Nets Can Only Hang With Magic for So Long

November 13, 2009, 9:30 pm

The worst start in franchise history got worse Friday night as the Nets fell 88-72 in Orlando. The Nets scored the first seven points of the game and led by 10 midway through the second quarter, but the Magic closed the half on a 16-6 run and the game was tied at the break. A 9-0 Orlando run late in the third gave them the lead for good and a 10-0 run early in the fourth put the Nets away. Brook Lopez was totally outmatched against Dwight Howard, shooting just 1-12 from the field, getting outscored 26-4 and outrebounded 12-5. Rafer Alston finished with his first career triple-double: 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Terrence Williams recorded another double-double, but the two combined to shoot 8-32 from the field. Chris Douglas Roberts played 18 minutes and said he “was tired as hell…I’ll be back in game shape by next week.” As a team, the Nets shot just 32 percent.

  1. Randy Oreens Says:

I dont see why when we get a lead we dont go with it? They just seem to let the other team come back like that…

Brook Lopez is not a dominate center, this year he has suprised me as people called him an all star. Brook was embrassing today and just seemed afraid of Dwight Howard.
Sean Williams SHOULD PLAY, he did great he took charges and also played good D.
TWILL takes way to many shots.
    Rafer keeps them game motion.
CDR seemed weak from the sickness.

Frank at half time just didnt seem to drive these guys to a victory we did well first half but again the worst 3rd quarter team in NBA we lost. We do good the first two quarters then BOOM!

Frank you need to step down you are driving this team into the cracks.

  2. Barry Popik Says:

Josh Boone played only five minutes? Why? Is he…..injured?

  3. Mohammad Says:

We really need all of our guys back. I’m surprised it’s taking Devin this long to come back.

  4. erte Says:

trade devin i like the guy but i dont see him making this team better besides hes to injury prone. Love the nets but somehow for the first time i hope they loose alot more.

we need a first overall draft pick and we need to stop being so patient and make moves to win NOW look how long we kept collins and signed players who only belong in elite teams

    anyone agree?? ?? ??

  5. T Says:

Brook was a disgrace. I feel like I want to trade him away from my fantasy team. He puts up awful lines too much, and its all because he takes forced shots and is not athletic enough to get a dang rebound.

He needs to train with Tim Grover.

  6. diehardNFFLbarnone Says:

FIRE FRANK NOW! FIRE FRANK NOW!

  7. Andrew Says:

It really is tough for Coach Frank to play with 9 guys. I think he is a good coach to be honest and maybe if we had all our guys we probably would’ve won a long time ago. But still, I like the fight that the Nets had tonight. We did good in the first half but we fell apart in the second half and we couldn’t hang with the Magic. Its not like they’re not playing hard it’s just that they need to learn how to close out games, but still it is tough with just 9 guys especially for the coach.

  8. mr. omG Says:

    Nets lose again? im shocked!!!

    0-9 like everyone expected.

We should follow New Orleans example you know!

Brook had a bad night, but if he would have posted at least 15 points Nets could have DREAMED on winning.

but not with 4 points and 5 rebounds.

Nice triple double from Alston, too bad he shooted porly, Twill had a nice Double double too but needs to overload his software (brain) on shooting programs

  9. biggie Says:

Won a long time ago? probably?
We did have a full roster for the first few games. We lost to the Wolves remember? Probably? Full roster or not, a win wasn’t easy to come by for this team.

  10. biggie Says:

    It’s gonna be 0-10.
We have no chance against the Heat, because they got a lot of capable young guys with energy. Our veterans will be catching their breath after the game.
You want a win, say a prayer when we play against the Bucks and the Knicks.

  11. Randy Oreens Says:

I dont understand why if a team is doing bad they change that and change the coach yet Thorn wants to lose. Frank is black mailing Thorn or something. New Orleans was 3-6 with Scott and we are 0-9 with Frank yet he is still a coach.
Imagine if we are 0-30 and Thorn still praises Frank.

  12. mikee21 Says:

DEVIN DEVIN DEVIN mi god people leave Devin alone he’ll return when he return!

  13. biggie Says:

Lol, if the Nets is in the stock market, all the share holders would be jumping off buildings right now. An owner who refuses to make any decisions in response to loosing. Classic!

  14. JustinNJ Says:

Great first half. Our lack of offense showed in the second half. We need more guys who can create shots and make jump shots. Many of them are injured. Devin, Courtney, Keyon and Jarvis. Great effort again, nonetheless. You knew with Vince and Dwight, that the Magic would put together a run. Tough night for Brook. Tonights effort shows he needs to improve his positioning to create rebounding opportunities. It just shows that Dwight has a four year advantage over Brook. He will get there though. I love watching a defensive minded team, like we have become. Congrats to Rafer Alston for his first career triple double. He is growing on me. I just want to see how we do when our other two point guards are healthy. Another fine game for Terrence. He should be on the floor for his rebounding and defense. He does need, however, to improve his all around offensive game to take that next step. I would be watching Vince Carter shhoting videos to help his form if I were him. Too bad we can’t combine the two players’ talents. What a player that would be! Lets go NETS!

  15. drmagoo Says:

fire frank but don’t stop there. fire thorn & kiki too.

  16. diehardNFFLbarnone Says:

@ drmagoo – oh pleaaaaase no!

  17. JohnY Says:

Frank is such a brilliant strategist. i overheard scouts whisper that any other coach would be 0-13 after 9 games with this team.

  18. Paul Erstein Says:

The gang that can’t shoot straight. TWILL didn’t spend enough time shooting in the gym this past off season. Brook looked lost. We need our better players back, and then we’ll need ten games with all of them in the lineup to mesh and then we will see what kind of team we have got. Do you think that at o-15 LFrank gets fired? Would we bring back Byron Scott? Or me?

  19. jarkid Says:

Lopez, be a man, you are really like a sissy girl against Dwight Howard.

  20. SmartNetsFan Says:

Frank isn’t being fired until any ownership change does or doesnt happen

for all the Brook haters – RELAX, jesus…he’s 21 years old, second year in the league going up against Dwight Howard…jesus people!

  21. Mike L Says:

The Nets have alot of injuries and have had a tough schedule….Firing Frank right now would not be right BUT regardless if the nets can’t win 2 out of 3 against IND, Mil & NY (I know asking for 2 wins is alot) winning 20 games will seem very unlikely.

IF WE CAN’T WIN GAMES AGAINST OTHER BAD TEAMS AND DO NOT FIRE FRANK LOSING SEEMS EXCEPTABLE…. I am so mad how this team is run that Frank’s job might be safe for the year! Ownership/management or whoever is running the Nets need to at least show Losing is not acceptable and changes need to happen (in the Nets case, as most, it starts with the Coach)

  22. HEAVYDUTYDJ Says:

Brook needs to get mad or punch somebody in the face he’s too nice.
Brook was all nicey nicey wit DHoward after the game.
    Shaq and Duncan never joked
    It was war
Brook might need a punch in the face
Frank should have ISOd brook early attch DH
We would be good if everyone was healthy
    Decent game though
    This team is tired!
CDR needs another week to get back into game shape
    GONETS
Brook betta watch out for DWADE!

  23. Boomdog Says:

    @ Mike

The bucks are far from bad…..but i agree we should be able to beat Ind. or the knicks in that 3 game stretch. (however, this current team just plays horribly against the knicks so who knows.)

  24. wontontony Says:

First of all, you cannot be serious if you think Brook is not something special. Sure he is not the athletic freak that Howard is. Can you name 2 centers that are? Brook is going to have to rely on savvy against Super Stars and that will only come with time. He will be a guy that 90% of teams will not have an equal to in the not too distant future. One problem for him now is that the Nets dont have shooters to dump the ball in to Lopez so the guards collapse on him. The other thing he needs to do is take the ball direct as soon as he touches it sometimes. He does the same thing too often and almost never shoots without a pumpfake or 2. If he just went str8 up he would have caught Howard flat once or twice then his fake would be more effective.

  25. mikee21 Says:

Wow aren’t y’all just some crazy fans… wasn’t it just last game everybody loved Brook Lopez one bad game and the bashing won’t stop I swear y’all a bunch of switch siders. Y’all do it to everybody that play well then have one bad game when is it really gonna stop???? Please stop children and grow up you can’t always have it your way.

  26. Dan the Fan Says:

    Boooo!!!

  27. rayray Says:

    @ SmartNets

I knew that was the answer.

@ Net Income or ANYONE ELSE

We have 8 healthy guys – several of whom are older, and CDR with the flu. They are just wearing out by the end of the game. So why didn’t Boone get more playing time?

  28. ben Says:

We should have won the first game against the twolves. That’s what makes this worse. We lose all our players but we are in every game. Can’t get mad at that

  29. Dan the Fan Says:

    @rayray
because our coach is being paid $4,000,000 to beef up stats on Alston and Simmons so they can be traded later this year and to secure a top 3 pick. And thanks to cluelesd LFrank’s coaching we aré doing just that.

  30. Mr. Dollar Bills Says:

Lawrence Frank needs to be fired

Josh Boone plays 5 mins in a game where we needed defense around the basket???

T-Will shot like crap but racks another double double

Frank and Simmons need to get the hell away from this team

  31. SmartNetsFan Says:

I guess you can’t be religulous on this blog

  32. NetsDaily Says:

You can’t be religulous anywhere. You can, however, be religious.

  33. NetRick Says:

Good, cause you all need to pray. They may not actually win a single game.

  34. Net Income Says:

The Nets are playing back to back games on the road with eight or nine players. And people wonder why Josh Boone is playing less minutes and Sean Williams is playing more…and blaming Frank?

He’s resting his players. Lopez has played 159 minutes this week. Alston and Hassell have played more. CDR says he will not be in game shape til next week.

  35. SmartNetsFan Says:

Thanks, NetsDaily for picking up the Bill Maher reference.

A job well done to you, Sir.

  36. Whoop dee damn doo Says:

    And the saga continues…

But what do you expect with 3/5 of our starting lineup out and one just got back from a case of swine flu?

I thought we would win 25-27 games this season…yikes!

  37. Sparklespice Says:

ya wow. What a nice bunch of fans who are already turning on Lopez. It’s his second year. Yao Ming struggled a little in his second year but did get better as the season progressed. Lopez played great in the last 3 games before this and now with a bad game against the best defensive center some fans are again saying how doubful they have become of him and how he is having a dissapointing season. jesus christ.

  38. Whoop dee damn doo Says:

And for those that are getting on Brook for looking like a WNBA player against Dwight Howard….well, uh…for a SECOND time…uh, it just shows he’s got work to do.

He hasn’t learned how to play a physical big men like Howard. It doesn’t mean he’s garbage. Howard makes all of C’s look like that except Shaq.

  39. Robby Says:

Nice game tonight by Sean Williams. Good defensive decisions and energy. On offense he worked hard to get good positions to set picks. He was not intimidated by Dwight and did a much better job on him that Brook did. He’s got some potential to be a strong backup somewhere. Most on this board will be glad to see him go.

  40. matt Says:

    TRADE LOPEZ

  41. NetFan48 Says:

Brook was a step or two behind Howard tonight….Yes , Brook needs to hit the weight room…..and Dwight is more experienced but it was so obvious that Howard was prepared for Brook’s game and Brook was lost…..The Nets had no game plan against Howard…What about Screen and Rolls or Pick and Rolls for Brook ??? Brook is a fine outside shooter…Why could he not bring Howard outside ??? Although it sure looks like Howard throws his body into alot of his blocks and does not get called……

  42. mina Says:

i love how some fans here think that once lee, harris, yi, hays, dooling, and battie comes back it will make some drastic difference to the team. IT WONT.

fisrt off, alston is a better pg than harris, but harris is the more talented player. harris had it easy last year cause vince was on the floor with him. he didnt need to be a pass rist pg cause vince could create for tohers. and vince always commanded attention leaving harris space to operate in. i think alston runs this team better.

lee was actually a liability on the floor. he was bricking every shot, and hes not that type of player that commmands attention or creates for anyone.

Yi played great but he isnt a game changer. and his defense is extremely suspect most of the times.

battie is basically done, and probably isnt injured. he just dioesnt wewant to add mileage on his old tires, and save them when he signs with a contender for the minimum (orlando).

dooling wouldnt be playing even if he was healthy. its obvious that alston is tons better than him, and that harris is also.

this team doenst have mental toghness. this has been going on for about 4yrs now. they always seem to crumble, or los it, or as kidd would say let go of the rope when the game is on the line. frank might be a good strategist, but the game is so much more than that. the team always takes on the personality of their coach. and this team is soft. frank doesnt seem able to light up a fire under his players butts. hhisd players dont seem like theyll run through a brick wall for him.

i really do thuink that thron was ready to fire him last offseason, but frank’s salary was too large to overlook. i think a decision has been made already, frank will not coach the team next year for sure, and if the loosing goes on, it will happen sooner than later. teams like the kings, rockets, the bucks, the wolves, all show more fight and spirit thean the nets. the nets just dont have an idnetity. they dont have a style of play to fall on. what type of team are they?

i think this team SOME good defense now for onw reason, TRENTON HASSEL. this guy is a pitbull, and i admire his play. his giving the nets some attitide.

im sick and tired of heatring the nets dont have horses. at least show some fight, effort, spirit, a style of play, an idnetity. show some direction, some leadership.

its awesome how some people give frank all the credit in the world when the entsstill lose but arwe in games, but gets no blklame when the nets play bad. again look at the rockets and bucks, case closed. the nets need a new man on the helm. can anybody say scott. he wont be coming back on his own terms.

and i read a couple of days net income write that frank would get a job much faster than scott, are you smocking something. what has frank done, but under achieve, and show nothing but at bets mediocre coaching. scott will hand pick his next job. frank will be lucky to have a head coaching job. all those GM’s have to do is look at both coach;s resume. scott, two finals appearence, resurected two franchises, the nets and hornets, and COY honors once and got robed at least one more time. frank, secound ro8ound playiffs, with a team that scott coached, and same thinkg with two superstars in their prime in vc and kidd, and a 20 point scorer in rj all at the same time. im sure all three players feel blessed that he aint coaching them no more.

  43. Andrew Says:

Why do people not realise that the management doesn’t care if we lose or not? The whole point of this season is to give our youth more experience, see how Yi does, and get as close to the number one draft pick as possible – if Frank helps us do this, then definitely keep him and drop him in the off-season, once we have a better squad. Besides, our team is so lacking, Frank has done a decent job with them. At least we’re playing good defence, hustling hard and actually hanging on in games with the likes of the Magic and the Celtics etc

  44. djheavyduty Says:

BTW Brook Lopez is not a PF
    VC is smokin crack
    Brook is a center
Brook needs a mean streak to reach his potential
he has to attack and not be intimidated by refs or players

  45. jerry25 Says:

Andrew is pretty much right, at this point, about management.

Even the players aren’t upset after losing, anymore, because they are getting lots of playing time. Alston had a triple double which NBA-TV made a big deal about. His trade value will go up.

Actually, management is desperately waiting on the Appeals Court decision which could come as early as Tuesday.

The only thing to add is that if Proky/Brooklyn do go through, there would be the chance to make some key trades later on – have a very good finish to the year, and STILL have nearly the same odds of a TOP Draft pick.

The Draft picks are designed to not reward tanking.
The worst team has more of a chance of getting the #4 pick as getting the #1 pick! However, the worst team can do no worse than #4.

  46. OPutney Says:

Need to lay off Brook. He is a second year guy with HUGE upside, no talent around him and a clueless coach. It’s not a game by game look. Over the long run he’s going to be a monster.

I can’t understand how with a depleted roster and what he’s shown that Boone got so few minutes. Oh, that’s right, our coach is an idiot.

  47. halwas Says:

Pretty much went as expected – although Lopez had a horrible game. Its just ugly and its not getting better. I don’t think getting back Harris, Lee or Yi will make any difference. They make eke out a couple of wins against the very worst teams – but that’s it.

I hope this Russian guy is willing to spend lots of money – because the Nets are going to need it. I hope they wind up in Newark, tell LeBron James to get lost, and build a team from the ground up with young talent.

  48. JuliusIrving Says:

Who wants to keep this list updated? We might be needing a new database if everybody joins.

    Randy Oreens Says:
Frank you need to step down you are driving this team into the cracks.

    SmartNetsFan Says:
Frank isn’t being fired until any ownership change does or doesnt happen

  49. netsball Says:

    TWill

0 blocks this season and is averaging .4 steals a game in over 30 minutes of play.
let’s give him some more time before we start saying he’s a better defender then Courtney Lee.

His FG percentage might not even get that much better this season.
And when is the last time he dunked in a game?
the kid’s missing jumpers, dunks, free throws…he’ll get better i think, but his stat line of 10 ppg is deceitful.
the kid’s gotta stop taking jumpers at one point and just try to pass the ball like he is supposedly capable of or just start playing better without the ball.

cause right now from his shooting percentage he can’t really create a good job for himself. right now, every shot he takes seems like its gonnna be a miss.

  50. Will J Says:

trade lopez! trade twill! trade everyone! i mean what did anyone expect? hes dwight howard, he embarrasses everybody. not the worst game in the world. would have liked to see a ryan anderson sighting. maybe lee will get to play in orlando when we draw them in the playoffs..

  51. HoldenCaulfield718 Says:

The only reason Frank is still coach is becoming ownership doesnt want to pay 2 coaches..end of story!!

  52. J Tallent Says:

there’s no reason to be down on Lopez.

Dwight Howard: Believe The Hype. He is the trump card.

Howard is supposed to dominate. In two/three years Lopez will be dominating Howard. I love the fire and will of Lopez. That won’t go away. And his body and skills will only get better. He’s gonna be a huge beast.
