Scott was a great coach who drew up great plays and brought the best out of his players. He made players like Aaron Williams AKA the A-Train, and Lucious Harris look like all-stars. He also was the back bone behind our original big three - K-Mart, JKidd, and RJ. The Nets used to ball out hard, showing heart on the court and it was Scott who made this happen.

While he couldn't take us past GP's Spurs or past the Shaq & Kobe dominant Lakers in the Finals, he made us by far the best team in the eastern conference during those years. Byron Scott understands the game and draws up great plays at the perfect time. I'll never forget the game winning out of bounce plays he used to draw up between JKidd and K-Mart. The dude can simply coach and we need him back running our team. As a former role player who has won multiple championships, he understands that it is the little things that count in bringing a team over the top. He is a winner, who will help bring our team back to unison. Winners should coach winners and Scott deserves our head coaching position.

Correction to my Dwightmare thread.

Sorry guys, I was corrected, and my math is wrong because I disregarded an important rule.

If we accept a player in a S&T we not only have be under the apron right after the trade,
but we have to stay under the apron the whole season.

Basically the Apron becomes a hard cap, if a team takes a player in a S&T.

This means, that after we trade for Howard, we have to fill the roster and still be under the apron.
This changes the whole story.

This means basically, that we would not be able to use the Mini MLE this offseason, and also we would have to wait till next summer to use the TE that we recieve for Hump + Tele + Brooks.

Also, instead of the 490k minimum caphold that I used with my calculation, we have to use $884,293 (the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran) for several spots, because that is what vet min contracts count against the cap for veterans, and we obviously can not fill the whole roster with secound round pick rookies.

Basically:
JJ: $21,466,718
Dwight: $20,513,178
D-Will: $18,466,130
Wallace: $10,105,885
Toko: $788,872
Taylor: $788,872
Blatche: $884,293
6 more vet minimum players also $884,293

That puts our cap number at $77,435,415

We can lower this by ~0.8-1.2million by signing 2-3 second round draft picks, who can be signed for ~490,000 so they count 394k less then veterans.
So let’s say we trade our first round pick for a second rounder in the Hump+Tele+Brooks salary dump, and we purchase 1 more second round pick with cash, and Bojan comes over for the rookie minimum as well.
That puts us at: $76,253,074

That is still below the expected apron.

It is still doable, but not as easy as I tought.
This way would be tough to get a good bench for next year, as we would not be able to spend the mini-MLE, and we would not be allowed to use the TE.
(Next summer though we could still be able use both.)

Even is we could pay Bogdanovic’s buyout, and he would accept rookie minimum, our roster would still look like this:
D-Will / Taylor / FA
JJ / Bogdanovic
Crash / Toko / FA
Blatche / FA
Dwight / FA / FA
Where the 2 of the FA-s are rookie second rounders, and the rest are veteran minimum contracts.

B-Lo (a.k.a. Brook Lopez)

I think that B-Lo is all he needs to to be other than one thing that really bugs me about him...GOING UP STRONG when under the basket. He needs to look and study tapes of Shaq, D. Howard and even some powerful forwards as well. I believe this change in his ball positioning will stop him from being stripped of the ball as often as he does and allow him to increase his score by scoring even more baskets & sending him to the line more often, not to mention more foul trouble for the opposing team players. He can also work a little more on footwork but that is not huge right now. I think with little subtle changes as these that there will be no player at the 5 that they will be able to place above him (even Dwight), he's not going to ever get the ups as Howard and maybe not be compared to him in blocked shots but he has the potential to be a more valuable player simply because he can shoot foul shots...and foul shots often than most things win games. Your thoughts and opinions and reasons...please.

Unless there's been a clear indication that Jeff Van Gundy doesn't want that job that I am unaware of, can someone explain to me why he is not one of our top targets according to "sources".

Brian Shaw is a great number 2 option, but for a young and developing team. But our team is built to win now. And I think JVG fits that mold. He preaches defense and toughness. He will not let the team play with no heart like we did last season (yes I agree with Charles Barkley). He'll help give this team an identity, culture, and an attitude. A team always takes on the personality of their coach. He's done great work with big men in the past (Ewing Yao) and can make Brook even better but more importantly tougher.

He'll bring that New York style of ball that I think is perfect and what we need in Brooklyn.

Unless there's been a clear indication that Jeff Van Gundy doesn't want that job that I am unaware of, can someone explain to me why he is not one of our top targets according to "sources".

I was thinking it would be fun to do a poll/prediction thread for the Draft this year. Since the Draft is a little over a month away, it is the right time to do this.

The guy I want is Tony Mitchell. I think he's just what we need. An athletic PF, who can come in and give us some sort of an immediate impact. Personally, if he's available when the Nets are up, I don't see them passing on him for some Euro. At least, that's what I hope.

i know stephen jackson was cut prior to the playoffs in favor of tmac, now I'm not sure if that makes him a free agent going into the offseason but I'm assuming it does. a lot of ppl on the board talk about how we need toughness and emotion and also talk about how we need help at sf and on the wing. additionally ppl talk about how we need help shooting and closing games. stephen jackson fills literally all of those wholes and at this stage in his career after the money he's made can maybe be had for the minimum if not id use the MMLE on him. what do you guys think about bringing him back.

Of all the great things about the barclays experience one thing that I felt was crap always is the lady that comes out at half time and breaks to hype up the crowd using T-shirts. I feel that this is such an important role that has an impact on the game via the fans in some ways similar to the role an announcer can play and that they really blew it by hiring this lady.

personally she felt to me like a resentful actor/model/singer type that had this attitude that her job was beneath her or not good enough for her and she loathed doing it. she clearly had no clue of crowd dynamics and how to work the crowd. and really, didn't care to.

you can't just expect people to cheer just because you asked them to. you have to be entertaining and work the crowd, have a relationship. she would consistently get irate when the crowd wouldn't respond much when she would say "where's brooklyn?" as if the fans are robots that should automatically just start cheering because she said so without putting in any genuine effort what so ever to have a like-able relationship. Fans might even start cheering just from that if she lost that 'better than thou' attitude.

It's really the one significant part of the experience that left a bad taste for me when I would attend games.

Yes, it is possible. The numbers add up perfectly.
And yes, Brook Lopez has to be part of it.
And yes, Prokhy still wants it, therefore Billy will try... I’m pretty sure we will have one last Dwightmare this summer.

Here are the numbers:

As of right now our guaranteed payroll for next season stands at $84.45 mill
That’s for 10 players, so assuming we renounce all our free agents, you have to add 3 times the rookie minumum of $0.49 mill as cap holds.
Basically we are around $85.92 mill right now.

The salary cap this season was $58 million. The Luxury Tax Threshold was $70.3 mill, therefore the apron was $74.3 mill.
According to what I read, the expected LTT for next season is around $73 mill. That takes the apron to ~$77 mill.
Maximum contract for Dwight Howard starts at $20,5 million.

Teams above the “apron” can not recieve S&T-ed players.
And you have to be under the apron after the trade…

So here is how it can work:

Basically if we trade Hump + Tele + MarShon for capspace, that saves us 16,44 mill, and puts us at 69,46 mill with 7 players.
After that we can trade Lopez + Evans ($14,69 mill +$1,70 = $16,39 mill ) for Howard ($20,5 mill)
That will take us to $73,57 million, with 6 players:
Howard /
/
Crash / Toko
JJ /
Deron / Taylor

13 players is the minimum, so we have to add 7 times the minimum cap hold, which is 0,49 mill, and that would be 3,43 million dollars.
That makes our cap number exactly $77 mill after the sign and trade.

The question is of course the exact salary cap (and LTT and apron) for next season.
If the apron is lower than $77 mill, the only way to make it work is for Howard to accept a small paycut.

As for the rest of the roster we would still have a lot of options:

According to NI, although an NBA team can only pay 500k per year year for Bogdanovic’s buyout (not counting against the cap) there might be a way to cover the whole buyout amount by using a loan, or spreading out the buyout through 2 years.
This way, Bogdanovic would not have to pay for his buyout from the money that he earns through his contract.
I’d really love it if he would sign for the rookie minimum, and leave our MLE intact.

Obviously we also want to keep Blatche, but in my calculations we renounced his rights.
That doesn’t make a big difference for him though:
The maximum we can pay him using non-bird rights is a 20% raise from last season: $1,375,604.
If we renounce his rights, and sign him to a simple veteran minimum contract, that is $1,265,977.
Because of the “set-off” rule (washington pays him more, if we pay him less), this would only mean a $55k paycut for Blatche overall, but ~$900k extra capspace for us. (if we hold on to his rights, his caphold is 1,37 mill, instead of the 0,49 minimum caphold.)

If everything works out like this:
-we trade away Hump + Tele + Brooks for TE
-we trade Lopez + Evans for Howard
-we retain Blatche for vet min
-we sign Bogdanovic for rookie min
We will have the following:

C – Howard /
PF – Blatche /
SF – Crash / Toko
SG – JJ / Bogdanovic
PG – D-Will / Taylor
-mini MLE of 3million to spend on veteran free agent
-our first round draft pick
-3 million cash to buy more draft picks if needed
-a huge 16,44 million trade exeption and all future first round picks to use in a trade to get another all-star level player.
-veteran minimum contracts to fill the rest of the roster with.

He might be willing to play for the minimum. He did last year in LA, and this is almost as big a market, with a better opportunity to become part of the offense.

He brings scoring, rebounding, toughness and intelligence to the forward position. Previously, whether it was Humphries, Blatche, Evans or Wallace we had to settle for just one of those at a time.

This certainly wasn't how we imagined the first season closing, but before I go to sleep, I just want to thank Bobby for allowing me to experience moments that countless fans in the sports world will never experience. I've invested more time into following and supporting this team this season than I ever have before, but never did I imagine having the opportunity to actually go to Brooklyn and watch the team in person for so many defining moments. I simply wouldn't have been able to afford it.

To put things into perspective, the Nets are in the league's biggest market now. God knows what bounds they can reach in the years that follow. But whatever happens, whether you've started with this team in New Jersey or joined the fanbase in Brooklyn, you are a part of the foundation of what is hopefully a global franchise in the works.

I was unable to attend Games 2, 5, and 7, but even now knowing that we lost, I would've still loved to have been there tonight chanting until my voice was gone and, in the end, thank Bobby and each of you for making me appreciate this team and fanbase even more. Stay strong, Brooklyn Brigade.

Bargnani for Hump?

So apparently Italians and Canadians don't mesh. After an injury riddled season that saw Bargnani make some interesting comments about his team, he might have just worn out his welcome in the land up north. His stock is way down and you know Toronto will be listening to trade offers. This creates the perfect scenario for the Nets to get that elusive power forward they've needed all season. Hump has an expiring contract worth 12M next season. Bargnani is set to make 10M for the next 2 years. This works for both sides because it clears cap for the crucial offseason next year, which includes major free agents. For the Raptors who are looking to find a Batman to their multiple robins (DeRozan & Gay), 12M off the books next year couldn't sound better. The Nets get a player who averaged 21.5 ppg just 2 seasons ago. Bargnani is smack dab in the middle of his prime at the age of 27 and could add some much needed offense a team who's main forte was supposed to be offense. Tell me what you think in the comments!

I like that this website is one in which people are generally civil to each other. It seems problematic that one of the main moderators and contributors to the site does not seem to be similarly civil.

Please don't warn or ban me for expressing these views in a manner that I think is respectful. This website offers a lot of great info and is a great community, but it seems like the joy it brings is being considerably hampered.
