Kiki: Nets Unlikely to Hand Out Two Max Contracts

November 21, 2009, 1:47 pm

In a WFAN interview, Kiki Vandeweghe said the salary cap may be too low to permit the Nets to sign two players to max contracts. Instead, they might sign one player to a max contract and another to a $10 million contract or one to a max contract and several players to smaller contracts. He also suggested Sean Williams’ career with the Nets may not be over and talked about how much the Nets liked Brandon Jennings.

  1. jeff. Says:

i think even signing two max deals was unrealistic, but its good that they’re thinking about spending money. With a marquee free agent. a second tier free agent, a top pick, and two other picks, our future is extremely bright!

  2. Randy Oreens Says:

I like this we should sign a player like Joe Johnson to a max contract then sign Carlos Boozer to a 2 year contract. Then from there go into free agency signing back up and bench players to go with our bench.
I hope we keep Sean the past couple of games he has proved he can help us and he shows his defensive ability is great.

  3. Jim Says:

I think Brian Scalabrine / Acie Law is more reasonable for us as our two main signings next year.

  4. Net Income Says:

    @Jeff
are you watching the game today?

  5. Jack Handy Says:

Hmmm… how much they liked Jennings?

Like I said.. Harris to the Bucks for expirers and #10 would have netted us not only Jennings, but that 2nd max as well.

Meanwhile I say we shop Harris and Najera around the league for a expirers + picks/prospects so two max FAs can be a possibility. Meanwhile if I’m a max FA I go to Miami to play with Wade, Chicago to play with Rose, NY to play in the Garden or stay with my current team to make the most money.. but if I can go to NJ and play with another Max FA (along with Lopez, the #1, T.Will, etc).. that is the best scenario outside of Miami.

  6. jeff. Says:

    @NetIncome
oh yeah the score as of now is 74-67

  7. jarkid Says:

Sean Williams is blocking the shots now. Of course, he can be a keep, we can give him a new contract.

  8. mr. omG Says:

if we dont sign 2 players to max, that means proky isnt comming and we wont get Wade And David Lee…..

hmm i see another decade of unsuccesfull campaigns at the IZOD.

  9. tu vieja Says:

i say trade harris along wit the dallas pik 4 jennings

  10. Ryan243 Says:

The future is bright. Have faith. And signing Joe Johnson would be a major mistake. Why sign him when we dealt Carter? I would prefer Carter over Johnson to begin with.

I think if you added Bosh to this team – we would go far. But they can’t be foolish about spending money. Boozer is another guy who is not the answer.

But again, you have to see where we are drafting. And hope that Dallas starts to lose some games. The West is so good that even after their hot start – an injury or simply bad luck could push them down in the West.

And I still think that we are able to net a pick or another young player by dealing a guy like Alston.

And once again – Sean made an impact today. If nothing else, he is at least gaining some value as a trade chip.

  11. Mr. Dollar Bills Says:

Sean Williams has been playing his butt off. Looks like NI’s talk about Sean was a bit premature.

  12. Ely Says:

Getting a caliber coach is going to be essential to a caliber FA to come to the Nets. Money’s all good, but winning is another thing.

  13. Randy Oreens Says:

Sorry guys Joe Johnson will not come here why would he come to an awful team he wants to go to a good team. He doesnt want to go to a team like NJ. We wont get anyone good inreturn.

  14. Andrés Says:

Sean has been playing really really hard. I hope we keep him beyond this season. Keep up the good work, Swat!

  15. Jeff Says:

The Nets need Sean Williams on the court rather than the sidelines cheering on other players who don’t play as well as he does. The Nets need his kick ass mindset. Brook needs his help. Sean is tough and the Nets need tough in the worst way. GOOD JOB SEAN!! GO NETS!!

  16. Bobbynets Says:

Lawrence Frank has known Brandon Jennings for like 2 years. He’s shown giving him a speech in the documentary “Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot”.

  17. fury Says:

we should sign iverson for 1 year .as a die hard nets fan i cant stomach all this losing. he will bring much needed offense and would compliment devin harris in the backcourt he’ll also help our weak attendance a little bit & in the same token he would be auditioning for other teams for next year. courtney lee is trash i would put him on the bench

  18. superb Says:

lets focus on bosh. if lebron comes here we are still weak up front unless we can pull a trade and get a banger. maybe we can pry haslem from the heat?

i would def like to see camby come off the bench too to back up lopez.

also need to address our poor 3 point shooting.

  19. Dziedzic Says:

This Kiki/Rod are always two steps ahead of everybody. Love to see it in management. The need next year is PF/Backup Center. We have the pieces already at the 1/2/3/5….Next year T.Battie/R.Alston/B.Simmons/E.Najera all will be gone. With our two draft picks it is not necessary to just jump into free agency. The money is going to needed to sign our young guys to longer contracts soon. Kiki/Rod great job in transforming this team so fast in two years. 14 out 15 new players in two years is pretty solid management in my book. Go Brooklyn Nets! Go Brooklyn Nets!

  20. NJ savior Says:

Camby would be a great back up and that could push Sean to the back up 4. I think Boone will be gone. This team will look great once we find out which lottery spot we will be getting. Does anyone know the last big free agent that came to a losing team?

  21. Chris2 Says:

Its not going to be easy to get a legit max guy to sign here. Kiki makes it sound like its a foregone conclusion, but its not the case. I think Lebron is likely to stay put in Clevelend, they may even win the championship this year. If we have a chance to get Lebron, you best find a way to bring in another star player with him. Not David Lee. More like Chris Bosh. And right now we don’t have the space. I think Joe Johnson is max worthy but he will likely stay with the Hawks. Wade is out of reach. Dirk is staying in Dallas. Amare is possible but I think he is the Knicks fall back option and I suspect he would go to the Knicks and his old coach D’Antoni before here. The most likely scenario of us getting an elite talent next year is our own draft pick. Now this being said…I am glad we have the most cap room in the league. If Brooklyn is on the way and Prokhy and all his money bags are ready for the most over the top recruitment ever, I think we have a shot at him. But its not the likely scenario.

  22. Net Income Says:

If Rod is two steps ahead of everyone, how come every pick from the second round in 2002 to the first round in 2008 was a bust?

  23. Net Income Says:

Sean Williams went 0 for 5 and fouled out. Yeah, he blocked three shots, but the same issues that have plagued him continue to do so.

  24. Ispartan Says:

    @ dziedzic

    sarcasm? Lol

  25. Mohammad Says:

@Chris2- If the you’re telling me the Nets saved up all this money by trading three star players away for nothing then it’s nothing more then a waste. If it is indeed the case, the franchise may NEVER win a championship. If you think that we should not focus on the 2010 FA, you’re crazy because the goal should be to sign a LeBron type player, not worry about what’s gonna happen the in draft. Believe me, if we don’t land a star player, I don’t care what you or what anyone else says, this franchise won’t win a championship during its time in the NBA.

  26. jb Says:

NI, he went 0 for 5 and fouled out as the back up CENTER. He did well the other night as PF, his proper position, coming off the bench.

  27. jirohkanzaki Says:

why trade devin harris? people don’t seem to realize he is only getting $8M/yr…say all the negative things about his game but he is a bargain for a player his caliber…yeah, it would have been nice to get jennings but only through the draft which was sabotaged by the nets’ decision to win the last games even as we were out of the playoffs as if it was virtue…if they wanted to give that effort it should have been early in the year not when you’re already out of the running…also with the way the nets are playing we have a good chance to nab point guard and leading candidate for #1 pick overall john wall.

  28. Kevin Says:

Sean Williams changed the game a fueled a rally without scoring.

Not saying go lock him up to a new deal, but i would certainly rather have him back than boone.

But with 2 draft picks and at least 2 solid free agents coming in, it’s unlikely either is back.

  29. Andrés Says:

Sean Williams lacks an offensive game, but his defensive game, hustle and energy are game changing. If he keeps up the good work, I would being him back without a doubt. I like Boone too. Opie’s putrid small ball is hurting him.

  30. jerry25 Says:

Did everyone see Devin Harris today?
His first day back and he is already making spectacular plays including alley-oop passes and a driving dunk.

Jennings meanwhile is mostly a pure shooter, who happens to be hot at this time. Lots of players have hot shooting streaks over 10 or more games. He wasn’t impressive in Italy for a whole season last year. With Bogut out, lets see if Milwaukee can still win.

Thank you, but I’ll stick with Devin Harris as the Nets point guard of the future.

  31. femdig Says:

Sean Williams changes the game with his aggressive play and blocked shots; he had 3 blocked shots today.

SWAT and Brook Lopez need to play more minutes together!

  32. Andrés Says:

    Brook on Swat:
    ———————————————————-
“Sean’s just been great these past five games after sitting for the majority of the season,” Lopez said. “He’s come out and hasn’t missed a step, has been there mentally, bringing energy and making stops, making plays. He’s been there to save my butt, honestly, and having him out there, I can’t even explain how important it is to me.”
    ———————————————————-
Here’s what Swat told Kerber after the Miami game:
    ———————————————————–
“I was just happy that I had meaningful minutes, especially at my natural position, playing alongside Brook. It was fun out there with him. Now I just hope all of it can translate into some Ws,” Williams said.
    ———————————————————–
Play them together more, Opie, enough with all this crappy small ball!

  33. Andy Says:

yeah man but frank wont do it…

  34. SIC Says:

I have said it before just because Thorn didnt sign Swill’s extension doesnt mean he wont be a Net next year. It was a financial move. Clearly you can see he loves being a Net. He needs more time but once all the FA stuff is done next year, I can see the nets bring him back for less if another team doesnt offer him a contract.

  35. jerry25 Says:

If SWat isn’t traded before deadline, as part of a multi-team mult-player deal, then he will probably be given a new chance after Proky hires a new coach. However, don’t expect much PT for someone who is no better than a #12 player on the roster.
Any time SWat gets extra PT due to injuries will help his chances.

A key to the Nets near short term future is getting Dooling back to last year’s level, so that Alston can be traded to one of those teams in need of an experienced PG, due to injury (Alston’s expiring contract is perfect). SWat could be a desirable throw-in by then.

Nets hopefully will get a big man (PF/C) as part of some 3 way deal. Kiki said they are always looking. (they sure weren’t looking before Proky entered the picture)

  36. superb Says:

interesting that lopez seems to disagree with netincomes assesment of sean. i wonder who is closer to the situation?

Frank is playing sean at center and he does as best he can. he is supposed to play eraser on this team, thats it, not be an offensive force but provide offensive options by blocking shots and rebounding or forcing turnovers.

I think i side with Lopez over netincome.

  37. Net Income Says:

    @SIC
Clearly he loves being a Net????

Last October, he asked the Nets not to exercise his option for this season.

Sean Williams is a phenomenal athlete and a great shot-blocker. He is nothing more than that.

  40. MoMo731 Says:

There is no way the Nets get a superstar. We should be looking at Lee or Gay. We’d even have to overpay them to get them to come here.

  41. robby Says:

Nobody mentions Yi as part of this great future. Strange.

  42. Dziedzic Says:

    MoMO731 Says:
D.Lee is a backup PF at best on a good team.
R.Gay is not what the team needs.
We have that position SF taking care of with J.Hayes and T.Williams.
We need a true starting PF and a true backup center.
Go Brooklyn Nets! Go Brooklyn Nets!

  43. MoMo731 Says:

    @dziedzic

Nets have been setting up this “2010 summer run” for far too long. We have a slim chance of a real stud player. As our team is now, we aren’t a good team. This team is pathetic, we need to improve during this offseason. Adding David lee improves the team tremendously. I am not sold on t-will, I see him as a super sub. There is nothing wrong with that. We cannot put the ball in the hoop, gay can be one of our core players who can put the ball in the hoop.
