Lakers Put Nets Away Early

November 29, 2009, 11:49 pm

There was never any doubt that the Nets would tie the NBA record for the longest winless streak to start a season Sunday night in L.A. A 22-2 Lakers run in the first quarter made this one a blowout before Tom Barrise could even think about making his first in-game adjustment as an NBA head coach. The New Jersey offense continued its run of futility (34 points in the first half), while Kobe Bryant ended his string of poor shooting nights against the Nets, leading all scorers with 30 points on 11-17. Brook Lopez led the Nets with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Devin Harris and Courtney Lee also finished in double-figures.

  1. Alex F Says:

I just wanna cry. Happy to see Courtney get playing time and shoot well though.

  2. MrT Says:

We’re in bad shape as a franchise right now. I know I’m a bit despondent, even despite the low expectations.

  3. ben Says:

Enough with the same starting lineups. Start the young players and that means put hassell on the bench. Harris Lee CDR Sean and Lopez

  4. VINCE Says:

    fire tom barrise! hahaha

  5. netsball Says:

    Swat and Terrence Williams studs?
whatever happened to TWill’s basketball savvy that and high IQ?
this guy was getting compared to D-Wade by some of you people in here? more like isiah rider without a jumper…….
    terrible player right now…

players who would be riding the bench as the 12th man or 15th reserve on any other team are:

    BOBBY SIMMONS
    SEAN WILLIAMS
    TRENTON HASSELL

players who should be coming off the bench as a 7th or 9th man but starting because the team sucks

    CDR
    Josh Boone

with that said, very impressed with Courtney Lee tonight and Brook, once the guy learns how to establish himself more down low and learn how to pass the ball around effectively he’s gonna play well with a healthy devin harris…
can’t wait till Courtney Lee starts again and Yi comes back

    TWill sucks

  6. 1sparks1 Says:

It’s just one game but tom you suck; id rather have frank back. Kiki better be coaching cus the last thing this team needs is another wussy coach. Lakers announcers were dissing boone all night. LOl. Boone plays like a WNBA player.

  7. MrT Says:

They’re talking about us right now on SportsCenter. This sucks! This is not fun! Screw Ratner and the Barclays Center and cost-cutting and anything else that led to our current record. Our team has been forsaken in the name of real estate development!

  8. rayray Says:

How many times does Marv have to tell us that the Nets are heading to a tie for worst start in the NBA? Really?!! He started saying it at the beginning of the first quarter – or, perhaps, earlier. Since he then said it about 100 more times, do you think the team heard him? And Marv has a total man-crush on Kobe. It’s horrible listening to him call a Nets game against the Lakers. As if things weren’t bad enough, we’ve got Marv telling us that no free agents will want to come to our team, blah, blah, blah. Can I “Ask the Announcers” when Marv is one of them to just shut up and let me sync up my radio with the TV? I know the guy’s a legend and all, but he didn’t become a legend with us. He somehow felt like salt in our many wounds tonight -every single time he opened his mouth. Thanks for listening to / reading my rant. I feel better now.

  9. jarkid Says:

We have to beat the Mavs next game, period. Avoid being the new record.

The wolves beat the Nuggets on the road, impossible’s nothing.

  10. Pablo Says:

VC and RA…Why did thorn have to trade them? Did he actually think big name free agents were going to come to the Nets after this season?

Great by job Thorn/Kiki/RAT putting this disgrace of a team together.

0-17 and counting. Nets are going to destroy this record..

  11. Randy Oreens Says:

We did really well tonight against league champions, with such short notice I think our new coach did well. It was time for a change and he will bring us back from falling through the cracks.

  12. netsvc Says:

So just one question to everybody….how did the whole “fire frank” work out for everybody? Down by as much as 34!! Right now I’m listening to everybody just laugh at the NETS…soo can’t wait till next season then lets c what everybody has to say…but until then wats wrong with trying to trade for boozer and michael redd? 2 expiring contracts…what do u guys think?

  13. jerrod Says:

CDR is in his rookie season, he got 0 PT last season. Lee is a great player, Lopez is a Great player, Devin is a great player, CDR is a great scorer. We need to play like a team. Farmar got that block, because of bad team play. Rafer should have passed that then set a pick for Lee, who was right next to him. Bad basketball = losing. We need ball movement. CDR needs to hog the ball more

  14. jarkid Says:

    @ben

sure, Lee is starting to look good. His pull-up jumpers, and driving layups are pretty good tonight.

    Harris
    Lee
    CDR
    Boone
    Lopez

    time to go

  15. LetsGoNets Says:

The loss was expected… just didn’t think it would be this bad.

  16. jerrod Says:

Oh and to all the Yi haters, we need him badly. Simmons, and Boone suck

  17. jarkid Says:

I’d prefer watch terrence play the 4, not simmons to clank the shots.

  18. TJ Says:

All I can say is… we will definitely not go 0-82. We still have several games to play against the Knicks and one more against the Wolves. I hope that the Nets won’t be the sole owner of the most losses to start a season. Maybe Captain Kidd will tell his team to lay down for us. If we start off at 0-30 or something like that then it’s time to seriously talk about changing the name of the Nets as soon as next season.

  19. NetsSince76 Says:

Trading RA and VC = stupidity. Quality free agents don’t come to crap teams with lots of cap flexibility (see Chicago Bulls post-MJ).

Thorn needed to position Nets as Ainge positioned Celtics (and grabbed two stars to add to Pierce). Didn’t happen and now Nets are screwed for years.

Nets roster is so bad that Lakers appear to be in a different league.

  20. MoMo Says:

I felt disgusted just watching this game, this team is absolutely atrocious.

not one free agent will come to us this offseason.

  21. KJV Says:

Ok, time for Kiki to take the helm. Well, i would not mind Tom Thibodeau either. Actually TT would have been sweet!

  22. NetFan48 Says:

@ Netsball…..frank crushed TWILL’S confidence..Hopefully he will get it back…frank destroyed this whole teams ego…I’m sure that barrise will bring it back…CLEE has come out of his shell now that frank is gone and in general they all look a lot happier……

  23. Paul Erstein Says:

Red Auerbach couldn’t have coached US to a victory versus the Lakers last night with this roster, at this point. I think Thorn did LFrank a favor, getting him out before the record is made…We are NOT going to beat DALLAS either…THERE ARE several players who we should send to the GULAG, maybe Proky can help us with that? Next chance at a win????Versus Golden State, Don Nelson is crazy, maybe he forfeits the game to us?

  24. MrT Says:

Does anyone think we can beat Charlotte or the Knicks? Knicks already beat us once at Izod. You can chalk up the next game against Dallas as a loss. Just trying to figure when our first victory will come.

  25. NetsSince76 Says:

Nets best bets for victories in December:

    Knicks on December 6.

    Even better:
Minnesota only has two victories this year– Nets play them on Dec 23. They had a 15 game losing streak going into today.

  26. jerry25 Says:

Short term solution to coaching problem is for Kiki to accept coaching position but have him name Barrise as co-head coach.

That is Kiki makes all the game-time decisions but Barrise does most of the work at other times.

Kiki could use the excuse that he is too busy as GM during this transition period to devote full time to coaching.

Players would have more respect for Kiki, especially since he would trade or bench players if they didn’t perform.

Kiki needs to be out there teaching TWill.

Another reason to have Kiki as coach is that when team still doesn’t win, he would be more likely to get management to make a trade or two before deadline, to avoid further embarrassment.

This seems to be Kiki’s decision and currently he has cold feet.

  27. JustinNJ Says:

Terrence Williams is a fine player. He must improve his scoring, but, he is only a rookie. He needs to regain his swagger that he had when the season started. Coaching can improve all those things. He NEEDS to be on the court. It is hard to get going with 15 min per game.

  28. JustinNJ Says:

How fitting, Jason Kidd can hand us our league history worst 18th loss in a row to start the season this Wed. Ah, the good ole’ days ….Corner pocket from JASON KIDD!

  29. Isaac Says:

    at MrT:

“Screw Ratner and the Barclays Center and cost-cutting and anything else that led to our current record. Our team has been forsaken in the name of real estate development!”

You said it! About time everyone else on here realized it. Thanks for the worst team in the history of the league Ratner!!!

  30. JustinNJ Says:

Our future lies now on hitting the lottery with the top pick next year and building through the draft. Spurs did it with Duncan, Cavs with Lebron, Orlando with Howard. It will be hard to convince a top tier free agent to join this team as it is built right now.

  31. jerry25 Says:

    Marv Albert is terrible.
The Nets supporters here have better ideas than he does about what the team needs to do. I don’t think he spends a moment of his free time ever thinking about ways to improve team such as making a trade or two before deadline, so as to make club more attractive to FA.

Marv never mentioned the significance of having one of the world’s richest people taking over team or that the Nets could get the #1 draft pick. His only input was “would the Nets overpay for a B or C level free agent” since a top FA was out of the question.

It might be true that Lebron wouldn’t come to play for THIS Nets team, but there would be even less chance he plays for the Knicks.

  32. HahaHehe Says:

Wow….total blowout! Now, the nets are kicking themselves thinking what life would have been like if they had somehow managed to stop D-Wade’s last minute 3pt, which helped Miami win the game, that game was totally Nets to own, but they should have known who was going to get the ball.

Seeing Timberwolves playing an elite team today proves that records don’t mean anything. It all how much the players are willing to put in. I didn’t see any of that tonight. So many point blank layups and shots missed! Did they even shoot around before the game? Cuz they were acting like it was a 12 foot goal. I’m willing to say they are going to go 0-29 before they host the Timberwolves and win.

  33. jerry25 Says:

Marv Albert did have One useful item. Apparently Keyon Dooling told them that he should be ready to play in about a week.

Nets should look to trade Alston now, if a trade becomes available. Orlando might need him back. Brendan Bass and his manageable contract would stop the Nets slide.

TWill should be getting the minutes that are going to Hassell and Alston. SWill should get more minutes at PF instead of center – Boone should get the backup center minutes.

Simmons shouldn’t be playing unless he can get stick to corner 3s as he did last year. Hasn’t anyone told him?

  34. jerry25 Says:

Tonight’s game should have Nets fans wondering if CDR is really more valuable than CLee. CLee (6-9 in only 26 min) is probably Nets best outside shooter and a better defender.

  35. smelly Says:

Was this really necessary? Seems kind of classless to me, no matter where the Nets were when it happened. It’s not like the Lakers accomplished anything, or that anyone at Staples really needed to be told then and there. From the AP game story:

“The Lakers’ public address announcer recognized the Nets’ historic loss after the game, though he had the decency to wait until New Jersey was in its locker room.”

  36. smelly Says:

Loved this from the game story too:

    *****

“It’s not a good feeling,” Nets guard Devin Harris said. “It’s not a good feeling all around. Guys are mentally frustrated right now. For some reason (what’s going on in practice) is not transforming over.”

    *****

Umm, Devin, perhaps that’s because in practice — unlike in any game — you are playing . . . the Nets?

  37. watcher Says:

The only lucky one is Frank, who narrowly escaped being remembered as the coach of this franchise that made history.

  38. Panareal Says:

For the FIRST pick of the 2010 NBA DRAFT, the New Jersey Nets select…

  39. jarkid Says:

Wolves beat Denver, I have a feeling that the Nets will beat the Dallas next game.

    Harris 26 points 8 asssists, C.Lee 23 points.

  40. MrT Says:

    smelly,

That’s pretty bad! But these sort of things happen when ownership goes into cost-cutting mode. And all in the name of real estate that will benefit neither the team or its’ fans. Glad I wasn’t there to hear it, though.

  41. superb Says:

    play the young kids.

tell twill to stop shooting jumpers and drive to the lane. he has become lazy.

    cdr took the nite off.

lee showed me something, not exactly sure what it was but it was something.

boone wont be here next year. he has no confidence in anything he does anymore.

    lets go 2010!

  42. NetsSince76 Says:

As for longest NBA losing streaks, 18 would only set the new record to start a season. The record for an NBA losing streak for the regular season is 24 games by the Cavs over the 81-82 and 82-83 seasons. For one season it is 23 games by the 1995-6 Grizzlies and the 1997-8 Denver Nuggets.

  43. muwu Says:

We can’t get the worst record in the league! The one with the worst record never gets the number one pick! We need to get better than someone or else the summer will be a wash as well

  44. freddy Says:

It didn’t look like they work hard enough to get W.

  45. VAN HORN Says:

Last week everyone hated Courtney Lee. Tonight he is better then CDR. CDR was being shadowed by Artest the whole night. No reason why they both can’t start together.

    Harris
    Lee
    CDR
    Boone
    Lopez

Bury Hassell on the bench next to Simmons

    All in due time, I say . . .

  47. watcher Says:

On one side, of course the Nets is dead give-away to every other team, relaxing and fun, get an easy W and call it night. But shouldn’t they bear slightest pressure in fear to be the first team that DIDN’T walk away with a W? think about it, the humiliation, “they lost to who? WTF” It’s sad, but I think that’s the only advantage (tangible or phychological) the Nets have.

  48. Edd Says:

This team is doomed from top to bottom. From owner to players. The time between New Jersey and Brooklyn is like an eternity. It’ll be probably better to sell this time to somebody in Seattle for a penny than wait for the Russian and the Brooklyn arena. Or for somebody well-off enough for the team to stay in NJ and play in the Rock.

  49. ram bunkshus Says:

At this point can anyone honestly find 9 wins on the remaining schedule? Because I can’t, which means that the 0-17 (soon to be 0-28 start until the Twolves rematch win #1) will just be a footnote in this season’s disaster… They will easily set the record for most losses in an 82 game season… How soon before Lopez, CDR, Devin, Lee start making trade demands? Everybody is talking about all this so-called young talent but our best players will run away from this sinking ship, just a matter of time. In fact by the middle of this season I would expect Harris to be traded while he still has value. The guy is a magnet for injuries and he is not a long-term answer at the PG position… plus he will be almost 30 by the time brooklyn happens… Trade him now, go 0-82, get John Wall or Ed Davis or Derrick Favors or Evan Turner (worst record can’t pick below 4th so we’re a lock for one of those guys). It’s obvious this team can’t win and Devin Harris quit on them half way through last year when LFrank benched him… Now he got his wish and Frank was fired and he still can’t lead a team to wins… What a debacle… After what Twolves did last night in Denver, hard to pencil the Twolves rematch as a win…..

  50. mr. omG Says:

i agree with many of you guys calling this lineup:

    Lopez
    SWat
    CDR
    Lee
    Harris

i mean its young and most of them (yeah! most) have talent, as for SWat he can block some shoots or we can just play Boone at PF.

Still we tied the WORST NBA RECORD and seems we cant beat even WNBA teams right now!

    PLZ lets end this torment

Fire Thorn, Ratner and Kiki plz :D :D :D

P.S Now what the VC haters have to say eh? i bet $$$1,000,000,00 that with VC in command we might have won at least 8-9 games by now

  51. Chris2 Says:

I am starting to think that the Nets traded the wrong guy this past offseason. We could have kept Vince/Ryan and traded Devin while his value was the highest it will likely ever be. We could have easily dumped Najera along with Devin and gotten a top 10 pick to choose Flynn, who we liked, or optimally Jennings who we didn’t like as much as Flynn, but who we may have taken if we knew we were losing Devin and Flynn was already gone. The Bucs would have loved to bring hometown boy Harris back, I’m sure..

    Jennings – Ridnour
    CDR – Dooling
    Carter – Illyasova – TWill
    Anderson – Yi
    Lopez – Boone

With enough cap space for a max contract in 2010. That team is likely a playoff squad…hindsight is 20/20 though…

  52. mr. omG Says:

Stern: For the New jersey Nets, the team that ended 0-82 they select……

    …………

    …………

Stern: where is the Boy ?????

Fat Guy: Hey!!! hes running away from the set !!!!

    Stern: But why !!!

Fat guy: He left a note…

    Stern: Let me see…..

    Stern: the note says:

Dear Nets, im sorry i cant stay to play but i heard your record is so bad and your front office is even worse that i forgot to turn off my oven in Thailand, ill take my time to get there by walk, i just love the fresh air!!!

until you be a better team with more than 20 wins!!

with love and no hard feelings (really no hard feelings)

    -#1 pick.

Rat, Thorn: Now what are we going to do?

Kiki: Let us wait 5 more years until a new group of free agents are avaiable again, i heard that malik allen, ben wallace, allen iverson and shaq will still be around

Stern: anyway we must continue now…

stern: Well….. im sorry Nets but we just cant do anything about it, better luck next time. Now moving to the 2nd overall….

omG i felt this letter comming from the bottom of my heart.

    :( sniffs!!!

i feel the same letters will come from every big name this comming summer. Bosh, Lebron, Wade, David Lee….

  53. ram bunkshus Says:

In order to NOT have the worst 82 game record for an NBA season, the nets need to go at least 10-55 the rest of the way, to finish 10-72. Can anybody find 10 wins on the schedule??? Hell can anybody find 5 wins on this schedule??? This is so depressing :(

  54. Jb Says:

If Steve Carrell playing Michael Scott was posting here, it would read something like what mr. Omg posted.

All you people whining were the first ones to cheer when Vince was traded. Did you all expect a win against the best team in the league within hours of firing our head coach? I’m fine with having a crap record since we’ll be competing with the T’Wolves and Knicks (Jazz) for the #1 pick. I would just like a win here and there since Brook and CDR look like they’re reaching their breaking point.

And the same people complaining about TWill’s shooting % are the same ones that were preaching “you can teach shooting” all off season. We’re a month into the season. He’s a rookie. Give it time!!

  55. JuliusIrving Says:

We need a new coach to change the style. Can we sign Mark Jackson for a $1M and give him an automatic extension of 3 years with a good offer. I think the guy would like to start coaching at any cost just to prove himself.

  56. Mike Says:

If the new coach comes in and starts Hassel, I will take the rest of the year off. Hassel, Simmons and Alston should not be playing so many minutes. Live and die with the youngsters. I’m starting to think that Thorn and Kiki are not as smart as the media thinks, we think, and they themselves think. Maybe we need to totally clean house. What is the NBA waiting for? Approve Proky and lets start moving.

  57. JT Says:

    Release Barrise!

  58. Mike Says:

Get rid of Marv Albert while your at it. What a putz.

  59. MoMo Says:

    @jb

I guess for four years Louisville didn’t have shooting coaches? This guy will never have a good jumpshot, but it doesn’t mean he can’t be a solid player.

  60. Joanne Says:

Can someone please tell me why Pau Gasol was in the game in the 4th quarter!-

  61. Mike Says:

    @Joanne;
Because Phil Jackson is such a class act!

  62. Edd Says:

It’s amazing how this Laker team is so insecure.
Regarding Harris, looks very unhappy. I don’t blame him. Now that Carter is gone, who commands a double team he has no room to penetrate into the basket. It won’t be long before he demands a trade.

  63. Wiggz maloy Says:

    @Joanne and Mike

Pau just got back from injury and his conditioning is off. Phill just wanted him to get used to play more minutes without having a heart attack.

  64. diehardNFFLbarnone Says:

@ mr. omG – Replace Chris Douglas-Roberts with Terrence Williams.
