“Big Baby” Still an Option?

August 1, 2009, 7:29 am

Chad Ford reports in his latest free agent wrap up that only the Celtics and Nets have real interest in Glen “Big Baby” Davis, that most teams are afraid of tieing up money on an offer sheet Boston could match. While the Celts are reportedly prepared to match anything up to $5.3 million, they’re already over the luxury tax. Also, with Boston signing Rasheed Wallace, “Davis might be expendable”, writes Ford.

Forget him, he’s not worth all that money.

  2. Larry Brown Says:

I’d love the Nets to get Big Baby somehow.

  3. Andrés Says:

I dont think the Nets would spend that money, anyway.

  4. Net Income Says:

The Celts still trying to find a third team to help them give Marquis Daniels more than the $2 million LLE. Celts also need to reduce not take on more luxury tax. Signing Big Baby at $5 million is the equivalent of signing him for $10 million…and they still owe their Big Three a total of $99 million over the course of their contracts.

  5. Chris2 Says:

The fact that only us and the Celtics are still interested in Davis, to me, is all the more reason NOT to extend him a big offer. Provided we do not send him an offer sheet, he will likely sign his one year qualifying offer with the Celtics. He will then see a reduced role next year, playing behind both KG and Rasheed Wallace. We would likely be able to sign him outright next summer at a lesser salary, if thats the route we choose to go. We would still retain maximum salary cap flexibility to go after a bigger fish before Davis though. Davis would become the fall back option. Looking at the upcoming season, it will be a year of rebuilding. We will likely not make the playoffs with or without Davis. So we can afford to wait a year on this. Again though, if you can sign him to a moderate deal, something like 3 million per year over 2 or 3 years, I’m all for it. I just don’t think that would get it done.

  6. Matt Says:

I agree with hris. But at the same time if we could somehow get rid of simmons or swat, I would def. not mind getting big baby, although it most likely won’t happen.

  7. Matt Says:

I agree with chris. But at the same time if we could somehow get rid of simmons or swat, I would def. not mind getting big baby, although it most likely won’t happen.

“if you can sign him to a moderate deal, something like 3 million per year over 2 or 3 years, I’m all for it. I just don’t think that would get it done.”
    Agreed.

  9. Net Income Says:

“Glen Davis has been interesting to me, because I thought he was a guy that people would jump on pretty quickly at least to an offer sheet and see what happens. It hasn’t materialized that way, but we saw him up close for seven straight games, and he’s an outstanding player.”

  10. Mr. Check it out Says:

This matter of Davis is not funny anymore, why are we still talking about him. The Nets wont get him. Closed matter…

If this news are still around its because the Nets have runned out of news and are reliying on lies to make us come to netsdaiy and post senseless comments like this one.

    XD

  11. Andy Says:

exactly chris…3 mil per year is perfect. Celtics have to look at reality, no one is going to pay him 5 million per year. He isnt worth that much. WHy would the celtics pay him 5 million to only have him on the bench? KG, Rasheed, Scalabrine, Powe…yeah u get the picture. Nets and other teams are smart not offering him a offer sheet…celtics just want to get as much in return for him.

  12. tu vieja Says:

just move on. he’s not worth that much money n he not even dat nice.

  13. Andy Says:

he would be a nice addition though in the right deal

  14. jarkid Says:

the nets won’t sign anybody this summer, book it.

  15. Dirt Says:

Big Baby & Muscle Devil: The yin and yang of power forwards.

  16. jarkid Says:

lol… Dirt you mean negative and positive.

  17. TheMann Says:

The Nets need to just stop even talking about Big Baby, he’s def not worth more than 3-3.5million and honestly probably less than 3. There was a reason Leon Powe was ahead of him on the depth chart. Davis had a good couple of shots in the playoffs and now people are wayyyyy overvaluing him. It happens with players from any championship/contending team. Luckily for us it seems like the Nets wont spend more than 300,000 on any player so hopefully we dont sign him.

  18. Andy Says:

yeah no way were getting him…just to get nets fans a little excited…

  19. Mr. Dollar Bills Says:

I don’t pay anymore than 3 million per

I think this is just a bunch of smoke being blown by the Nets front office…I don’t see the Nets doing anything. they need to though for the development of the kids. Simmons and Hassel need to be gone, but I have a feeling the Nets will just let their contracts expire.

  20. Kevin Says:

I think the nets have “interest” in terms of, yeah thats a nice player to have. But have no interest or intent on really trying to get him.

  21. Mike Says:

Why are the Nets apparently the only team interested in this “great” addition? Should tell you something. Even the Celtics want to low ball him.

  22. Dirt Says:

@ Mike…Who else has money at this point and/or pieces they’re willing to give up? The best teams trying to make a run at a championship are out of money and roster spots and the worst teams in the league are set with their PF rotation.

Thunder? DJ White, Serge Ibaka, Jeff Green.
Bucks? They just signed Warrick and got Amir Johnson and Kurt Thomas in trades.
Grizzlies have Randolph, Darrell Arthur and drafted Demarre Carroll.
Knicks are going to spend all their money on Lee, and have Harrington, and just drafted Jordan Hill.
    T-Wolves, Kevin Love, Harrington,
Indiana: Hansbrough, and a bevvy over other big hustley white guys.

  23. xcalibur Says:

im like everyone else pretty much. i love davis and would love to have him, but at a certain price. obviously we have a full roster so a move needs to be made, but i dont want to overspend for him when there really is no market for him outside of our rumored interest and the C’s wanting to keep him at a very cheap price.

id love to have him as one of our PF for the next couple of years where i think we can really build a solid young core and he fits in perfectly. bulky guy down low who can use his size and will only find ways to use it better. yeah the C’s made him look good, but the kid is good himself. his J improved as well.

  24. tu vieja Says:

y would we get rid of our players who’s contracts are going to expire at the end of this season?? we need to keep them just to have money 4nxt year. comon think about it. with or without picking up an allstar nxt summer we are still going to need the money eventually wen all of our young players rookie contracts expire. we are going to have a great team in the future with or without an allstar player like lbj, wade stat or cb4. like in a possible 3or4 yrs we are going on a rampage with all the talent we have.

  25. Mike Says:

Davis for a so called power forward does not rebound well. Why do we need a big body (He isn’t that tall just fat) who doesn’t rebound or block shots? The Nets would be fools to lock up this bench player for 3 years 12-15 Million. If all the good things have been taken that does not mean you settle for 2nd best. What’s the hurry anyway.

  26. TheMann Says:

If he was really that good, teams would be moving pieces to get him. Hopefully the Nets stick with their game plan and keep the PR machine rolling and are not seriously interested in him.

  27. jerry25 Says:

Guys, you have to remember the Rod Thorn strategy is Sign & Trade, Sign & Trade. They will only take on a new player if they can get rid of one in the process.

BBD and Boozer are the two PF that could be obtained this way. I don’t think Thorn ever intended to offer close to 6 million for BBD. However, Boston should fear that another team might, and thus Boston would get nothing for BBD. Thorn is hoping that Boston will “cave” and accept someone other than Yi for BBD. It may have to involve 3 teams.

Thorn admitted he is looking for a bargain. He may strike out in the process.

And YES, I would take Big Baby, as he would be perfect to complement Yi. As a “wide body”, he alters the other team’s offense. On offense he has similar ability to “finish” that Charles Barkley had.

I doubt if Nets would take Boozer now, unless they didn’t have to give up much. Now that Management is more confident about Yi (remains to be seen), they wouldn’t want to take Yi’s playing time away with Boozer.
